I was originally going to get either a Rock Island Armory or Tisas, which are very good affordable 1911 brands. But I found a steal of a deal on GB that I couldn't pass up on one of these. So my first 1911 is a long slide ported Iver Johnson Eagle XL. But it's in the standard 45 ACP. Cannot wait to get it and cannot wait to shoot it!

Icarryone, i just bought this pistol cause of this review and ordered some colt reproduction pearl grips for it haha I've always been a fan of the long slides very cool pistols! wish there was more 1911's out there in this kind of configuration. There was once also a Browning HI-power long slide built in low production numbers at one point, and of course the iconic AMT long slides were also very neat had some reliability issues but I'm sure the flaws could be ironed out if AMT would have Survived.
The future is looking bright for fans of the 10mm. I am pretty sure this round is going to make a come back. I originally got interested in this caliber mostly because of the insanely popular 1980's detective television show "Miami Vice" because the central character Sonny Crockett, played brilliantly by actor Don Johnson, used a CZ styled 10mm the Bren Ten which was the brain child of Jeff Cooper, the major proponent of the cartridge. When he connected with the bad guys got knocked down and they stayed down. Sadly later I think in the 3rd season the switched Sonny to a Smith 45 acp. The gorgeous black Ferrari was gone in the 3rd too...double bummer!
I love the 10mm favorite handgun caliber I'm thinking about adding a red dot to my Iver Johnson Eagle XL 10mm and going to try and sight it in for 75 to 100 yards
I bought the eagle in 45 right when over Johnson went back in business. It's been a great 1911. Paid $550 for it, which is great for all the options it has.
As always great video. I have a l.J. 5" Eagle in .45 acp and love it. Didn't know they made A .45 ported long slide , so thanks to you I just ordered one.

Great video, I love the idea of a premium 10mm 1911 that does not cost $1500+. I ended up buying a Glock 20 gen 4 and have been very happy so far with the improved recoil spring and much needed improvements to ergonomics. That is one beautiful pistol also! Handsome grips, nice finish, a piece that I would be proud to unholster at the range.
+Icarryone, interesting, need to keep that in mind for the future 10mm purchases. Is the increase accuracy due to a superior trigger, longer barrel, better sight arrangement?
+Icarryone, that much better? Well then, in your opinion would improving the trigger and sights help enoug to justify the price? I really get a lot out of your straight forward, honest, no crap videos, even if they sometimes indicate that I could have made a better decision. Thank you.
Did all that to my G20 - including installing a match grade Lone Wolf barrel but it just can't hang with this Iver Johnson. I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos. Thanks for your feedback.
Nice looking pistol. I wonder how much more velocity you'd get out of the 6 inch barrel, then again with it being ported it may not do much in increased velocity over a regular 5 inch barrel. The Rock Island double stack looks nice too and who can argue with 16+1. The best part about all of these New 10MM is more ammo is being made. I've been carrying an S&W 1006 since 1989, I love the gun it eats everything and is very comfortable in my hand. I usually carry only high end and high velocity rounds in it. the recoil is no different than a 1911, very easy to handle. The only down side is it's 9+1, so I have to carry more magazines.
The cool factor of long slide 1911's are pretty hard to ignore. Doesn't even matter what caliber their in. There is a aura of seriousness about them that gives the shooter confidence that shorter barreled pistols don't.
I always enjoy your videos. It is a pleasure to watch them. Thank you for sharing them. You have a lot of knowledge about the 1911. I always look forward to your videos.Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Iver Johnson was bought out a while back. The new owners have got the company up and running again - this time with all new computer controlled CNC machinery.
I’m looking for some Grips for my Ruger New Vaqueros, Cowboy Action Shooting rigs. I’d love some either similar to the grips on this 10mm or your MAC II 45ACP.
After your review of this pistol, I finally decided on this for my first 10mm. I really like those grips! Sorry to hear that you lost yours to your wife's Dan Wesson. 😆 The current eagle ones are very nice too though. Thanks for the reviews!
@@Icarryone Nicely played Sir, nicely played. I just ordered a set from eBay that I think are the same ones but look maybe a little darker. I've got my fingers crossed anyway. Thanks again!
Despite your comment about the use of "heavily-loaded", or "seriously-potent" 10mm rounds, the Iver Johnson site clearly warns that this model is "not for use with +P ammo or reloads". In fact, that's their admonition for all calibers. I think I would take their advice. Thanks for the video.
I do not advocate the use of +P ammunition in any 10mm. There are two classes of commercially loaded 10mm ammo available on the market. Some ammo brands are loaded to pressure levels less than the original industry standard. Norma class ammunition is loaded to the specifications originally developed for this cartridge - and are considered "heavily loaded" or "full power" ammunition. The term, "+P" indicates that a particular ammunition is loaded to pressure levels exceeding industry standards - and I don't advocate it's use either.
Really good review! Those grips make that gun pop!! That's a handsome gun you go there. I was surprised by the price, I thought that it might have been higher. I was thinking about getting a Glock 20 or 40 for a backcountry gun but I'm a bit worried about the recoil on the Glock. Any thoughts about the recoil?? Thanks!
Although I own Glocks, they are not my favorites. They are good at most things but not great at anything. For the most part, polymer guns are a bit lighter than all steel handguns. The draw back to this is recoil - especially with full power 10mm rounds. When it comes to the 10mm round I favor heavier pistols.
very nice price on this was thinking you were going to say it was a 1300 to 1500 dollar gun 800 is not bad at all for this gun considering its chambered in 10mm and a long slide and when it comes right down to it a remington R1 standard 1911 is 600 to 700 dollars another 100 bucks for a long slide 10mm super worth it
Yes, that would be interesting. Having the same barrel length, I would expect very similar velocity results. Seeing that 10mm factory ammo isn't exactly cheap, testing that wide range of bullet weights would certainly get expensive for the reviewer.
In another video will you be doing a take-down? It would be nice to know if it's a ramped and fully suported chamber, main spring weight, recoil spring weight and if it has any MIM parts. Thanks!
Excellent video have a question just got into handgun hunting 10mm is my choice so far I acquired a ria hc fs,springfield armory 4.5 osp, ruger redhawk 10mm 7.5, have the chance to obtain a long slide 10 my wife says last one my choice iver Johnson ported stainless or kimber target stainless what would you choose thank you for info
I just noticed the rechamper after a shot is incredibly slow? I've had mine for about a year and a half now maybe two. And I don't normally shoot it often. Only for defense, but I just cocked it to let it rechamper it and the slider moved waayyyy slow? Anyone know why this could be?
Curious if you have ran any stout , dangerous game rounds such as UNDERWOOD 10mm , 200 or 220 grain HARD CAST FLAT NOSE thru your Eagle XL ? That is my preferred ammo for Black Bear and not every handgun handles that round well .
Yes, I do shoot quite a bit of Underwood ammo. Mostly 180 grain - but I have tried the 200 grain rounds from Buffalo Bore and Underwood. Handles them both just fine.
It is very likely their stock is temporality depleted - just like most manufacturers. There has been a big upswing in firearms sales since the elections.
I want to get the eagle xl for my hip and a 3 inch for ankle! I'm thinking about making the 3 inch a 9mm instead to for recoil purposes. What's your opinion on this?
I had my mind made up on the RIA 10mm til I saw this upload. Are there any key differences you noticed other than barrel length? I would assume with more weight and the porting the Eagle XL would be a more smooth shooter.
Key differences? Not so much. I would have to give the accuracy edge to this Eagle XL due to its longer sight radius. Granted, it's also a little smoother shooting because of the porting.
As far as performance goes, they are equally matched. The Iver Johnson has a slight accuracy advantage due to it's longer sight radius. My RIA A2 has the advantage when it comes to round count. It all boils down to personal preference. Obviously, I like them both. (My actual hands down favorite is the Dan Wesson Razorback.)
+Icarryone I'm glad I scrolled down to see this comment, I was just about to ask the very same question. Great review as always!!! although because of size I personally would choose the Rock island hc over this because I find it more interesting. Do you have a review for the Razorback?
With all due respect, I like to point out that current Iver Johnson firearms are nothing related to old IJ in whatsoever aspects. Nowadays all IJ firearms are manufactured in Philippines by Shooters Arms Manufacturing, aka SAM.
Have you had any problems shooting high power loads like Underwood? People are telling me it is not supported because it doesn't have a ramp.I plan on using the Underwood extreme penetrater for hunting.
Yes, this 1911 has the exact same set-up as the Colt Delta Elite. I have ran some Underwood 180 grain rounds in it without any issues. For the most part I fire my own hand loaded ammo in it - which are pretty warm loads
Icarryone I just ran 150 rounds through mine, 100 of Sellior&Bellot no problems then o ran 50 of American Eagle wich kept jamming. Then I ran some UnderWood Extreme penetrator with no problem no bulges and it had less of a kick than the lighter loads.
This is not the Iver Johnson that started making guns in 1871. They went out of business in 1993. This is a company that just bought then name in 2006. The only thing this company has in common with the original company is the name.
I'm sure there are plenty of shooters who can do much better - but shooting offhand, I've managed to consistently hit 6" steel targets with it out to 50 yards.
Icarryone u prob get asked this all the time, with all your 10mm's which would u prefer as a hunting pistol? Im looking at the eagle xl, tanfoglio hunter and possibly investing in a dan wesson or kimber jagre. Last 2 are really a wish list but a possibility
Any of the 10mm's you mentioned are quite capable of taking medium sized game. The Tanfoglio Hunter and this Eagle XL do offer a little more sight radius. By the way, be sure to check your state's handgun hunting regulations. Some states require a handgun to have a barrel length of at least six inches to be considered legal for hunting.
10mm long slide 1911's are undoubtedly some of the most beautiful firearms ever to exist.
A long slide 1911 chambered in 45 ACP is very appealing too.

What I'd call "SUPER_SLICKNESS"....just GAWGEOUS!
It's a real shooter too.
Just bid on one @ gunbroker, if I can get it for home for 600 or 650 I'll bring it home.
Thats a good looking gun
Agreed.
Another great pistol 💪🏽😍
So far it appears to be. Shoots really nice.
Something 'weird' about IJ's slide serrations' angles; cut too steeply, it looks 'off'....
Yes, they're a bit canted - but they are grippy and work extremely well.
Also mags are hard to find I've noticed saldy
Fortunately, I'm well stocked with 10mm mags.
love your channel great reviews sub
Thanks and welcome aboard.
How does the iver johnson stack up against the new ruger sr911 10 mm?
Since I couldn't quite make up my mind, I decided to buy both. Either one would make an excellent addition to anyone's collection.
Thanks for the reply I really like your videos.
Great videos, loving all the 10mm!
Any plans on the next one? STi or SV INFINITY?
You never know. I did recently upload a review on the ATI ASR 10mm carbine. It's a great little companion carbine for 10mm handgun fans to consider.
2021 Iver Johnson is either out of business or going out of business. I visited their website and nothing is in stock. Real shame.
It is very likely their stock is temporality depleted - just like most manufacturers. There has been a big upswing in firearms sales since the elections.
this is beautiful.
Thank you.
Anyone that can provide a link o those wooden ivory grips? should would appreciate the help. Tom
I want to get the eagle xl for my hip and a 3 inch for ankle! I'm thinking about making the 3 inch a 9mm instead to for recoil purposes. What's your opinion on this?
A single stack compact 9mm would make an excellent back-up. Check out the Colt Defender in 9mm as a back-up option.
Iv looked at a lot of Iver Johnson Eagle XL 10mm. None of them have the porting.
What must I do to get one with the factory porting?
Thank you.
You could always have your local gun shop order one for you directly from Iver Johnson.
Icarryone Thank you. So its that easy. Boy....you know what I feel like right now......LoL.
Can you carry this or would it be too bulky?
Great for target shooting and hunting - but I personally prefer something a bit more compact for daily carry.
That is a beautiful gun - do you know if it is available with an ambidextrous safety?
No, not on this model.
ok, thanks for the response!
Would you choose a rock island/metro arms over an iver johnson?
I actually own all three but it would really come down to your personal preference. All are excellent shooters.
Where are you finding all the unique grips you put on your firearms?
All over the place really - local gun shops, internet, EBay etc.
Does this come without the ported bbl and slide?
Yes.
10mm, beautiful and reasonable. What more could you want?
How about one for each hand?
In fact I AM a believer in having 2 of your favorite gun.
I like the way you think.
I don't have the facilities to reload 10mm or I would be buying one. seems like a great alternative to 357 mag
The 10mm round certainly has a bit more striking power.
Go do it to the Dog Rocket. I am interested in a 10mm shooter and this one has a good name on it too.
Yes they do.
Your wife is a lot like me. I like to put some pretty custom grips on my favorite handguns. Those are quite lovely!! Who made them?
I'm not exactly sure who makes them but she found them on ebay.
Dan Eagle Pistol Grips. Found them on Amazon.
The gun looks great. Which one performs better, the RIA 10mm or the Iver Johnson? Which one would you prefer?
As far as performance goes, they are equally matched. The Iver Johnson has a slight accuracy advantage due to it's longer sight radius. My RIA A2 has the advantage when it comes to round count. It all boils down to personal preference. Obviously, I like them both. (My actual hands down favorite is the Dan Wesson Razorback.)
+Icarryone I'm glad I scrolled down to see this comment, I was just about to ask the very same question. Great review as always!!! although because of size I personally would choose the Rock island hc over this because I find it more interesting. Do you have a review for the Razorback?
I most certainly do!
Do you think the ported barrel model is worth the extra cost over the standard 6"?
Yeah, I do - but the standard model will likely appeal more to a wider range of shooters due to its price.
Out of your beautiful collection 10mm do you have favorite?
I suppose my personal favorite is my Dan Wesson Razorback - but this Iver Johnson is really growing on me.
With all due respect, I like to point out that current Iver Johnson firearms are nothing related to old IJ in whatsoever aspects. Nowadays all IJ firearms are manufactured in Philippines by Shooters Arms Manufacturing, aka SAM.
That's correct. Iver Johnson is under new ownership.
What do you like better the Eagle or the rock island?
Actually, I like them both.
I just purchased the non ported version, bit I am going to buy a barrel bushing compensator.
Interesting.
I don't need a compensator, this gun don't kick.
This is not the Iver Johnson that started making guns in 1871. They went out of business in 1993. This is a company that just bought then name in 2006. The only thing this company has in common with the original company is the name.
The same thing applies to Colt, Smith & Wesson, Marlin, Winchester and several other firearms manufactures.
Sure does including Springfield Armory.
Don't forget about Springfield Armory and Dan Wesson while you're at it.
is there alot of good reasons for switching from 45 to 10mm ? im just wondering
The primary reason would be that the 10mm has more striking energy than a .45acp.
Icarryone oh ok thanks for the help
What distances have you tested for accuracy?
I'm sure there are plenty of shooters who can do much better - but shooting offhand, I've managed to consistently hit 6" steel targets with it out to 50 yards.
Nice gun and nice price.
You're right!
Do u have a link for the grips?
Sorry, I sure don't - all I know is that my wife found these grips on EBay.
