Playing the Blues is not just fun to do it’s a style of guitar that sounds great. Almost every guitarist knows how to jam on Blues riffs, so playing Blues offers a way for musicians who don’t know each other to quickly connect musically. However, it goes without saying that there’s something separating a great Blues player from a novice, today we’ll find out what that is.
In this lesson, we’ll discover how to take an “A7” arpeggio and layer it over an “A7” riff. We’ll learn how it can be used in ways that not only work great, but also help you start to play and sound like a true, “Master of the Blues.”
The lick and riff work with any traditional Blues Shuffle groove by highlighting the backing chord directly through playing into the notes of an “A7” arpeggio.
Along with that, there’s an optional idea when it comes to how cool we can get with this arpeggio to sound. This idea involves adding a “4th” extension directly into the arpeggio to create one of the coolest Blues sounds around.
The “A7” arpeggio is great for covering the sound of an “A” Dominant 7th chord, but we can spice it up and take it one step further. To do that, we’ll add an extra note using a “4th” extension placed into the “A7th” arpeggio. This extra degree sits four tones away from the “A7” arpeggios Root - adding a new note of “D.”
