Haven't been a regular here lately, but talking about Government, I have a question for SG.
@SG - I had this hunch when Sushil Modi was transferred to Delhi, that he'd be the new FM of India. Think just after the "Khar-maas", Jan 14th. Do you think it can happen?
My previous hunches have all been spot on! Would tell you later about them. BTW, emails to your Print mailbox are bouncing with mailer-demons.

I would simply like to point out one small correction. As someone for Chandigarh, Mr Gupta may be forgiven for thinking Chandigarh is the only planned city to have been built in modern India, that is not the case. The capital city of Odisha was also built as a planned city pretty much around the same period as Chandigarh itself. While Bhubaneswar may not have the sense of wonder or style that Corbusier gave Chandigarh, it none the less was a planned city.
Similarly, if one is to grant the same status to what was being planned in Amaravti, there have been similar more successful attempts in Naya Raipur and Gandhi Nagar. While Amaravati was probably more grander in thought and vision, the realities of Naya Raipur and Gandhi Nagar as planned "capital areas" near an existing major city deserve to be highlighted more than the khayali pulao of Amaravati.
Of course, I am not necessarily disagreeing with your basic point that our cities "suck", but only that there have been a few more attempts to suck less than you have mentioned

In terms of Nominal GDP growth rate , India was the fastest growing Major Economy from 2014-18 ..... U know why Nominal GROWTH RATE was high in MMS tenure dispite high INFLATION ?? Becoz that was not the REAL GDP GROWTH RATE ...... It was Nominal Growth rate which excludes Inflation .... Therefore in MMS 10 years , he was only able to add around 900 Billion $ in ECONOMY while in Modi 6 years tenure , it's around more than 1 trillion $ already .... There was a Slowdown in 2016 , but that didn't affected a lot till 2017-18 as growth was near 7-8% then also .... It was reduced to 5% growth in 2019 .... And now due to complete lockdown and already Slowdown , we faced -23.9% in April-June Quarter ..... Everything in this country becomes a debate - vaccine (produced by one very reputed and strong track record Indian firm although phase 3 results were definitely essential but the opposition instead of pointing its guns on the process, messed up by bringing nonsensical "BJP vaccine"), Rafales (essential for our depleting Air force. It does not matter that questions over Bofors were never answered), and now even Central vista (apparently the timing is wrong). The truth is these decisions were essential. In fact, many were pending from the time of UPA and they were accused of delay.

Dear Mr. Shekhar Gupta, I follow quite regularly your analysis of specific issues that I find educative and informative. In your presentation of Central vista project, how come you did not know or forgot that Bhubaneswar is a planned city and due to that it is rated as number one in smart city projects. Hope you will make good this lacuna in one of your future presentations. Please continue your wonderful work that comes in as a breath of fresh air in today's tv media standards. Thank you.

Mr.SG, I am glad that your unequivocally in favour of urban renewal of Indian cities. During my travel in north India, I have seen that north Indian cities are worse off as compared to south Indian cities, Delhi included. It is common to see tall buildings constructed on small plots, electrical wires dangling precariously over the public's head, not to speak of congestion, drainage problems. Unfortunately, the busybodies in the country interfere with everything be it a temple or a parliament building. They want to sit in judgment over every decision of the governments. The courts themselves have encouraged such people by encouraging petitions after petitions which do not come within the scope of either Article 32 or Article 136. Who can question the supreme court when it commits a legal wrong, except the supreme court itslef? I am glad that the SC has at last realised that they must not interfere with all the policy matters of the Government.
Personally, I find it deplorable that we are unable to give up our colonial past. Why should our parliament continue to function in a building constructed by our colonial masters? These projects should have been commenced soon after the independence. But, Nehru nurtured the view that India is a poor country and cannot waste money on these fanciful buildings. Being an Anglophile, he was loath to disturb the British landmarks. At last, we are shedding the colonial burdens.

Not every executive decision can be up for judicial review. If that is the case, abolish parliament, bureaucracy ministers and let supreme court run the country !!! Wrong decision by elected government should get rectified by electoral process not judicial activism. Every road/flyover/airport/railway line/factory and port is delayed due to court cases in an overloaded judiciary.

Again Mr Shekhar U are misplaced on judicial activism while accusing SC on acting upon BCCI & many past cases...while U are conveniently forgetting those past actions were under UPA & Cong rule where all actions are under suspicion due to corrupt legacy. 2nd U also deliberately one important point didn't mention on duo judgement that, all necessary approvals & clearances are just & complies.

Every time there is controversy around central vista project.. I come and watch this video... And get amazed.... All things very well explained... Unlike other journalist who inspite of having all the project related information already in public for quite some time... Ignore it and feed their viewers our non-sense politician's blabbering... In first 4 minutes.. SG already said... What's being demolished or what not.. but media and politician keep creating confusion..

That's a very polished way of supporting the judgment. Please don't forget Constitution of India preamble speaks about economic justice therefore Courts are well within their boundaries to question the economic discretion of government because the public exchequer is at the end of the day taxpayers money and if this trend is normalized then a majoritarian government and especially in a first past the post system where 31% votebank can jeopardize the interests of remaining 69%. Therefore public criticism of the project is absolutely justified.

As an advocate for once ive to applaud thus episode especially where it adresses the judicial activism which has ruined the governance of this nation for over 2 decades when weak coalitions presided at the helm. Judiciary need to pull its socks and demand more courts n judges n quick appointments across the countey to cut litigation time n poor litigants money
