  • 9th-dan in Ryuei-ryu karate Tsuguo Sakumoto is 7 times consecutive world champion and coach to 9 world champions including Tokyo Olympic Gold medalist in kata Ryo Kiyuna.
In this 7th episode in the series, Tsuguo Sakumoto Sensei talks about his studying the once secret style of karate Ryuei-ryu, training world champions, and thinking about the role of karate in the future.
Sensei: Masters of Okinawan Karate is a documentary series about the amazing martial arts teachers living on Okinawa, the birthplace of karate. It is completely free to watch on TH-cam, anywhere in the world! Series One has more than 1,000,000 views.
Visit the blog to learn how you can support Series Two. Coming in 2022!
    travel67.com/the-karate-maste...
    GOALS OF THE SERIES
    1. Document the stories of Okinawan karate masters and their philosophy on life and their martial arts practice.
    2. Record in the highest quality possible. Ideally 4K or 8K, RAW, multi camera, multi audio
    3. Store the original data as an archival record.
    4. Transcribe and translate the recordings to spread knowledge of Okinawan martial arts, history and culture.
    5. Make the videos available for free online via TH-cam and Bujin.tv so that anyone, anywhere can see them.
The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community.
The international karate community generously supported the first series.

I met him in 2015 for a seminar in Okinawa.
Funny moment, he had a little problem with my name's pronunciation, so one he said "too difficult, I call you Hiroshi!", 😆😆😆 .
Great man first. Then great sensei.

Thank you very much this is really what i like of karate people considered masters are very humble mostly or if not all of them has the virtue of humility that sometimes i could say better than some of the priest.

13:57 Bunkai is "Analysis" of the Kata, where as "Oyo" is the application. Master is correct, but the translation is not. Excellent documentary otherwise, many thanks!

double punch same hand is Hsing-i with ground foot stamp to increase punch power of 2nd punch. like clenching your opposite hand into a fist simultaneously while grabbing or gripping with the other hand increases grip strength in the grabbing hand. diagonal stepping is Hsing-i. simultaneous punch-kick-block and rapid two-hand double punch is in shorin-ryu taught by Fusei Kise at one time. not unique to ryuei.

Yes I'd love to have got more footage of him training and performing kata, but with a limited amount of time and access you get what you can. There is footage of Sakumoto sensei, but very few interviews translated into English so hopefully some people will find it of use.
