Where is the story part about Mr Barnes? Who got one of the “best” scores against Morphy... (still lost heavily) apparently due to Morphy being kind of sick or unwell during that time
Hello everyone! And welcome back to the good stuff. We are continuing the Paul Morphy saga. The dog is on the couch and he actually remembered to shut off the speakers under him. At 6:38 he leaves his seat, there is a great action shot of the dog dashing off the couch. He goes to answer the door to his woman at 7:21 she can be seen in the background. There is a strange sound at 9:07.
The most interesting part for me was when you said that “if Barnes can castle, Queenside, then it’s all over for Morphy and Morphy realizes this” This is what distinguishes Morphy’s play besides his ingenious traps and his aggressiveness, is the fact that all of this happens, just barely a step ahead of his opposition in many situations. He understands that Speed kills and the loss of even one or two tempos In the early game can be catastrophic.
@5:38, why mr. Barnes moved the rook? It was a fake attack. Morphy's bishop was pinned and the white queen, ungarded. Why not attack the bishop with the pawn?
a good question! If the pawn attacks the pinned bishop, white can just unpin with Qh6+ and black would probably block with Rg7. But then white would have to move the white bishop back. That might be a better position for black!
I wish life would "give you a couple of seconds" sometimes. I might not catch all the best moves, but getting it right every now and again really is rewarding.
Nice game, I tried to follow it with an engine, it just shows how chess is different right now .. Basically they went from blunder to blunder... it went from +2.7 to -1.9 at some point (one move).. then from -2.5 to +2.2 , again from one move .. Then I stopped checking and enjoyed the game lol
Sacrifices often play out differently w/ an engine vs a human. Morphy's sacrifices were probably objectively losing for most of the game. But even objectively losing sacrifices can work in human games because with humans there's always a chance that you'll miss one of the lines.
@@halfaheartbongobongo Not on the top level buddy .. maybe me and you are playing .. any 2600+ nowadays would have cleaned this up so fast ... Also read what I said again, it wasn't one bad sacrifice, the bar was going up and down the entire game ..
At 1:06...f6 is the only move which protects the e5 pawn and also prevents Ng5! (If allowed then there's no way to save the f7 pawn from falling). A move which even Stockfish recommends in this position.
3:25 can someone explain to me why going queen to E6 would be bad? I dont know if I'm missing something but you check the king, if he moves his king then you have a free rook. Same with the bishop. If he moves his knight to e7 to guard against the check and and protect the rook then you can move queen at E5 taking the centre pawn. Like I said, there is probably something I'm missing, would just like to know what it is, I may of missed something completely obvious.
Your problem is you're assuming too much. Beginners always like to throw in checks just because the opponent "may miss" something and they can win material. You shouldn't think that way. Unless you have a (preferrably forced) way of winning material, you shouldn't go for a move, specially when you're attacking. It's best to bring more pieces into the action. Moving a wayward queen alone usually accomplishes nothing. In fact, white's already material down. That being said, Qe6+ certainly doesn't lose on the spot, but you are simply asking black to play Ne7, blocking the check, defending the pawn on d5, defending the rook on g8, and preparing Bc7, kicking the queen out. Black pieces are not very well coordinated, and by playing Qe6+ you're helping black set up a strong defense with all his pieces which (mind you) are more than what you have. White's whole plan relies on black not being able to castle and bring the a8 rook into play, thus meaning black is a whole rook down. White puts the a1 rook into play, and is effectively a whole rook up. These are all things you need to consider when you play. Not simply throw in the first check you see just because your opponent may not defend appropriately and then lose a piece.
I am confused 5:33 he says there's a threat of capturing the rook g8 However, it's in black best interest for white to capture the rook so that Barnes can take the White's queen on h5. If there's something I'm missing, please tell me. I've had the video paused for 10 minutes straight now trying to find my mistake in overseeing something 😂 Thank you🙃
He moved the rook to take it to a safe square because ofcourse Morphy wouldn't capture it because his queen would hang so he would kick black queen and then capture it which he did kick nevertheless. Rook e7 was just to be on the safer side and also add another defender to mate and it was a good move at both of them are really good players so we can't expect silly mistakes like queen hang or letting rook stay a target
You are indeed correct, don't worry. Bishop takes rook cannot be immediately played. Agadmator mentions it as a threat, but indeed morphy wouldn't go for it immediately, since it loses the queen as you pointed out.
6:52 what about bishop to C5, then pawn to F4? Sacrifice the bishop, advance the pawn, kick away the rook, force a mate with the queen. What am I missing? Could this work?
Quick question. At 3:26 in the video, when Q is on F6, why not move to E6, put the king in check, and pick up the rook? Still newer to chess, but it seems all too obvious of a move not to do.
4:00 / 9:44 -- Prior to Nd8, Barnes is crushing Morphy, being up piece in an over Black favoring -3 engine rating situation if he finds the star move, which is *R*d8 (sacrificing his h-pawn to Morphy's queen, but then followed by Rd6, and a lot of firepower is transferred to open space on the kingside). Even with less optimal play, Black remains solidly ahead if Ne8, f4 (both played), Qb5 (forfeiting the e-pawn to get his horribly-placed queen back into the game, as she now has access to d7). Barnes lost the game because he was unwilling to part with another pawn.
Since quarantine, I have not had a haircut but am planning on getting one soon. My hair is pretty long now, and I think when I go to the barber and they ask, "What are we doing today?" I am going to say, "Give me a Morphy."
Not an expert but.... after the queen trade, Rxf6 looks very strong with still some threats. It would be difficult for black to stop the bishop rook trade on g7, leaving Morphy up a bishop and a pawn with far superior pawn structure. Again though, I am not a top level player, so maybe I am missing something.
I saw the video you made about the Plaskett puzzle solved by Tal in 1987..could you please show a solution where Black allows White to have a Queen on the board..engines don't seem to be able to solve it even after sacrificing the knight and preparing the bishop for checkmate.
