It’s always good to have a rooster among the flock, especially if you free range the hens. He looks after them and keeps everyone in line.

I wasn’t so sure about one. I remember them attacking my grandma. I’m glad we got him though he 100 percent watches over them now.

Lol he just strolled on in there like he's always been part of their flock. I just introduced a silkie cockerel to a flock of older much larger hens and he's mortified of them. They roost alright, no fighting in the coop is far as I know, but they'll forage in opposite corners of the yard all day when the hens aren't chasing him around. At night I have to pick him up out of the compost pile and put him in the coop. He is the sweetest chicken I have ever met though, more pet than a rooster. Cuddles and sleeps in your lap, runs out to greet us, doesn't even run away from the kids when they pick him up. Cockerels are funny creatures, their personalities are all over the place.

I had a rooster that I named Fearless because he was willing to fight my German Shephard. Three days ago a predator in the forest killed fearless as he defending his girls. What a GERAT rooster he was! Now my daughter is giving me Fearless's brother. But I want to make sure I do the intro into the flock correctly. Thanks for this video!

You know what i did out of ignorance but it worked i brought the rooster threw him immediately with the hens they wanted to fight him so he fought back so when they understood that he was the alfa he started crowing they all kept quiet like ok he is the boss and end of the discussion they lived happily ever after it was the most efficient way for me and as i said i did it out of ignorance i was new to all this chickens experience.

Hi. This is the best rooster introduction process Ive seen so far. Congrats!
    Two questions:
How long should step 2 last?
What whould you have done if the result of the whole process had been different?

Just added one and he is about a year old and the hen's are only two months, so he was overly dominating! Therefore I am going to try your step to bring him into the flock with the other 16, thanks!

I needed this video! We’ve had our hens for about 8 months now and we finally introduced them to a rooster. The rooster was at my in-laws but he was apart of the same batch as our hens.

I find it easy to add a mature rooster to the flock of hens without the need to seperate them, but my rooster would be jealous... he only has 4 hens at the moment, but getting more soon :)

So what if one hen is pecking at the rooster and then they fight??? Like I tried having them together I was about to leave him in the coop till I saw that and separated them again kinda freaked out cuz it’s my first time seeing this I’ve never had problems before with other flicks but I didn’t want to leave him in there throughout the night if they was going to fight you know.. should I???

Is the rooster bigger then the hen? I would try letting them see each other through fence for a few days. Then try again. Put him in to roost at night.

Theyd maximum fight about half and hour no biggy they wont hurt each other the hen will understand that the rooster is the alfa and then he will start crowing and all the flock would get it that his the alfa and problem solved thats what happened to me and i was a newbie as well.

What do I do if it’s the hens attacking the rooster … not the other way around. I don’t have the setup you have man.

How to avoid rooster violence.. apart from selling or butchering extra male birds??
