      Wow! Never heard of crumb quilting! Please tell me what kind of wonderful sewing machine do you have? I will follow you from now on. Thanks!

    I just love this type of piecing. Scrappy, improv, foundation, crazy or crumb. I love the process. Perhaps those that are struggling are thinking too much about the finished product and not just letting go and enjoying the actual piecing. It's so freeing to not worry about matching or pattern. I don't think I would ever had been a quilter if I learned only by matching everything or by sewing to a pattern. I joined a group on Facebook led by a professional quilter who was teaching method and color ways and going by the color wheel. OMG I was bored. Yuck! Not for me. I am so happy I found Darlene. She has inspired and encourage me to go with my passion of being a total scrappy improv sewer.

      I was reading a quilt blog and in one of the posts the woman said no to move forward until you get the 1/4 seam allowance perfected. I was like... wtf? No wonder so many people never try this! Too funny!

    • @ScraptasticPatchwork
      @ScraptasticPatchwork 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yep, I have seen this too. So many people striving for perfection. Nope not me. Actually what set me free from this was a video I watched awhile back about a fancy rich woman in Wales who has an amazing collection of vintage quilts. She sells them too. But her comment is the quilts people are handmaking today will not be collected in the future because people are striving for perfection and they end up looking manufactured. Why would people collect that. Its the mistakes and imperfections that tell the story of the sewer. Thats what makes them collectable.

    • @darlene.michaud
      @darlene.michaud  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I love that! And it's so true. Quilts are about love, not perfection. It's about the process, not the final product. It's about how they will be used, not how they will be viewed. We've got what it takes for that.

    I just love watching you teach. What I have gleaned is: Give it a whirl. That's how to learn something new and you won't know until you try. It'll turn out in the end so don't give up. I really enjoy your laugh and it's super cute at 2.0! I'm so glad you are down to earth and real!

    I so love this & never bored watching you sew. My grandmother made the most beloved scrap quilts. She used fabric we all donated to her, used clothing, pieces of blankets, scraps from clothing she made us grandkids,etc. Nothing was wasted & we all waited patiently for our turn to receive a quilt. All quilts were loved & used. What wonderful memories. I'm definitely gonna join in. Plan to make a doll quilt first, using flannel as my batting.
    Thanks for being you, love your personality. I do love "sing song" when I'm talking about my creative items too. 😂😂😂🌷🌷🌷

    Oh Darlene, your happy, bouncy, straight on attitude makes me feel so good. I do a lot of crumb quilting and am going to do some you tube videos soon in my own techniques. Your videos confirm that even in crumb piecing there can be different approaches. Thank you so much for all your efforts - it has encouraged me to get back to my piecing. I've been longarming for so long and haven't had much time for my own joys. You're a joy and inspiration.

    I have been binge watching your videos after watching those *perfect* videos, I have learned so freaking much about being a beginner sewer. I have realized that 1. I'm not perfect (well I knew that part) and that 2. Nothing I sew is going to be perfect. :-) everything I have sewed since watching your videos is WAY BETTER than the other *perfect* items I have tried to make before. You rock..dont ever change!! Thanks for the hard work you put into your videos.

      Trayne1837 yes, i use the time to listen to music and my hands just keep piecing or tossing, when i find a way to crummy piece. And chain piecing and pressing. I love it!

    Another great video. Yesterday I started my crumb and I sewed strip after
    strip. Looks like a long train. Sewed for 2 hrs now to press them and start
    Sewing again. This sure is fun. I received my fat 16ths yesterday and my
    panda panel which I just love. I'm going to take the fat 16 and sew two
    together like you showed us and cut apart. That will really give me a great
    color combination. I could watch you all day I love when you laugh🌺

    I put a lot of my crumbs into colorways and then cut them into 3 inch strips of any legnth. Then i roll those onto toilet paper rolls to be used as strips in my quilting. That is how I make my flag quilts.

    Well, just like you don't have to make one block at a time, you don't have to press it all at once. But once you get one "streamer" full pressed and cut apart the little 2-piece bits, you will get more excited and want to press the rest. Well, maybe. Hah! I do enjoy that "clothesline" method of piecing crumbs and larger scraps.

    One of the things I have found helpful on our adventure is when I have 2 larger pieces or pieces I think needs broken up, I lay one on top of the other and I sew 1 seam, then I swing it around and sew another seam. Then I cut between the 2 seams and I have 2 new sewn pieces. I hope that makes sense lol.

    I need to ask something, because I'm very frustrated with my quilt. I've been working on it a while. I am at the stage now, where I have joined 14 6 inch squares together, with a common fabric strip in between. Now, it is time to join those strips together. I am getting uneven seams now, where the strips in between the squares are not lining up. I can provide a picture if needed, but I am ashamed of it. lol. It's my first quilt. I wanted to do a crumb quilt so that I wouldn't be out a lot of money if I fail. However, now I realize I will be out a lot of time if I fail. lol

      + TheRealMrsMVP; There is No Fail only Try! I learned to quilt a few years ago. I started with an Insane match every seam, 1/4 in seam cut to perfection, or it will not look correct, like the pattern tells you. RULES APPLIED! No, the quilt was Far from perfect. Guess what, I finished it and I use it. I learned from the experience. I had to keep going because I refused to let the Rules beat me. I thought of learning to quilt for 5 years. I had to do it. I have been sewing for almost 50 years and I wasn't about to let that project defeat me. Many of the professional quilters say, Finished is better than Perfect. Yes, all quilts are a thing of Love, not Beauty. Hear Hear for all of us who Try!
