Every Nurse Needs These: Compression Socks Explained

  • Nurses and nursing school students: save your legs by wearing compression socks (also called compression stockings). Standing and walking around on a hard surface for 12-hours or more can be brutal on your feet and legs.
One way you can help save your legs as a nurse is to wear compression stockings (aka compression socks). These help compress your legs and improve blood flow, which helps prevent leg soreness and varicose veins from developing.
I've been wearing compression socks for years, and I also wore them toward the end of my pregnancy, too. And yes, male nurses also wear them!
There are many great brands, but I liked the cute EKG design of the ones in this video. I purchased them from Amazon for around $9.99 for a 3 pack. Here's an affiliate ad link of the ones I bought: amzn.to/3vEj9NM
They come in different compression grades, and I usually buy the 20-30 mmHg grade.
I hope that helps save your legs!

Couldn’t agree more. I do 12 hour shifts and I didn’t start wearing these until AFTER I started getting vascular ulcers, and it was too late.
They also really make your legs feel amazing. PLEASEEEE wear compression socks if your on your feet for more than 8 hours.

Thank you for making this point! Everyone who spends most of their day on their feet, especially on hard surfaces, should wear compression socks - no matter your age or profession. The difference is like night and day, no joke! This little bit of prevention is priceless when compared to the nonstop agony of the “cures” decades later.

    i have bi-lateral dvt.
if it wasn't for compression socks i'd be bed bound.
they sorta make ya feel like iron man when ya wear 'em.
wish i would have adopted wearing compression socks before i got dvt.
mountain biking real hard XC pre 2012.
    not pro, but fast amateur.
then one day after riding real hard in 90+ degree heat and letting myself get dehydrated i got a cramp in my leg.
couldn't put weight on my right leg, so hobbled into the shower, had to sit down.
    washed up, got in bed.
about 2am my right leg spasmed and i woke up real quick.
about 20 seconds later i had a PE in my lower left lung.
    passed out.
woke up the next day though.
    that's all that counts.
the brand i recommenced are Sigvaris.
if you've read this far you get the compression sock pumpkin.
    and Merrell foot wear.
don't ever take your feets and legs for granted.

Thanks Sarah! I wore compression socks for a while (although I don't think they were strong enough) and gave up lol but I might have to give them another try
Can you do a video on your favorite shoes for nursing?

My 3rd pregnancy gave me awful varicose veins 25yrs ago. Without my compression socks my feet and ankles resemble those of Fred Flintstone--no joke! As a plus size gal I am beyond thrilled I am now starting to find fun colors & patterns in my size--including those very pair featured in your video. I can not even imagine attempting on of my 12+hr shifts without my compression socks!!!

Then you need to put them on correctly. Lie down with your legs elevated above your heart. Dorsiflex your feet several times to empty your veins. Now put your socks on WITHOUT YOU GETTING OUT OF BED. BY DROPPING YOUR LEGS OVER THE BED GRAVITY FILLS UP THE VEINS. Your ankles will swell up if you put your compression socks on after sitting or standing up.
I wore knee high compression socks 44 years of 12 and 16 hour shifts.

Compressions socks are so useful. Thank you for listing the link to these in your bio. I will definitely recommend it to my mom cause she needs some new compression socks and the ones in stores here are expensive. Also do you know of any good brands with solid colors such as white, black, or tan?

I get a little nervous wearing compression socks. Last time I worn them was in nursing school 2 years ago. The one I had was fairly snug around the calf, and loose around my ankles. At the end of my clinical, my veins around my ankle looked like udon noodles. I'm guessing because the loose fit around my ankles helped the blood pool more easy?
