  • We visited Natural Batik Village in Kuantan and painted our own Batik, it's a fun thing to do if you have time to spare in Kuantan.
    What is Batik?
Batik is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to a cloth and it's made either by drawing dots and lines with a spouted tool called a chanting, or by printing/stamping with a copper stamp called a hand block.

The different is batik from Malaysia is more flora and fauna theme. And Indonesia is more animal theme. Malaysia batik is different from Indonesia batik. Malaysia batik mostly are floral motif, Indonesia batik are animal & human motifs. Batik is from South East Asia, especially Southern Thai, Malaysia and Indonesia which hundreds years ago are not seperated by borders and called Nusantara. Malaysia didn't claimed batik is solely ours, but we promoted batik as part of our culture in visit Malaysia ads and it was misunderstood and not well received by our neighbor. Pity our neighbor they didn't understand about culture.

Batik technique is not either from Indonesia nor Malaysia. Not even from South East Asia. The term batik is yes comes from the word Java/Malay but not the technique. Batik is a form of wax resist dyeing technique, where the oldest batik (4th century BC) was found in Egypt to wrap mummies. Many countries in the world have their own batik version, from Japan, China, Asean, Arabs till Africa. But with their own language name. Even in Malaysian batik history, it is said that some Malays used to import batik from India back then. It is an ancient art techniques, the same thing like ‘songket’ which is part of the brocade family. Malaysian/Indonesian can’t claim that songket is ORIGINATED from the country because China, Japan, Greece, France, India, Persian, etc have their own brocade too. That’s the importance of history. But it is good that both Malaysia and Indonesia are some of the only remaining countries that still preserve and use those ancient wax resist dyeing and brocade techniques.

7:23 Batik Indonesia and Malaysia so different. What recognized in UNESCO is Indonesia Batik which mean from Indonesia only Batik Indonesia. Batik Malaysia is from Malaysia.Thailand also got Batik called Batik Thailand same goes to Philippines. We (Malaysia, Indonesia Philippines Thailand Brunei Singapore) shared the same culture because we from same root before separate to our own country name now. We did not want to claim in UNESCO because we know culture is own by ethnic not country. But we only can say Yes Batik Malaysia is from Malaysia.

    1. Batik originates from Nusantara, which basically includes Malaysia and Indonesia. While both countries are known for it, but both countries use and employ different design motives and techniques. So hopefully you guys can help to promote this fact to other people especially those who are still debating on the true origin of batik. The tie-dye batik is more of a modern and convenient way of showing batik design on a shirt, no need to 'canting' around with the wax pen.
    2. Yes, the girl at the pasar malam probably just following orders due to rising cases of COVID-19 and didn't know how to react properly. But in hindsight, I think it's stupid to enforce such thing.

Let me try to add a possible explanation, we used to have higher covid cases among foreign workers, because of covid spread in crowded worker hostels, so for example in crowded places like the mosque foreigners were not allowed for some time.. now cases are coming back so possibly the market organizer decided that foreign workers pose a risk.. there is also some cases among illegal immigrants.. so the directive is only Malaysians allowed in the market.. so unfortunately tourist s got caught in the situation.. my two cents

Malaysia never claim batik is ours or originated from malaysia. It was just we tried to promote batik internationally and made known that we also have special batik which is called batik malaysia. Batik malaysia is a batik lukis with the motive usually big and normallly image of flora and fauna which is acceotable in islam and malay culture. It was misinterpret by the indonesia and saying we are claiming batik. That have made them to register to the UN to establish that batik is originatwd from indonesia ans they did get the recognation as the batik tekap originator. So kudos to them. For us, the matter is just nonsense and no one should claim batik as it is worldwide art from china, india, europe, africa, america all have their own batik. The different is the representation of motives, way how it makes, and the gods used. So no one should ever have claim it. Batik malaysia is popularize by the late wife of our former PM wife and to market it internationally. But it was triggered wrongly by some of indonesian media with bad intention.

There is absolutely no reason for the two of you to be denied entry into the market. A market is an open space for all. You should complain to the Tourism Department of Kuantan! The top up is easier as you just need to look for the Touch N Go top up available sign in any shop.
