In Decmber I decide on the series for next year. I select my passages and theams at that time. This realy helps my ministry team. This helps me to write the sermons. If I am getting blocked on one message I can move to another and then come back. The prep that works for me is..
1. Pray over the passage.
2. Write a purpose statement for the sermon: This is what I want the listener to take home with them.
3. I outline the sermon making sure each point acomplishes the purpose: I like to write this outline before research so that I am not preacing someone elses message.
4. I then do my research making notes that are tagged to the part of the outline they deal with.
5. At this point the sermon almost writes itself.
