This is a beginners guide to pointing and I cover the following:
✅ The tools and materials required.
✅ The ratio of sand and cement required.
✅ How to make 'bucket mix' of mortar for this job.
✅ Cleaning out the joints in the paving stones.
✅ How to force the mortar into the joint.
✅ Finishing the joint with a home made finishing tool.

Chris,Thanks for this video. After watching this you gave me enough confidense to dig out the terrible black and mouldy grout on an Indian sandstone patio and start from scratch ,thereby undoing the work from my installers.
It took me 4 days to complete the job but it came out really well. The flexible bucket is a wonderful thing. Thanks

This video gives me confidence to tackle this job. Only thing I will do differently is rake all the weeds and soil out before I make the mix, but only on a dry day.

@@lauralaura2504 hi Laura, it's still perfect 👌. I suppose the best way to find out is to power wash the patio, which i need to do, but at this point it still looks awesome. We had a lot of rain in North Wales this past year, so i am really pleased with the job.
Good consistency. I always use a drier mix that will still pack too. Too wet and it will stain the stone/brick. Very well done.

Man this pointing at pavement stones is easy
For joints that tight, I would reccomend using polymetric sand, has worked well on my patio for years.
Brilliant thank you! If I hadn't watched this, I'd have mixed too wet and made a terrif mess. Again....
It’s 2018 and I just redid a slate porch using these tips and wow- looks great. I didn’t know about that leveling tool and it made a huge difference. Thanks for the video.

Nice video Chris - my only concern is the 4 to 1 mix. This is what I think roofers mix when pointing ridge tiles and it only lasts a few years before it starts to crumble, I would prefer to use a stronger mix - would there be any drawbacks in doing this?

Chris cheers for the video. I'm doing crazy paving ... Do you or anybody else here know if I'd use the same mix or do I need something different. A few of my gaps are a lot bigger than those ones
HI Chris, Found your video really helpful as i had already done some a week or so previous, and i did put too much water with it and its all on the edge of the flags.. But thanks to you uploading a great and easy video to follow i have now managed to finish the rest off without any getting on the edges.. :-)

Very helpful video Chris. One thing I have heard is that adding some Pva to the water will make the joint even stronger. What are your thoughts on this?
