    I bought a 390FE from a salvage yard in San Antonio a couple years back that was in excellent shape for my 77 Ford F150. With the Holley 700CFM double-pumper I had on it and a Crane Racing Cam it was putting out 335 HP and 377 torque. I took it down to see if I could bore it more and found it was at it's limit but a buddy of mine said put 428 crank in it and some wedge pistons and re-timed it. I got her up a little over 400 HP. I wish I had kept that truck I would have donated that engine to ya. In that light F100 that thing would rock! Really enjoying your series on the F100!

    I was bummed that your engine did not make at least 300 HP to the rear tires. The Ford cast iron intake is holding it back. An Edlebrock high rise dual plane intake would most likely get it there plus. Those old cast iron intakes are very restrictive. It will also make a ton more torque. You have everything else in place to make over 335 HP which is what that engine should easily make. Another great video! Enjoyed it.

      I would agree but I think those stock heads won't let it get much more HP I didn't see what castings they were but to the crank, a decent stock FE head are really only good to 350hp. So to the wheels he would prob be limited to 300hp. But I think he's putting a ls anyway :(

Just had it on the dyno yesterday after doing a hydraulic roller cam conversion top end kit from Edelbrock. I was nervous for you filming that close. My 1pc driveshaft let go at 5600rpm and dented my exhaust and put a hole in the floor. Be careful! Those old motors will make power but probably never spun that fast so make sure your drive line is designed to take it.

  • @GorillaCookies
    @GorillaCookies 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The intake and ignition are a roadblock to a decent increase in power. A CDI ignition system providing the spark for a Hall effect trigger electronic distributor that's been recurved. And the addition of a classic Edelbrock Streetmaster intake manifold would provide you with a noticeable increase in power without question. The comp 270h cam isn't giving you what you could get from a Comp Cams 268H which is fantastic in a mild 390. It's significantly better for mild 390 than that 270 is. The 270 is pretty damn good in a 428 but a 390 can't take full advantage of it's potential. But the 268h is a completely different story in a 390. I've been building Fe engines for 30 years and learned a few things . That 390 would be putting down 325-335 rwhp with a few very specific changes. Header primary size is very important and should be taken into consideration depending upon what factory Fe heads used . Factory head castings are definitely not all the same. Some very common FE heads can provide a significant amount of performance where others substantially inhibit power production on the same displacement size engine

    • @Beemernow
      @Beemernow ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't know if you're still around, but 30yrs building these fe engines has me wanting to ask you a question? I'm right now trying to decide what to change on my 360 fe converted to a 390 by way of just crank and rods, to get some more torque without going nuts. So, you're saying, Edelbrock Streetmaster intake manifold, 268h for the cam, guessing long tube headers and what for the ignition? Thanks for your time!!

    • @danontherun5685
      @danontherun5685 ปีที่แล้ว

      I changed 68 Gt intake to quality aftermarket intake for 14hp gain, not worth the bux or the work. Best bux were on good long tube headers and front disk brakes. For big power gain install good super charger, carb and adequate fuel pump, minimal mileage impact. That HEI ignition with good coil should work but isolate plug wires as even MSD wires will arc at high load. Use tire dyno to set relief valve to avoid detonation. Need adequate transmission and traction bars. A super charged truck will probably end up a tree trunk ornament.@@Beemernow

Flip it around.....lol Dennis Carpenter as well as a few other parts places have OE replacement fan shrouds. Think they are $130- $150? I like your videos thanks ..keep them coming it gives me the encouragement to do more to my camper special ...I'm surprised at the numbers I have a 390 in my 69 and the book says with the factory 2bbl either autolite or motor craft it has 265 base HP at 4,500rpm . With the Holly 4bbl you added I'm assuming it's a600cfm I thought it would break 300HP ...I ran the big 500CFM 2bbl for awile now I'm using the 350cfm 2bbl I do know there is a difference in the heads from a truck vs a 390 Ford Fairlane or mustang .
    I wonder if the truck heads are restricting that 4bbl flow

    • @330_garage3
      @330_garage3  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I believe those published HP numbers were at the flywheel. Keep in mind it made 270hp at the tires, through that 3 spd. trans and some tall rear end gears. They say to figure 20% loss through the drivetrain, so with that estimate we would have seen 325hp on an engine dyno. For an old FE motor with headers and a Holley 670cfm I think its probably on par. People have speculated that the cast iron intake is holding it back, and some aftermarket heads would help it a lot. I just wanted to see what you could do with stock parts.

    • @TheThirdWheel618
      @TheThirdWheel618 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rewatched your vid from a year ago ...also some have said that the factory cast 4bbl intake wouldn't go over 5k rpm but you did with factory heads and intake on the dyno .
      I bought a boat anchor 4bbl on offer up boiled out and cleaned for 50 bucks .I thought about spending the cash for a edelbrock but with stock heads I doubt other than wieght savings it will give a big noticable difference unless it was a RPM intake ,

  • @Bbbbad724
    @Bbbbad724 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you convert that to flywheel hp, you are making 320 hp and 396 foot lbs of torque. That’s good for a truck 390. The truck engine had lower deck height than the car engines. The piston usually says 410 on the pin side. The piston is.100 lower than the car engine. They have good power. Congratulations!

    Heck yeah man, that’s not bad for an old truck…😃 Hurst makes a floor shifter for the 3.03 transmission if you’re interested. They work really well if they’re installed properly. Basically reverse would be over to the left and forward where first gear is normally and then first is to the left and back. Then just slam if straight forward for 2nd and straight back for 3rd… You’ll be able to shift that transmission quicker than you ever could with the column shifter. I’ve got the Mr. Gasket brand in my truck but I really want to switch over to the hurst shifter. In the future I’m gonna find a 5.0 out of an explorer and probably build a 347 with a Tremec 5 or 6 speed I haven’t decided yet. But a fuel injection swap is coming in the future. I'm wondering how you measured the compression ratio. Most cast pistons have a dish and eyebrows and are closer to 7:1 and that could explain the low power outcome. (Seems like it should be higher.In order to get a measured 10.5 to 1 out of mine, I had to use forged pistons to get a true flat top (one set of eye brows, no dish) and mill the head (That's with low riser heads, also I'm using a 428 crank) (I couldn't find a cast, true flat top piston)

    • @330_garage3
      @330_garage3  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I calculated it. I walk through what I found in another video. By using the old ford 360 4V pistons, with the 390 crank and rods, it will bring the compression up. You're right though, in today's market trying to find a cast piston to get you into the 10:1 range is hard to do. Here's the video where I walked through the calculations
