    The young players who win junior slams and over train, over play, refuse to stop, beginning age 17 in pro tennis - their bodies are still developing until they are 24. An obvious example is Nick Kyrgios who won four junior slams (three in doubles) and was pushed into pro tennis after his Wimbledon win over Rafa aged 18. There follows a litany of injuries - knee, hip, wrist, ankle, spine...which recurred every few months. And the Aussie media jumped on him any time he tried to rest or rehab - told the world he was faking injury, being a sissy, pulling out because he thought he couldn't win, not training enough. So he kept playing through the pain. the result was a disaster of pain, stress, anger and despair. Now look at the younger players who are at least allowed to stop and rest. Afforded the luxury of media sympathy. Lucky them.

      I think his mental deteriorating because of the pressure he had at a young age is also a reason. He drank like crazy, drugs, etc. It aged his body faster thus more injuries. Which is sad.

    My daughter played junior tennis and went on to play collegiate tennis. She attended a training session with jose higueras , tom gullickson and martin black. The 3 of them stressed the importance of playing other sports. My daughter did and played high school basketball for 2 years. Loved it. It didnt mess up her tennis. Helped her shoulder recover from tendinitis.

    The one thing that makes me think that a lot of these coaches are just interested in the cash is I see so many young professionals or college players that have ridiculous mechanics with their forehand or their serve and I’m like how could coach not have fixed that by now, it doesn’t make any sense. I don’t see how somebody can be playing with coaches for 789 years and then end up with some weird looking backhand forehand unless the coach isn’t willing to make them correct it

    I’m a teaching pro working exclusively with tournament juniors ages 9-17. I’m seeing too many young players who only play tennis. As a result kids are getting injured more and they aren’t developing overall athleticism. When parents ask what they can do to help their kids improve I always respond with “have them play other sports”.

      Interesting question couldn’t you accomplish the same thing with cross training in their physical training regiment?? Like train them, and sprints, weight training perhaps jumping exercises that you would use for basketball

      I do sprint work, jumping, throwing and some other things with them but the bottom line is playing other sports uses different muscle groups and helps develop overall athleticism. A better athlete is going to make for a better tennis player and a more balanced body hopefully less injury prone.

    Long points pale in comparison to the overuse and incredible training these young athletes do on a daily basis. The dedication to be the best and the wear and tear on the body is a tough balancing act

    It doesn’t really make sense to me for the younger players or even the pro players I mean they’re all working with physical therapist, trainers and physio now so technically they should be getting less injuries not more

    Unfortunately little league sports has become an arms race among the parents. It's no longer good enough to be a naturally gifted and disciplined youth athlete. As a parent who wants their child to reach their potential, you now have to leverage finances and time to various extracurricular "training." All parents are "escalating" the amount of training to absurd degrees such that one has only two options: escalate things yourself or fall hopelessly behind.

    I love your podcast Andy. Growing up in the 80s playing tennis, versus now is psycho. Most parents who were competitive as youth are typically obsessed with their kid's ability in things. You mentioned every sport now has private coaches. I have friends now whose kids are in practically every sport at high levels and they traveling around the country collecting their Hilton points. That said, in soccer, which my kids are in now, the bigger clubs simply do not focus on youth development, but rather their system. This puts pressure on the parents so the ones who can afford it put their kids in private trainings so their kid's have a chance to become elite. Leave it up to the US to turn one of the most beautiful team sports, Soccer, and rip it to shreds with its overly complex, ever-changing leagues (money grabs) and pay to play system. My kids only play tennis for fun. I am sure the system is just as bad. Let me know.

    The points in modern game are too long, so injuries from overuse are no surprise. The balls and courts need to get faster, like they were 15-20 years ago. Combined with opportunities of modern medicine it will help players stay healthier

      A little faster would be nice, but please don't bring back Sampras vs Rafter serve-fests.

      @@alexgrover7693 nowadays players are more agile and modern strings technology allows to make much more returns in play. So now fast courts would actually be very appropriate to make points entertaining and provide equal chances for different types of players, including serve and volleyers

    Poly at young age

      Or just Poly?

    • @JulienGaudfroy
      @JulienGaudfroy หลายเดือนก่อน

      @matthewstubbs8343 poly is not bad in itself. Tons of players play only poly and have no arm issues. Too high tension and bad technique are the main problem. Along with unfitted racket, too heavy or too light, wrong grip size etc. Poly is not a problem.

    • @goggleboy2464

      @@JulienGaudfroyover time it becomes a problem. It happens gradually. It's such crap string

    • @JulienGaudfroy
      @JulienGaudfroy หลายเดือนก่อน

      @goggleboy2464 no. Tension is the problem, very low tension poly does not hurt the arm more than high tension gut. Arm problems do not come from poly itself only. It is a combination of things. Sports are sports, I could also say defense is such a crappy thing in football and basketball because it gives many injuries. The poly string factor is one of the smallest in the list of the reasons for chronic injuries in tennis. Irrelevant problem.
