An Amazing Encounter Between Adine & the Wild Albino Elephant and Her Herd

  • Adine recently bumped into our private reserve's wild herd of elephants and was excited to see the reserve's adult female albino elephant again!
    Our orphanage is located by Jabulani, in the Kapama Private Game Reserve (Greater Kruger National park). The reserve is home to a rare albino female elephant. She was first seen shortly after being born in 2010. Like Khanyisa, she was a bright pink-skinned baby elephant and this caught the world's attention.
    Albino African elephants are rare and keeping track of the wild cow helps us to anticipate what to expect as Khanyisa ages. In a happy coincidence, the wild albino cow gave birth at around the same time Khanyisa was born and while her calf shows no signs of albinism, it is a joy to watch her raise her calf while the Jabulani herd raises Khanyisa.
    Now around 11 years old, the Kapama albino elephant remains in excellent condition and is thriving with her close-knit herd. Like Khanyisa, her eyes are sensitive to the sunlight, but she has adapted extremely well.
    Seeing how well the wild albino elephant is doing gives us such hope for young Khanyisa's future and we look forward to continuing to share her journey!

    It seems to me that the reason they are so relaxed with you Adine, is that they have seen you with the other ellies and smell them on you. Plus you talk to them very softly to acknowledge them and don't make any loud noises. How beautiful to watch this scene unfold. Thanks for sharing it with us.

    Khanyisa is careful with the light, closing her eyes shut or letting just a little opening against the glare of the sun, while using her trunk to find leaves or grass, so I know she wasn't sleeping. You commented on it if I remember it right. Being extremely sensitive to light and sunlight myself I was looking for it . As a child, before I got my life saving sunglasses, I mastered a few tricks like Khanyisa to help me with the pain. Closing one's eyes bring such relief! How marvelous to have a wild albino cow in the reserve living a normal life and thriving as you wrote. Looking forward to seeing many years of a happy thriving Khanyisa.Thank you HERD

      What kind of life saving sunglasses do you have? I ask because my son was diagnosed with ocular albinism as a baby per some brain wave test. He is very fair skinned but, thankfully doesn't burn with sunscreen on. At the time, he had alot of brain anomalies. Over the years (he's 25 now) some of the brain anomalies have gotten better and some have not. My son has more blue pigment in his eyes than Khanyisa but is still very sensitive to the sun and bright lights.

    • @isawa6649
      @isawa6649 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kellydrummond9677 Life saving because of the comfort it brought me. If I didn't need prescription glasses, sunglasses bought in a supermarket would be OK I guess. In any case I am always very particular about the shape of the frame so the sunlight never reaches my eyes (frame very close to my eyes a bit curved so the light doesn't reach my eyes from above or sideways) with very dark brown tinted glasses. I do not have albinism nor ocular albinism. I am just very sensitive to bright lights because of a different condition. Sunglasses all year around outside and double tinted prescription glasses at home. Soft light at home helps as well. As my daughters say I should have been living before electricity existed.... I don't know if I helped I hope I did.

    Awesome herd; all healthy looking & as expected surrounding the two calves right away until albino mom & others recognized soft Adine’s voice talking to them. It’s great to have been following the wild herd bc it’s easier to approach them that close & hearing their rumbles ‘saying’ it’s safe. Of course, there’s always an overprotective one; wonder if the male that approached the jeep with a stronger rumble (like a roar kind of rumble) is the little calf’s dad. He was not so trusting, which it’s good in the wild. - Imagining ‘our’ Khanyisa growing up looking this good makes my heart happy! Thank you for showing us this wonderful encounter!💗🐘💗

Whereas the wild herd keep roaming or sleeping in the bush at night. The rescued elephants did not know wildlife before they arrived in our reserve so they are living much more natural lives now. During the day both herds roam through the reserve but the rescued herd have carers following them, and keeping them safe, especially with the youngest orphans around. But otherwise they are the same. The rescued herd come from Zimbabwe originally but are also Savannah elephants 🐘

    What a lovely sight to see these wild elephants, casual but still guarded, and I imagined they could smell the Jubalani Herd on Adine! They most probably know their scent from the dung and hear them occasionally! It was so wonderful to watch the baby resting in the shade of mum and then later others came to give some extra protection just in case! What stunning creatures we have on our planet.........it makes it even more poignant that Little Miss K is thriving and may one day give the herd a baby of her own! Imagine the cuteness overload if it has Little Miss K's character too! Thank you Adine for sharing such an amazing unexpected encounter!

    Perhaps it is family of Khanisa she look at her and she is a albino how special shall this be when they met each other. How special is it that they come to your area place. You never forget this. This is also a wonderful herd. From Kruger park I think? Khanyisa the sad story is the "snare" because that her skin is not so dark as this other Albino calf. This meeting of you is a gift from heaven. We can share this moment as lovers of the elehants. Thank you for sharing this special unique moment.You shall meet this herd again the have your smell Adine and they never forget feel your emotion yes they never forget and feel your love for them like your own Jabulani Herd.

    I would think that because their different upbringings and territorial issues, each herd will try to avoid each other> That's why they mark their territories isn't it? Besides The Herd family have their carers. They will try to prevent problems

      @Jude300c 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that why most animals mark their territory. Also why some are quick to aggress especially if they made it clear through scent and sound that they are there and this is where they live.

      Claudette: Somehow reading this beautiful tribute (to our beautiful Adine!💝) brought tears to my eyes. We all know how truly wonderful she has been to elephants(and Rhinos of course) and all animals really and our beloved Jabulani herd, yet it is so wonderful to see her acknowledged and honored in this way and also yes "the many extraordinary things we are able to witness because of this loving lady"...and of course we know she was rightly chosen woman of the year in Africa last year (and for me will forever hold the title). Thank you Adine💖 for being you, the carers💞 for their loving dedication and the staff💟❣ that support all of this at our beloved Jabulani !👍👍👍👍👍💓
