    I'm a disabled Veteran from a military family, being born on an Army base. My mother's ancestors fought for the Union my fathers the Confederacy. I've never I heard either side bemoaning how many "Aryans" have died in support of our military. The basis for the majority of this bigotry and racism is family orientation. My father's side most certainly expressed racist and prejudiced views, my mothers had little to no contact with people of other races, so they harbored minor levels of prejudice, because there are frequently reasons for stereotyping, and it frequently results in prejudice born of ignorance. Because white men are being bombarded with the "replacement narrative more and more are going too far right. I believe a level of Civil War (disintegration) is inevitable and likely not far away.

      @@darklyripley6138 You'd have to be borderline mentally disabled to think BLM are terrorists. "Antifa" do use violence to achieve political goals, which is super problematic. But their goals aren't genocide. So.. yeah.

    • @darklyripley6138
      @darklyripley6138 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pqunit BLM are terrorists. They use violence to pursue and achieve political goals. I’ve worked in many areas that were under riot by BLM and Antifa. I’ve seen first hand what they do. They murder people, set fire to blocks, beat people, pull people from their vehicles and beat them, encourage violence, carry out terrorist attacks, and straight up assassinations on a few occasions. Their rhetoric alone has led to bloodshed. Look at the Dallas sniper, and Baton Rouge gunman. Both of them directly cited BLM as an inspiration. Even the so called “leaders” of BLM claim to be marxists and openly speak about the need for violence to achieve their goals.
      And let’s not even get into how bad Antifa is. They shot two black kids, mocked one, then executed him in the middle of the street. So much for black lives mattering. Or how about when they tried to murder a 17 year old in Kenosha. Fortunately he was able to defend himself, but that just goes to show how violent these people are.
      Their goals aren’t genocide? First off, that’s a super low bar. You’re basically saying “Yeah, they destroy peoples homes and livelihoods, murdered dozens and dozens of people, beat people, pull white people from their vehicles and beat them, encourage violence, and have led directly to numerous mass shootings, but at least their goal isn’t genocide!”. Like, really? Congratulations, want a cookie? If that’s the standard you hold people to, you have no morality.
      Secondly, why does that matter? Are you trying to say there are genocidal people? Where are they? What have they done? Outside of a few cases, which admittedly are tragic and should be condemned, they aren’t out there doing anything. They certainly don’t have the support or power that BLM and Antifa have.

    Hey Vice, hire a couple of journalists or collaborate with freelance journalists who have served in our military.
    Service members (SM) from different branches have different perspectives as well, and the active duty experiences of a Marine, Soldier, Sailor, and Airman will be different. A combat arms SM will have a different experience than combat support. That will give you a much better look into this fringe movement.

    If the Republican party believes the military has a PR problem from all these negative reports coming out, maybe the Senate Armed Services Committee should not have barred that budget line to investigate the issue. The US government has always been accused of a transparency and accountability problem, so why should the largest, most expensive military in the history of the world also not be held to their own account? If the perception of extremism is truly what is hurting their enlistment numbers, maybe they need to be providing concrete evidence of its real prevalence instead of just hinting at its extent? And maybe it might be more to the point that military service and the benefits it claims to provide are not offering much of a sustainable, prospering lifestyle and career path as it once did.

    Inside The Military's Extremism Problem | Field Notes
    It must be difficult for people who have not served in our military to fully understand what such experience is like. I served in the Marine Corps in the early 1980’s (Cold War) in the MOS of 4421; Legal Services Specialist. It was an easy admin job compared to most other jobs in the Corps. My duties dealt with typing up charge sheets for courts-martial or Article 15 hearings, JAG Manual investigations, filing documents, researching base orders, etc., all before personal computers were introduced. I saw a lot of abuse of power and some cover-ups to protect officers’ carriers. What a didn’t see was extremism. Yes, there was some self-segregation based on race during off-time, but racism was not prevalent.
    Ben pointed out extremism increases when troops return home from combat. Perhaps this is why I didn’t see extremism or racism during my time in service which was a time of relative peace. Starting in boot camp, I recall our drill instructor saying to us “There are no black Marines or white Marines. There are only green Marines. Some are light green and some are dark green but our blood is red and we are brothers one and all.” or words to that effect. Racism was not tolerated.
    Professor Kathleen Belew of Northwestern University observed “we know how it works, we just don’t have the real-time information to know exactly where we are.” Around 2010, while working for a government services contractor, I recall a warehouse worker was fired for accessing a porn site on a government computer. By then, computers were ubiquitous, and access were controlled by use of a common access card (CAC), which identifies who is logged onto a computer. And I recall our systems administrator cautioning us with “Every keystroke is recorded somewhere.” The point is the DoD has the capability to identify who embraces extremist views. The DoD can identify the enemy within.
    Ben said “The Senate Armed Services Committee literally put a stop to it. They put a line in a budget this year to direct the Pentagon to stop looking into this. And to stop putting funds into this.” This is surprising to me. However, I could not find the legislation he is referring to.
    Something I did find of interest is a Congressional Research Service paper titled FY2022 NDAA: Extremism in the Military IN11779 (congress.gov)

    • @TheMcgojoh
      @TheMcgojoh ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interesting to hear of your service during the cold war and while the Marines may have their saying about "only green Marines" I think you'll have to admit the USA does have issues with racial tension/ Here in Canada I had a friend who was with the Canadian Airborne Regiment in the mids 80's to get his "wings" and after the Somalia affair he said the regiment was quite full of Nazi sympathizer's (de rigueur of the times youth in the Skinhead movement and such I'm sure you'll recall) and racist and his wasn't surprised by the happenings that led to the Regiments disbandment. That said I believe there are problems across all Western Militaries with extremism and with the youth in particular it seems to break out in cases of leather and swastikas look no further to Germany or the Donbas region to see cases of the minority of soldiers following such trends. What worries me about the USA is that most of these guys seem long in the tooth, and they should have dropped such notions by now.

    • @toprope_
      @toprope_ ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good points and thanks for sharing your own personal experience. My only concern comes from when the DoD or military has the capability to tackle and look deeply into new trends of extremism in armed services but doesn’t bother using its power. It’s something they’d probably want to do anyways, figuring out what they need to reform or being able to say “they all go extreme after they leave, they’re still somewhat down to earth in the corps” are both strong ways to show the public their concerns are being listened to.
      Growing up post 9/11, I know many people who graduated HS and went into the military but would avoid a branch because its recruits were “too weird” and rarer instances of people who used to want to be a soldier but stopped because the military had politicized itself/with help from Congress from things like Gay enlistment and the Punisher/operator culture.

The conversation i ahvr overheard, the centralized racsim masked as patriotism in certain circles is at best alarming, at worst very very cancerous.
      Both my parents were retired career police officers in a major northeastern city. MY Family is black and latino- majority of us are educated. The racsim my parents witnessed was loathsome. My mother was one of THE FIRST black women to graduate from that cities police academy- I witnessed how hard it was with old white guys and their prejudices on my mother( during the late 70s going into the mid 80s). My parents membership in the FOP offered me nor my friend no protection from harassment by white cops in that city-full stop, while watching our white counterparts be given passes for transgressions like loitering, that we were not committing.
      I joined the military some time ago and there are pockets where the BS does not stop. Sure the are a fair amount of equal protection that our forces guve our service members BUT IF YOU THINK that there is not a good ol' boy network still alive in the military, you are wrong- very very wrong. People have prejudices, period. The problem is that some see their prejudices as a sense of" its just how things are" entitlement. I am.not saying that every white person in uniform or with a badge is a racist as that has nit been my experience, but the people who have gone out of their way to try to F-with me have happened to have badges and have been in uniform. Not saying all my interactions have been that way but for some reason, some people thing their badge or rank is the equalizer to my 6' 240lb frame- it's not.

    Literally saying that some people in the military have committed violent acts in the name of right wing extremism being at fault rather than the government who issued the orders. doing anything possible to put the blame on the average man rather than the government. Talk about cognitive dissonance. Who do you think gives the military the ok to carry out violence?

    I think you all need to define what "extremism" and "far right" actually means in the context you're using it in. Because it kinda comes off like it's supposed to be vague and anyone who speaks out of line can get the label. And if we have a system that is driving people to distrust and feel disdain for the government in unprecedented numbers, do you think maybe there could be something rotten with the system that drives people to these conclusions?

      Yes, lack of education. Also the fact that student loans are causing people to be in debt most of their lives does not help. Education needs to be taken more seriously and become more integrative. It feels like a lot more people are unable to comprehend anything past grade 3 level knowledge.
      Other things are health and infrastructure, mininum wage. Minimum wage has not gone up much, while housing, rent, food, and everything else has gotten exponentially more expensive. 50% of millennials are living with parents, and the generational wealth gap is already causing a lot of problems.

      Really? Seems like extremism is pretty obvious in that they promote and train to commit violent acts to get their way. That is literally what all extremist, aka terrorists groups do. The only difference between an extremist and a terrorist group is the terrorists groups have actively carried out the violent attacks.
      And the far right are those who tend to (not all) to lean toward extreme right wing ideas such as fascism. Some to extreme nationalist and race based politics. Or those combative to minorities that don't fit their group.
      Both terms are pretty well defined in literature on and offline. So I have to wonder why you are confused by the definitions? Or if you are just trying to muddy the definitions.
