For years I carried 3 woods (D, 3, 5), 2-9 irons, PW, SW, P. I'd hit driver on every non-par 3 off the tee, use the 3 or 5 wood on the second shot to a par 5, hit the SW only in a bunker and the PW for EVERY other shot within about 110 yards of the green. Finding the 2 and 3 irons too difficult to handle, those 2 clubs were only in my bag for decoration. Strangely, I could hit a 4 iron really well.
Now I carry 4, and sometimes 5, wedges (48 to 64 degrees in 4 degree increments). Pelz completely changed the way that I approach the game. Where once I played to a handicap between 8 and 12, it's now 2-4. The only difference being in the shots around the green. I don't putt any better and my drives are about the same, but the approach and short game shots are much more dialed in.

Thanks to this wonderful video (should have a million views), I've totally changed my bag and now have 4 wedges (PW is 47deg + 3 x Vokey SM-7: 52, 56, 60) and have spent a lot of time working on my game around the green and from about 90m (100yd) in. What a massive difference I have noticed. My new wedge game takes a lot of pressure off my approaches and of course I am hitting far fewer putts. A massive improvement in a short timeframe (and a few $$). It's a bit like an unfair advantage - there is gold in these stats! Thank you from Sydney, Dave

Fantastic info!. Based on this, for a 96 avg. player, cut down the number of putts from 40 to say 30 in a round (only 25% improvement), and you are already hitting 86 avg. WOW! Of course, you cut down the putts by becoming better at chipping and pitching, so... off to the practice range! Thanks for the amazing advice Golf Channel!

Gold insights here and quite sobering. Match these numbers with what usually goes on at the driving range and it's little wonder that so few of us are good golfers. My handicap took its biggest fall when I started frequenting a pitch and putt facility and swung the practice needle heavily towards the shorter game. Now I need to rethink my bag and swing that needle even further - more wedges. Thank you so much for this wonderful content. I'm planning to be in Austin in the next 12 mths and will try to get to do a session or two with Dave. Cheers and thanks from Sydney, Aust - Dave

Great series this! I use 5 iron's x2.5 most rounds. Rest are wedges, woods and putter when scoring under 80 is mainly, due to wedging close and sinking more putts from 6 ft -12ft

Chipping is the best way to improve your game, if I’m chipping good I get a lot more pars

I’d have to say the order should be driving, wedging, putting.

I thought the average handicap was down to 14 which should give the average round of about 84-86 shouldn't it?

You have to get up near the green first.

That’s a big target with lots of room for error. The closer you get to the hole the smaller the target gets and the more it’s going to effect your score. You can slice a drive and still make birdie, but if you miss a birdie putt you can only make a par.

Adding a lob wedge helped, but what REALLY helped is employing Phil Mickelson's "Secrets of the Short Game" approach to hitting wedges (oh yeah, he spent a lot of time with Dave Pelz here). It's ALL about getting the ball to 1 putt range when you miss the green on your approach shot (often). I swear, emulate Phil's "hinge and hold" technique and your game from even out to 50 yards will really improve. You'll amaze yourself.

Terrible location to learn wedge play. Artificial surfaces all over, which forgive heavy shots encouraging sloppy unrealistic ball striking dynamics. Good venue for the sun lounger though. He means well but this is a mile away from all but the most elite playing surfaces.
