in '55. Elvis exploded in 1956 & was crowned the king but Elvis never took his title seriously.
So if Elvis really thought Chuck Berry was the king we should respect it.

It gets quite irritating as a long term Presley fan hearing what he liked, what he did, what women he preferred, what musicians he rated etc. but nothing from the guy himself other than he thought his music was a combination of R&B, Country and Gospel and that Fats Domino was the real King of Rock 'n Roll which may have been said at an event Fats was at and may have been just showing respect. In the UK we first heard him in 1956 on Heartbreak Hotel, Blue Suede Shoes and amongst others Hound Dog and that was the real launch pad for Rock 'n Roll.

  • @CorderBob

Like John Lennon said about Elvis.... "Before Elvis, there was nothing." Why? Because Elvis was the one who laid the groundwork for a new sound in music which became known as "Rock and Roll." Elvis had 4 records out (which fused country, blues, and gospel in an up-tempo style) on the SUN label before Berry's recording of "Maybellene" came on the market! And THAT is why he is considered by most people in the world as the "King of Rock 'n' Roll." Elvis liked to uplift other stars by giving out accolades (he also once said that Fats Domino was the "King of Rock 'n' Roll"), So, there you have it! :)

---------------Actually, re-assigning this title (King) is just another modern attempt at
re-writing history to be PC and take away Elvis' accomplishments:
First, it's the public & press who decided this "king" title, not Elvis, nor anyone else. Unlike MJackson;'s agent who insisted he be called the King of Pop when granting appearances, commercials, etc (despite ELvis having more Pop hits than MJ), it was the globe that started calling Elvis King, not an invention of his agent or his own ego.
Also, soooo many artists have tried to claim this title, (Chuck, Jerry Lee, Fats Domino, Little Richard...) and a few fans even called Bill Hailey king for a while, but it simply wouldn't stick when you put him (or the others) side-by-side next to Elvis. In Little Richard's case, it was decided this King title wasn't working, so his organization started calling him "architect of rock & roll" which Lil Richard could not even pronounce. In Chucks case, King didn't stick either, so it was decided to call him Father of Rock & Roll, which isn't correct, as it was a cumulative contribution of Country and Blues artists since American Music began that morphed by the mid 1950s & solidified by all those named.
Listening to Little Richard or Fats music from the 40s is entirely different than it was by mid 50s, and this is the mistake most people make in thinking since these blues artists began their career in the 40s their music was rock & roll at that point. I'd say a few artists accidentaly stumbled upon rock & roll even as early as the 40s but not with any regularity, and they didn't stick to that sound. Lots of folks list Sister Tharpe as "Godmother of Rock" but listen to her early music in the 30s & 40s it sounds nothing like rock & roll. I'd say a few Country artists sounded more so, than she did in that period. Again, folks point to her youtube video clips as evidence, but these are from 1965, long after Rock & Roll (and Elvis) became mainstream. So Elvis influenced his contemporaries, and their sound changed by the time Elvis rolled out.
We could also try to define the term KING, but it could mean so many things, who is most popular, who is handsomest, who had the most hits, most sales, movies, who had the first hit, etc etc etc. The term doens't really mean anything. But this much we know, Elvis has always been universally /Globally recognized as 'the king.'
Comparing the two, chronologically, Elvis (1954) recorded rock before Chuck (1955). Looking at Chuck's music, he did not exactly have a ton of charting music over his career, not even on his own R&B charts. He certainly had enough to put together a greatest hits album, but not much more.
Even after American music charts (Billboard Pop Chart) was wide open to everyone by the mid/late 1950s, and we heard an avalanche of minority artists charting & being played on the radio & TV. Yet chuck wasn't able to muster the same popularity, sales, and chart positions the way Elvis did. I agree with BBKing's comment that Elvis was so hot, everything he did was a hit, he had the whole package, he could sing, dance, play guitar, voice for all kinds of music, and the girls loved him.
Also, Chuck (similar to Little Richard) simply could not "sing" ballads very well. Listen to Elvis do It's Now Or Never, Love me Tender, or Surrender; then listen to Chuck or Little Richard do any of their slow songs, and it becomes very clear who was most versatile.
Point being, unlike other artists, Elvis was not bound to one genre. I know the recent bio-pic tried to paint him as "just a blues copycat," but truth is, Elvis dabbled his entire life in many genres: Country, Bluegrass, Gospel (white & black), Operatic Ballads, Pop, Rock, Internation Music, Adult Contemporary, in addition to R&B. At his peak, he charted instantaneously on R&B, Pop, and Country Charts with #1 songs, like Jailhouse Rock, Chuck could never accomplish this, nor the Beatles.
Ok, Chuck did write his own songs, and that's a gift he had that Elvis didn't, but that's it. In all other categories, Elvis cleans up. Elvis had so many other overwhelming aspects to his artistry, that songwriting was never a consideration. Even Tom Jones, Sinatra, Tony Bennette, etc didn't write their own hits.
Looking at the early 60's, Chuck was winding down with popularity. Then by mid 1960s, he wasn't having any hits, not just because of the Brit Invasion, as he started to dwindle before that. During this period, despite the Brit Invasion, Elvis did 20-something movies, soundtracks, and the lousy music the Movie Studios gave Elvis to record, still sold in the millions. For the entire decade of the 1960's, Elvis was the #2 artist, despite being trapped in movie contracts for 10 years and the aforementioned British Invasion.
Elvis has the most # of weeks on the charts, airplay, gold/platinum/multi platinum, most top 10, top 40, and until recently, most #1 songs for solo artist, and today is still the #1 selling artist of all time (all parameters combined). There simply is no comparison from a statistical standpoint.
Elvis, not Chuck, was the one who blending music genres (white & black) into his own unique version of rock & roll, and thereby DE-segregated our music. Elvis fought the press & public opinion about rock music. No one else did so much to popularize rock & roll, as well as present this form of music to the public as Elvis did.
Finally, Elvis is not here to validate this "recollection,' of Tom Jones. He also would never claim for himself any title, Elvis was too humble. But even if he Tom's memory is correct, Chuck Berry is no Elvis Presley. Elvis' stats speak for themselves.

Depends on race, Chuck Berry was Elvis's inspiration to create his sound, Little Richard, BB King, and Hank Williams Sr. (Hey Good Lookin) were also backdrops for the Greatest White Ear that could bring it all together. Mama Thorntons (Hound Dog was Blues ) look what Elvis turned it into. Heartbreak Hotel is another changed song. Elvis was King of Rock and Roll because he had a natural Tempo that would Rock anything he put his Voice to.

I remember listening to Radio Capital in London years ago and the singer LULU was interviewing an American singer named George Thursday. George came out with a lyric and I quote " I should've gone out last thursday but I stayed home instead with my brother Johnny Walker and his brother Black and Red. Lulu gasped that's brilliant. Why don't you write more songs like that? George replied BECAUSE CHUCK BERRY has written them all. People say ELVIS is KING. but without Chuck there would be no ROCK "N" ROLL.

Let's leave that controversy buried with the current compromise: Elvis is the King of Rock 'n' Roll, Chuck Berry is the Father of Rock 'n' Roll (I can't remember if it was Charles Berry 2 or 3 who thought that up, but it's perfect--I know Chuck considered Elvis the King!)

well i wasn't there to agree or disagree with this meeting with tom jones but my first impression is alot of this is made up not to say that Elvis didn't have a high respect for Chuck berry , and chuck influenced Elvis in many ways. also Elvis and Tom jones were very close but the story i heard it was Elvis and sammy davis jr. who went to see chuck and Elvis yelling out songs to sing, in an article that also said Chuck stated that he heard Elvis doing that. Beside there audios where Fats Domino was in the audiance when Elvis was performing and Elvis introduced Fats and stated here is the true king of rock and roll. who i also agree Fats had rock and roll hits before chuck or Elvis hit it big

I saw both Elvis and Tom Jones in concert. Tom was not nothing, and he generated sex appeal with his moves, but Elvis simply had the electricity and sensuality that rolled off of him with his hardly recognizing it himself. Both concerts were extremely enjoyable. One was more memorable than the other. I'll never forget Elvis.
