This game was so well done. Everyone who worked on it had to feel proud back then. It really felt like a lot of love was put in to this one. Godtier music, sprite work, level design, shield power ups, story for a Sonic game.
I think their only regret is that Sega wasn't willing to wait another half a year so they had to awkwardly release the first half and then the second half later.

First off (explained in sonic adventure 2 and other titles I'm sure) the master emerald can neutralize the power of the Chaos Emeralds, making a single one more powerful than even all 7 chaos emeralds. Knuckles's exposure to the Master Emerald on a regular basis mightve contributed to him being able to stop super sonic... (Thats just a theory though... another one might be that knuckles had the master emerald on him when he first encountered sonic since eggman doesnt actually STEAL it till Sonic and Knuckles if I'm not mistaken.) Second, there's also the fact that Sonic, being a protagonist, had no idea who he knuckles was at the time and was more than likely also trying to keep from hurting him, since he didnt have a reason to until knuckles started snatching the emeralds sonic had dropped and he'd run off with them. There's also the fact that Eggman (Or Ivo Robotnik until Sonic Adventure... in America, before those people come and start yelling at me for getting his name "wrong" )is capable of creating devices to neutralize Super Sonic's, and in turn, the chaos emerald's abilities on the off chance he can catch him, like he did in Unleashed... he mightve given Knuckles a more compact device that generally did the same thing to him in 3 at a much faster rate. Also take into account the manual's backstory. Knuckles is the guardian of floating island's chaos emeralds along with it's master emeralds and later he demonstrates that he has knowledge of their properties along with the properties of the master emerald. He probably knew of a way to neutralize the chaos emeralds without the power of the master emerald. I also have a theory about there being more than one set of chaos emeralds... ones native to angel island and the ones Robotnik and Sonic typically are seen duking it out over... see it specifies that Knuckles is guardian of ANGEL ISLAND's chaos emeralds specifically. It also goes on to say that Eggman tricks knuckles into thinking that sonic and tails are trying to steal them. But wait...sonic already has a set of 7 even before he reaches the island, so they cant be angel islands chaos emeralds, could they? Knuckles, being the gullible hothead that he is depicted to be in later games, Its safe to assume he doesn't bother checking for the emeralds back in hidden palace (Sonic and Knuckles) and instead goes directly after Sonic and Tails to get their emeralds since theyre pretty much identical aside form of course their size. (But then again in all sonic games except for more more modern titles the size of the chaos emeralds has varied on a case by case basis anyway... by comparison, Angel Island's real chaos emeralds are the size of SA2's Master Emerald and the master emerald is EVEN BIGGER than those proportionally... I dont know.) Anyway Knuckles figures out sonic has 7 chaos emeralds... they look identical to his so he assumes theyre his and snatches them after neutralizing Super Sonic. These could be seen as a bit of a stretch but theyre mostly theories and possible answers to the question of why knuckles was powerful enough to stop Super Sonic. (There's also the fact that we've never seen knuckles actually go up against super sonic, too.)
If you listen to this with headphones, 0:28 try this part with the left headphone and the right headphone, one at a time. Trust me, It'll be legendary.
It's just amazing how SEGA and Sonic Team managed to make Sonic a star in the game industry. Sonic 1 was ok, a good debut to the series, but it wasn't better than Super Mario World. Sonic 2 was the real masterpiece, where the inspiration and development in both level design and music were excelent, truly an instant classic. But what i'm thinking is, from where they took the inspiration and creativity to make Sonic 3 & Knuckles? it's just mindblowing how good and fresh this game feels. Sonic 3 & Knuckles really proved to be the real and most exciting game in the series, i love it. I wish SEGA had a revival to this kind of music and games, like Sonic Mania.
@@brindavison6466 Correct, also I love the 8-bit Sonic games, So yes slower pace does not really bother me as long as it feels intentional, Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis on GBA sucks bad though I don't really like it at all.
If you have a computer or at least laptop, you can download a sega emulator + this game (there must be a .bin file or some kind of disk) and then play it ;) hope this was somehow useful
The whole ost sounds so much better than 16 bit! I’m not sure if that’s because of how good the tracks are or what, but every single one is the most nostalgic relic in history.
This track will forever be for me, the reason that Sonic 3 holds pride of place in my Nostalgic heart for the Sonic series as a whole. Exploring the lush vibrant greenery of AI before it gets set ablaze, and then the uptempo on track 2, is simply awesome and will never, for me, be topped.
I don't know what it is about Genesis Synthesis, but man it's so playful and delightful to the ears. Angel Island never sounded so fun until I really heard it in detail just now.
i love how different instruments are in different parts of the ears sometimes. I have don't usually play this game with headphones, and even when i do the music isn't the focus being drowned out by the sfx. but its a neat touch

Like the File Select theme, I believe Setsumaru composed and arranged this track because of its Latino vibes. Evidently, years later, in "Yoshi's Topsy Turvy," Setsumaru worked on its soundtrack and wrote a piece that heavily resembles Angel Island Act 1.
I never thought about it, he might have composed Angel Island Zone, but something still tells me that Sawada-San might be related to Angel Island Zone (although he mentioned that he only did the title screen and some jingles), or maybe Masafumi Ogata may also be associated with Angel Island (I doubt it because it doesn't fit his style)
Fun Fact About This Sound Track. It Was Supposed To Played By Guitars, Bongos & Trumpets Which Was Supposed To Be In The Final Version Of The Soundtrack. However It Was Changed To Make It More Appropriate For Angel Island Zone. But You Can Barely Here The Guitars Playing In The Soundtrack.
Ok context I played sonic 1 for a half a year when I was 5-6 and I played mania when it came out so all I heard of this song was the beginning and now I can’t unheard the cutoff
Flash back. I'm 3 years old, brain just starting to really turn on for real for real. I'm at my babysitters house, her older kid is like 8, I think. He decides to bust out his GameCube and let me play sonic. The one I picked was sonic 3. I had played video games before that, my dad started me real young on that lmao, but this is probably the first one I actually have memory of playing. This song, this intro, some how, I can recall just a flash of that room, even though it was 19 years ago. Sonic 3 will always be my favorite game in the franchise. It has the tightest gameplay, and most varied levels out of any of the 2d sonics (yeah, I said it. Get mad sonic cd fan boys), some of the best music in the franchise, and is (imo) the zenith of the original 16 bit style, even more so than sonic mania. Not to disparage sonic mania's visuals in any way, but I belive that the retro style works best when it is caused by limitations of hardware as opposed to aesthetic choice. Not to say it can't work well as an aesthetic choice, honestly.
