    For me, the definitive Sherlock Holmes is Jeremy Brett, but, I have to say, for a modernised version, Benedict Cumberbatch is not only PERFECT for the role, but the way the role is written is extremely well-researched and faithful to canon.

      @ClayKayMNK 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except for the part where Sherlock's gay as opposed to the canonically abstinent (possibly asexual) Sherlock Holmes.

    • @gpgara
      @gpgara 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      That's YOUR interpretation, actually. The script for 'Sherlock,' however, has always been ambiguous in that respect ('not my area,' etc.), just like the canon. 'Married to my work,' is what we know for definite. That, and that Sherlock most definitely loves John, which is also purely canon (what else do you call the feelings between Holmes and Watson, for God's sake? There ARE, after all, many different types of love, aren't there?) The rest is subtext which is up to viewer scrutiny. Not invalidating your interpretation, or saying it'd be wrong to think so from the show -- just saying it IS one.

    • @ClayKayMNK
      @ClayKayMNK 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I completely agree! I just had a look at the feedback of first time viewers who saw The Sign of Three (which was described as a 'love letter to John', but again, ambiguous definition of love) and most thought it was blatantly obvious Sherlock is in love with John. I didn't catch it the first time (or second time I watched it) but I think the scene of goodbyes at the end of His Last Vow is completely revelatory. However, I completely agree that obviously nothing's been said explicitly so it's entirely left to interepretation!

      As an Native born Scot, from Edinburgh, I was well aware of Dr Bell’s Story. But I do enjoy Cumberback’s version.
      But having grown up with Basil Rathborne in his First Victorian, then WW ll version. Not to forget he was a WW l hero. Jeremy Brett, was great too. Sherlock’s character has been with us a very long time. So get a good Actor, or better yet a great one, a good script, it’s bound to be a great entertainment.

    My favorite is Benedict Cumberbatch, with Robert Downey Jr. being a close second. My only problem with Downey is that I can't stop seeing him as Iron Man, not Mr. Holmes. And Benedict is too perfect! I'm also glad that you elected not to mention that abomination, the American show "Elementary."

      NoIAmNotaWeasley I agree. I absolutely HATE "Elementary". I despise the depiction of Holmes and I hate that Watson is a female.

      +NoIAmNotaWeasley I know right!! The Americanized version doesn't hold a candle to Sherlock how could you go wrong with Cumberbatch as for DOWNEY it took me awhile to get over the image of his brat-pack days chasing MOLLY RINGWALD in something or other !!? but he does a fine job playing the most physical out of the HOLMES'S keep watching!!

      Shrug I'm a hardcore Brett and Cumberbatch fan.
      Whenever Downey mugs the screen as 'hobo' Holmes he really grates on me somehow.
      I do like him as Iron Man though.

    Oh, my dear lady you are incredible! I'm Polish, I discovered you just yesterday and so I want to thank you for your canal! I'm learning and having fun at the same time - it's all thanks to you! :)) One thing I'd like to say about "choosing the right Sherock": it really does not matter which Sherlock we decide is best. What matters is what brings us here - to watching Sherlock or reading Sherlock. I'm just 22 years old so when I think of Sherlock Holmes I see the book, the stories in my mind as well as Robert D.J and Benedict Cumberbatch. I didn't have the pleasure to meet the previous ones. BUT - it all comes to what those "Sherlocks" make me do. Thanks to them (especially B.C right now) I want to go deeper and deeper into the Sherlock Holmes' world. I've just ordered the complete S.H by Arthur Conan Doyle (in english, not translated into polish) so I will learn and have fun simultanously (yeah, exactly what I've said about your videos :D) It's been more than a year since I've watched the first "Sherlock" episode (TV show, I mean). Because I've loved it from the very first moments I watched all the rest till the end without subtitles, then again with english subtitiles and with polish ones at last because my mum wanted to see that too. I love the sensation when I need to stretch my brain so hard watching these episodes, trying to catch every word :) As always it seems that the best way to learn something and to find the right motivation is to fall in love (with character, actor, book, place, music, person - doesn't matter). One can do everything (including learning foreign language) when is in love.
    Love is the key. :)) So don't fight about the faces and focus on your reason to read or watch any Sherlock you like. :)
    Apologise for my mistakes. Greetings from Poland:)
    Dominika.

    As I was raised watching the Basil Rathbone movies, I certainly feel a natural affinity for his portrayal. However, having become addicted to the iteration devised by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat, I must place Cumberbatch's portrayal of the modernised Holmes, with his smartphone and nicotine patches, at the pinnacle. The relationship between Holmes and Watson, while true to canon, also allows for a more modern twist... especially with all of the questions about the, ahem, 'nature' of their friendship.
    Siobhan, love your episodes here. Very nicely done. ;)

    I wholeheartedly agree with Brett being my all time favorite! Another British actor I haven't seen mentioned is Ronald Howard. he played a younger Sherlock, and was absolutely amazing. It was the only American production of Sherlock Holmes, and most of the stories were originals written in the Holmes style. He's my second favorite Holmes....he was also known as Wing Commander Hayes in a Chuck Connors series. If you haven't seen his Holmes...you should!

    Jeremy Brett brought Holmes to life better than anyone. Hands down.
    Basil Rathbone certainly looked the part but his performances were a bit too dry honestly. Holmes was described as having a flair for the dramatic in Doyle's stories and Rathbone never really captured that, while Brett nailed it. Robert Downey, who I normally like very much, should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as either of those two men when it comes to Holmes.

    I grew up reading the Doyle books, and watching the Basil Rathbone / Nigel Bruce films on Sunday afternoons, but as far as I'm concerned Jeremy Brett was THE Sherlock Holmes. The Granada series are absolutely perfect adaptations of the Canon. When Sherlock and then Elementary were announced, I thought I'd love the BBC's show and hate the upstart American production, but as it turns out I far prefer Elementary to Sherlock - I simply don't care for Gatiss and Moffat's take on the character.

Though the film wast butchered by ham handed editing by the studio, it's still an absolute gem. It also has the distinct advantage of having the utterly magnificent Christopher Lee as Mycroft.

    What is the name of the type of over coat Sherlock Holmes typically wore? Some day I'd like to make a cape similar to it, only with a hood and not a collar on it. I'm mostly puzzled as to how the arm holes were done in that type of coat. I don't think the main piece has sleeves, but the arms and shoulders are covered by the smaller caplette.

    You didn't mention that the Sherlock Holmes character has somewhat it origins in Edgar Allan Poe's "Dupin" in "Murders in the Rue Morgue" written in 1841. Doyle felt obliged to mention "Dupin" in his first Holmes story "Study in Scarlet." Even Houdini commented Doyle purloined Poe's pen. hehe Saw Brett live in a Holmes play in London just before he died. He was the best, but I now prefer Cumberbatch in modern London. Jonny Lee Miller is very, very good too.

    I haven't watch that many versions but I have to say Cumberbatch, Sherlock is the best. He just so multidimensional, but I do feel that they tried to hard with his character to some extent. They keep making Cumberbatch's Sherlock this supernatural type human being to the point he has a god like status on the show. It's cool but it honestly lack realistic feel in some scenarios of the show.

    I had just seen a program about Coyle and Bell. My favorite used to be Jeremy Brett, but IMO, Benedict Cumberbatch is definitely the best Holmes ever.

    I have to say Jeremy Brett as a traditional Holmes. Cumberbatch is ok if you want to set Sherlock in the present day - and Robert Downey Jr. is great for those with an attention span of 2 mins.

    Jeremy Brett closely followed by Peter Cushing and honorary mention goes to Jonny Lee Miller
    When I was a kid the winner would have been Basil Rathbone

    My favourite Sherlock Holmes would have to be the original from the books. I've read graphic novel versions and watched a lot of movies, but all of them miss that spark that Holmes has, and they also miss a lot of the details from Watson. Does anyone remember that he no longer serves as a doctor because he was badly injured?! Everyone seems to miss everything stated in the first chapter of the first book that tells you most of what you need to know about them.
    *Not trying to be rude, so I'm sorry if it's taken the wrong way.

    RDJ is my favorite Sherlock. I like Basil Rathbone, and I have a soft spot for Tom Baker, too. But RDJ is absolutely amazing as Sherlock. I just can't get into the BBC series, though I do like Cumberbatch.

    I've heard that Holmes was also partially based on the detective in Edgar Allen Poe's short story Murders on the Rue Morgue.

    What about Poe's detective Auguste Dupin? I have always wondered who wrote the first detective story.

    Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes is my favorite. Though, I also enjoyed the Robert Stephens version of Holmes. Robert Downey Jr. did a fantastic job in his role as Holmes, though I felt his look was wrong for the character.

    I love the quirky way Cumberbatch plays Sherlock Holmes but I am old school and would have to say Basil Rathbone is my favourite.
