The most beautiful version of the USS Enterprise in all of Star Trek.
I like the D, and I like the E despite her obvious design flaws..., but this is *the* most beautiful sequence of the Enterprise ever put to film

Most beautiful spaceship in cinematic or TV history. Don't keep it just to star trek. And no cgi since holds a candle to the realism of a meticulously constructed model.

Always found it mind boggling that people say this scene is too long. It’s not long enough!
It is long time for a ship to leave, it was unacceptable to have it so long, no wonder TMP was not a fan favorite

The most beautiful starship in history
You don’t know what it was like seeing this in the big screen at the Ziegfeld Theatre in 1979. It was proceeded for months with beautiful four page and two page ads in the Sunday New York Times. You had to have been watching Star Trek on the really small screen for decades to appreciate how magnificent this scene truly was to see.
Saw it for the first time on the giant screen on the stage of Rudder Auditorium at Texas A&M. The place was almost sold out, including the mezzanine which hardly ever had anyone in it at the time.

the great thing about this scene is that the Enterprise looks like the ship it it is - big ... and in wonderful detail. And that folks, is because they used a highly detailed model. That is why we can have the close-up shots. Now, compare this with "Discovery" and "Picard", both of which have cheap and nasty low ress cgi. There is no comparison.
Also, you cant beat the way the Enterprise looks when she leaves spacedock; she's gorgeous
My aunt took me to see this.My favorite scene is seeing her pass through the Juptian system.And given just how far away it is.And she had not gone in to warp yet.Best refit ever and a real eye pleaser.

Wife and I were stationed in Hawaii when this first came out. Coincidentally we had just spent the afternoon aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) at "Hotel Pier" Pearl Harbor. Thanks to the forced perspective given by the special effects photography, the movie Starship Enterprise appeared every bit as big and majestic as the real-life ship.

I had just turned 9 when this movie came out. I remember the joy I felt seeing the new Enterprise in the orbital yard and when she`s sailing over the earth with the sun coming up behind. I`m 53 now and I still feel the same. She`s the perfect fusion of art and technology.

This ST:TMP has to have been one of Gerry Goldsmiths best soundtracks. This sequence illustrates how a an excellent soundtrack can enhance what is being watched.
Never get tired of the shots of the Enterprise flying by Jupiter. As a kid Jupiter was my favorite planet so I was always jazzed by it.

The Constitution refit is gorgeous.
The ship not moving until the thrusters overcame the inertia of it standing still, the somersaulting dock worker giving her a send off, all the little touches

Can't believe it's 45 years old. The years just blur together. One minute your back in 1979, young and healthy. Now 45 you realize how old you are.
For all it's faults, this movie gave us one of the best glamor sequences for the Enterprise of all time AND the iconic Klingon music. It's alright in my book.

Oh, to be back in 1979 when I saw this in the theatre for the first time. I still get the same emotion watching this scene now as I did back then.

The audience in 1979 at the theater I was literally gasped and applauded during this scene.
I'm not surprised. This holds up today (except little backflipping astroboy). It's gorgeous.

JJ Abrams didn't treat the ship as a character, he saw it as an object.
The first iteration could've been worse, but also better. If positioning of the neck and Pylon angles were adjusted, then the ship would've been fine. The versions after it were bad

I got to see this movie as a kid. The audience went absolutely nuts during the scene.
I love the visual poetry this movie gave us. Watching the Enterprise leave dry dock is an emotional experience. The ship, itself, is a character in the story. Beautiful!
The departure angle scene at 2:56 has always deeply moved me since I was a kid.

It’s one of the best little touches in any movie. Exactly how one might expect a worker to react to the awesome sight and imagining he has been hard at work on it for months.
Great little detail from Shatner at around :56, agitatedly brushing his fingers against the arm of the captain's chair like little running feet. Kirk is just *itching* to go, go, go.
That little sequence helped make the movie so believable. In real life, to say, fly an airplane or operate a sea going ship, we would need to do checklists, make sure systems are function, turn our marker lights on and get permission to depart. Enterprise 1701-A here, felt like piece of mechanical engineering that required procedures and processes to operate.
*Kurtzman and Abrams turned it into the Jetsons.*

There is a debate about whether this is really the same ship as the one on TOS since it's been completely rebuilt.

After Pearl Harbor, 6 of the 8 battleships sunk or damaged there reentered service. One of these was the USS Tenessee. Though she underwent an extensive rebuild. So much so that aside from her turrets she is barely recognizable post rebuild. Her hull was widened, her secondary guns were switched fom casement type to twin barreled turrets and her superstructure was completely rebuilt. This is interesting as she was one of the least damaged battleships that day ( sitting inside of the West Virgina, she took no torpedos, just several bomb hits and some of her stern plates reportedly melted slightly when the Arizona blew astern of her ).
Also, if you look at the museum aircraft Carriers we have left over from WW2, youll see they originally had rectangular flight decks, and tons of AA guns of various sizes. Now all those AA guns have been removed due to post War refits and the carriers all have angled flight decks like new carriers do.
The TOS Enterprise and the refit Enterprise is still the same ship, despite her refit and subsequent alterations to her appearence. Just as the pre Pearl Harbor battleships are the same ships as the post Pearl Harbor battleships. And as are the WW2 aircraft carriers.
At half the speed of light the Enterprise was passing Jupiter !

Yes, a bit aged, but these visuals are stellar for 1979! They did a lot without modern tools.

I like the departure scene where the impulse engines come on at 2:46. Very detailed while retaining the TOS feel.

It is a sad day the realisation that I will be dead before humanity puts aside its petty differences and becomes the hope of what Star Trek originally promised, and theorized for humanity.
Same here. I realized it back in the 1990s - I would never live long enough to see colonies on the moon and Mars. I'm 72, now, it I find it terribly sad that this present generation cares more about what is between their legs then what awaits mankind in interstellar space. How, terribly disappointing! Maybe someday, a generation will be born that will look up and realize the stars await us and it is time to grow up and leave our safe little planetary nest.
@@kathleenhensley5951 As a member of the present generation, I am frankly appalled at how most of my generation acts. They think of life as nothing, they don't care what job they get, all they want is to stay teens forever and never establish proper inter-personal relationships.
I only discovered Star Trek recently, but it truly feels like a breath of fresh air compared to what gets put on the big screens these days. It's clearly a product of a better time, when there weren't regulations on everything to prevent small handfuls of people from getting offended. This is what humanity should strive for: Unity and progress, while also remembering the importance of the past.

What is really sad is the addictive behaviors like video games, drugs, gambling, politics, smart phones, social media, etc. I grew up near the end of the Cold War and remembered us being concerned about the Soviets, but it didn’t seem as much of a war like atmosphere as it does now. I think the last 20 years has conditioned us to accept war as a given, which is really sad, and plays well for a certain party.
Quite right. Those genuine and specific ideals are those of (America) and) western civilization, I guess. How could they miss, being the best and brightest, before and since? Consider this: the whole Earth is entirely ready for a USA-type federation government of governments where, just copying, (abstraction and interpolation) 90% or so of USA that are the best and core features and design of America becomes, overnight, peacefully, with everybody's permission AND because all the other alternatives are so terribly bad and plain wrong, the United States of Earth or USE. Humanity could use just such a breakthrough in civilization, imho.

Jerry Goldsmith's score is still the best ST music. I heard this was the second version he submitted - the producers thought the first one was "too nautical." Hard to believe, since this one is probably the most nautical piece of music I've ever heard. The full symphony version is just stunning. You can almost hear the spray flying, the big ocean waves rolling beneath your feet.

Smaller budget, so they resused some effects shots, models, etc. Every effects shot in TWOK, until after the first warp jump was reused.

Without Jerry Goldsmith's music this movie and franchise would have died an undeserved death.
I'll always associate Goldsmith's theme with NextGen.

I love James Horner's scores from Khan on, but Jerry Goldsmith wrote a masterpiece of a score here.
I remember seeing this in a theater as a kid. Seeing the Refit Enterprise leave Spacedock is no less thrilling all of these decades later..

Saw it originally in 79 plus in the 5 film marathon viewing.
This movie is ahead of its time. I got to see this in theatres for the rerelease and I was in awe. They don't make them like this anymore. Today fans would think these scenes are boring but the visuals combined with the soundtrack makes it a masterpiece. One of the first Star Trek movies I ever seen when I was younger on VHS but I loved it. "thrusters ahead, Mr. Sulu...take us out!"
I love the top down shot of Kirk with the navigation? display in view, as they power away from Earth under impulse.
Love the quadrant display diming quarter by quarter at the end...something that was removed in later edits with character reactions
Simply majestic!...I remember the first time I watched it wasn't in the theatre but on the ABC Movie of the Week!
At warp 0.5 it would take 90 minutes to get to Jupiter from Earth. In the movie, just after this scene cuts, they show them approaching Saturn. That wold take 3 hours at that speed. In three hours the movie would be over and everyone would have driven home.
At warp 1.0 it would take three years to get to the Ort cloud. (Which extends 3/4 of the way to Proxima Centauri.)
To get that far and "leave the solar system" within five minutes would require them to travel over 300,000 times the speed of light. That wold be about warp 19 in the original series warp scale.
It's not as bad as in the other Star Trek films when they leave Spacedock at 1/4 impulse haha, I think that's like 1/16th the Speed of Light, but still thats so insanely fast a speed for them to maneuvre out of drydock lol they'd come out like a bullet
If anyone who is involved with railroads that likes Star Trek. If you notice that the helm and Mr sulu is operating the Enterprise by a throttle. Just like on a diesel locomotive

After watching and enjoying the original 60’s series with its basic animation I was absolutely blown away when I first saw this motion picture version.
That would be something like 28 million miles per hour per inch that Sulu moved that handle! Hope he is careful!
I remember this scene. Also remember seeing the trailer for the 2009 star trek for the first time, with the Enterprise under construction in spacedock.

Beautiful theme. Beautiful ship. Which is, I know, a massive understatement, and that will never change.
Not to try to change it, but just today a thing occurred to me as I was listening to the Heavy Metal soundtrack, in which I noticed that the pacing of the drydock departure scene seemed to sync with the opening verse and first chorus of "Take a Ride (Heavy Metal)" by Don Felder. Not note for note, clearly, but you get the idea. It feels almost the same, like you're riding along with the song or with the ship. A Constitution-class could stand in rather handily for that clean Corvette in Felder's song.
Rup Douglas Trumbull your effects will live forever, you didn't need a computer to make the enterprise look this good
The bridge set for this film ended up being one of the most used throughout the franchise. It of course continued to be used as the Enterprise bridge in subsequent films, but also the bridge of the following:
- All Excelsior class ships.
- The USS Stargazer.
- The Enterprise C.
- The Enterprise D drive section.
- Most alien-of-the-week ships in TNG.
And many, many more I'm probably forgetting. Funny thing, the fact that it got used for so much is part of why the Enterprise D only separated three times in all 7 seasons of TNG.
Love this as ship. When we see Enterprise for the first time, I was in awe. And the look on Kirk's face, is of so much love it's a bit scary.
I saw this in theaters and thats how we should see her. Because the ship is very large. Like the scene where the crew exit on the top of the primary hull. Shows how big the ship is.
I know engineers, they just love to change things... 😊

I think that this is THE most beautiful ship in sci-fi. To me the second most beautiful ship is the Whitestars from Babylon 5. The ship (I can't call her The Enterprise) in the recent movies is just hideous.

Best music and warp drive effects of any Trek movie
Love the departure angle on viewer. You can see 1/1 impulse or Warp .5 is half the speed of light and not like in part 3 where 1/4 impulse power looked like maneuvering thrusters.
Its crazy how TMP, which usually isn't considered that good, has the best depiction of this that I've ever seen in Star Trek.
