The reporter is doing the reasonable thing here, actually challenging them to try and clarify what they are trying to say. The problem is just with how short the segment is, really, it's hard to summarize stuff like that quickly. It really is true that DEVO is often very ambiguous when it comes to actually saying what they mean. Especially in this early 80s era where the band is still very active and "in character", before Jerry became that one guy willing to do personal interviews for indie radio and random podcasts.
The moral of the story, kids: Devo will be admired and enjoyed for generations to come and this condescending host was never heard from again. When dummies question genius it never ends well.
