Comgrow Z1 Laser Engraver Review: Engraving, cutting on different wood boards using 10W laser module

  • Welcome back to Aurora Tech Channel. Two weeks ago, I reviewed the Mini Engraver. It was my first engraver, and I had a lot of fun with it. It can engrave on many different materials, including paper, cloth, wood, glass and coated metal, but it was not designed for cutting. Today I am going to review this Comgrow Z1 Laser Engraver. The major difference between this and the mini-Engraver is that the Z1 has a larger volume, it moves much faster, and it comes with a more powerful laser module. You can choose the 5-watt laser for $299 or the 10-watt one for $499. As I would like to engrave at a higher speed and use this machine to do more cutting, I will test out the 10-watt module.
The laser module we used is a 10W. For engraving, both 5W and 10W can get the job done. The only difference is you can engrave 2 times faster using a 10W module. But for cutting, the 5W can only cut up to 4mm wood according to the manual. A 10W can cut up to 8mm of solid wood based on our own test. Great video! Air assist will greatly improve your ability to cut with a diode laser. It will blow the ash and smoke out of the way so your cuts are more effective. One of the tricks that I use for cutting depth is to adjust my focal length with the spacer for my fixed focus laser and then lower it half of the thickness of what I want to cut.
During your video, you mentioned the smoke damage on your finished product. A couple of tips for that are to take multiple cuts at lower power and higher speed. For my OLM2 I typically set it to 300 @50% power and do 4-7 passes depending on what type of wood I am cutting. Play with your power, speed and passes settings and you can get it down to almost no smoke damage. Also if you're worried about the smoke damage to the bottom of your piece, you can raise it up on something like a cooling rack from a dollar store.

Keep it up, Aurora! Thank you so much!! It's always a pleasure to hear your review!!! Btw, there are some tips for you. It is recommended that the automatic zero return at boot can be unchecked, and the focal length of the 10W laser head seems to be not very accurate. It is 45mm and it's better to cut at this focal length to achieve better results.

I bought a 7watt laser engraver a couple of years back and had a lot of fun with it. Even engraved the cloth pegs, nothing was safe. I gave it away but soon did regret it and bought a 30-watt Neje. A lot of fun and your video inspired me to take it a step or two further over Christmas. I also could get a lot of inspiration from all the comments. That machine looks really good too, great choice. Thank you for your well-made and very inspiring video. Again I learned a lot. Keep it coming. FAN-TAS-TIC

Great presentation 😁 When you talk about lasers, you should state the optical power. The 10 Watt is the Powerconsumtion of the Lasermodule. The optical Power does the work for you. 😇

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! VERY PROFESSIONAL! thank you for not using background music over your voice so i could hear you! im using LINUX! will your computer work with a FREE! Linux program instead of "lightburn" i suspect it will, im new to this and so i dont know what Linux uses but im certain they have a program for doing this! thank you again for not using background music! its actually very painful and gives me a headache and is most annoying. most programs i avoid because of this and its sad because many of these are good videos but when you try to explain this to people they threaten to kill you! they love their background music and their face! and constantly show me their face instead of the item. and thank you for the price!

love the video. Thanks for being so thorough. i was thinking about getting this thing but was unsure if the 10w laser was actually 10w and could manage to cut plywood in one go.
Well, it looks like it does :)
but please please please - 11:10 - you should ALWAYS wear the goggles. the protector on the laser is just an additional layer of protection. theres still a 2mm gap where light leaks through. looking at it without goggles is still dangerous and can and will damage your eyes when exposure is too long or too frequent.

Hi, Thanks for the great videos, always love your reviews, always informative and straight to the point without the waffling. I am looking for an engraver that can engrave on brass/copper but the metal is not flat it is metal bees and i want to engrave names on the wings. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Again thanks for the reviews guys. x

Great video. Loved. The detailed show and intro to the Z1! One thing however is the clear t shirt looking piece there is what you space and focus your laser with, not the piece of wood. It's too close and is over burning the image. Just thought I let ya know. Keep up the great videos. I just got this Z1 so that's how I know.

Good Night, at the beginning of the month I bought a Laser COMGO z1, I assembled it and the first problem I had was the communication of the Lap top with the Laser, so I had to install the wifi to communicate with the laser from my smart phone. I could but the laser only moves on the "X" axis and the "Y" axis does not work. I need your guidance to see how I can make it work well. could you give me some recommendations. I bought the laser on Amazon Mexico. thank you for your support.

if you could lower the height of the laser it could cut thicker wood, that is why a laser connecter to a 3d-printer is a better solution, in lightburn you can lower the heght of the laser after each pass. try to mount the same laser on a 3d printer and connect to the 3d printer your pc with lightburn. the laser can be connected to the cooling fan of the nozle which is pwm (and nearly all the laaser accept pwm). have fun ;)

Nice review. I'd like to cut some balsa wood for RC model projects. Do you think the 5w would suffice for 6mm balsa?
Can you send gcodes to the controller?

    • @AuroraTech
      @AuroraTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I am not sure about that, but I guess 5W laser may still be able to cut 6mm if you do 2 passes. Yes, you can load a gcode file from the program and send it to the machine.

Descent review. I would suggest though that every review contain an accuracy demonstration using a circle measured with calipers. My current issue with this laser cutter/engraver is one of accuracy. When cutting large objects, a mm or even a half-mm may not be an issue. When cutting objects that must mesh, like boxes, 0.1mm is significant.

Merely sand the stand and the burn goes bye bye! You could also install and air system which reduces burning greatly!

      Please try:
      1. If you are using windows, check the device manager and see if a new COM port is showing up when you connect the engraver
      2. Try to close all programs that may occupy the COM port and only run LightBurn
      3. Try to use LaserGRBL instead of LightBurn and see if it connects
If none of them work, contact the manufacturer.

@@AuroraTech hello thank you for the reply
So it had connected and worked for a few minutes then it just kept going to the corner like if it was homing but it made a bad noise then everything stopped connecting.
      Light burn and lasergrbl
Light burned worked for moments at a time but would disconnect and laser grbl did not work at all lol
      I uninstalled the drives
      Installed them again
      Nothing
I uninstalled then restarted my pc then installed again
Then it started working for another like 15 mins n half way through a print it stopped and disconnected again.
I had got frustrated and gave up lol
I messaged the seller and the said sounds like a corrupt USB port.
Not sure but will try messing with it again later today Lol..
Thanks for your responses and help though !
Very educational and fun to watch. You seem like h have tons of fun in your little warehouse you have going on lol
Keep it up ! And thank you again !

I think you can connect to another computer and start over to make sure if it was a Windows USB to COM port driver issue or the engraver itself. You may also email me the screenshot to show how LaserGRBL won't be able to connect. auroratechchannel@gmail.com

I've been seeing some worrying things about the lifetime of these diode lasers (huge power losses after only 10s of hours of 100% power). Since you are doing so much cutting at 100% power, can you keep track of this and let us know what sort of degradation you see over time.

  • @wangandy2551

Thanks Aurora for the review, It's an exciting weekend! The LaserGRBL has also tested the Comgrow Z1, which the developer believes is the most powerful diode engraver he has used so far. If you use the latest LaserGRBL software, you can even see the developer recommending the Z1 in the software, Comgrow is so lucky! th-cam.com/video/j8oZxkKOBpI/w-d-xo.html
