I coach travel soccer, and from my experience, most of the problems in youth sports come from the parents. The game day experience is a sad spectacle…rows of overweight moms and dads sitting on chairs and screaming nonsense at their kids, completely oblivious to any sense of decorum. The kids are stressed and often miserable if we lose.
Recently, I’ve started having an entire practice session during the week consisting of nothing but small sided games…no drills, no work on set pieces…with the players encouraged to express themselves and be creative with the ball. It’s basically street soccer.
It’s now becoming the highlight of the week…because it’s the most fun!

I wish people didn't generalize their opinions with 'most' when they don't know. All you know is what you've seen. Leave it at that.

@Mike Young "most" is accurate, because it's almost always the same story. Parent was a failure who didn't get to chase their dream, so they force the dream onto their kids.

I was a multi sport player and all in with every sport I played. When I was 39 hip pain set in and I suffered until I was 49 until I had my first hip replacement....long story short I am 52 now with 2 hip replacements and 1 knee replacement and currently waiting for my 2nd knee replacement....moderate to severe cervical and lumbar arthritis....I have 4 kids and have never let them play sports the way I did....my son plays soccer and my daughter is on her high school crew team and the other 2 kids were just never interested in sports which was fine by me....bottom line is when your body hurts stop and rest it for however long you need to....sports eventually end and you have to have your body for many years after.

If only more parents would listen to you on this! As a coach I had to force kids to stop and rest for a few days, even when parents were swearing up and down their kid was fine, when their kid was clearly not fine. I'd love to hear more about your story.

The problem nowadays is that if you ask your kid what they want to do they’re most likely mostly gonna wanna eat snacks all day and play video games. Kids are just lazy nowadays and need that push from responsible parents. Sports was the best thing I could have done growing up and I’m glad my parents pushed me to do them

One of the main problems I see is having the students practice the same moves at least 6 days a week- working the same muscles. There's no rest time given for the muscles.

I get an odd feeling reading the comments since I wanted to take part in sports but couldn't due to growing up in rural kansas witih 2 parents who both worked 2 jobs. It just wasn't possible and if you don't get involved early on it just makes it that much harder later on to do so. Sure, many parents push their kids into sports as they do for many endeavors otherwise kids grow up without direction or motivation. I'm an example of this because everything was always left up to me what to do with no guidance either for or against. I've drifted through life ever since. so sure, parents can go too far but they can also do too little and i'm guessing that many parents do what's best for their kids. In society we tend to focus on the worst cases or the best cases while forgetting that the large majority aren't heard from nor does anyone care to know how their kids turned out. We just like the extremes as they make for good drama and lots of head shaking.

I can definitely confirm that theres a high risk of injuries in youth sports and I was one of the lucky ones. I had to quit because I got to a point where i couldnt do day to day tasks. And the worst part is coaches mock you for quitting

When my daughter was 5 we put her in softball to be able to play with more friends.

Let me tell you that has nothing to do with taking your child out to a field or participating in a game or accepting a cost scholarship so your child could try to get in school because school is so expensive which is a con game to trick you in to get your child and it risks Your child dying in a certain percentage cause you hope they make it through without any injuries nonsense it is what it is when you put your child in sport you sacrifice in your child ability to live a long life the percentage goes up we're supposed to make that percentage go down for our children to live a healthy life not raised that percentage to go up

The problem is recovery time. Everyone needs recovery time. A lot of couches out there want their players to train everyday 5 days a week. That not the way to do it. You have to give the athletes recovery time. If you work 7 days a week anyone will start to breakdown. That’s when the parents come in and tell these couches to go kick rocks. Also, risks are part of life but it must be managed. Telling people that competing is a problem is a double edge sword.
