Bangkok's WORST PROBLEM!!

  • Today, I address my biggest annoyance about living in Bangkok. If you have been here recently, there are stretches of Sukhumvit Road that were almost unbearable to walk down, especially at night. The great news is, there has been a lot done about this and now it is a much more enjoyable experience to walk down the street as a tourist or an expat living here. Tonight, I visit the nightlife hotspots to see how things really are, I check out Nana, home of Nana Plaza and walk down Sukhumvit road towards Soi Cowboy to give the latest!

I was there in December 2023 and it was definitely noticeable then and could sometimes be intimidating. Individuals trying to sell stuff is one thing, but there were groups of 8 to 10 of these guys who would pick a spot where the BTS stairway would make the path narrow, they would form two lines which forced people to walk between their lines and they would stare at you as you walked past. Very glad they are gone.

Could I ask you a question? Do American tourists have a bad reputation in Thailand? Apparently we are not liked around the world (Europe in particular), but I get the impression that maybe in Thailand we don't make the top 2 or 3 spots of undesirables lol. Thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am planning a multi-month Southeast Asia trip and I was hoping to spend most of my time in Thailand. As a nice person I think I can overcome any stigmas either way. :)

@@ascendant95 as a Thai American dual citizen, I would absolutely say no that Americans have a bad reputation in Thailand. From what I learned is that they Thais wouldn’t know the difference if you are American or not. I know that Thai people have this mind set of something like “don’t worry, never mind, up to you, whatever you like”. Thailand has different kind of people or different class of people. You are going to find very proper and very nice Thais with good manners usually in hospitals or who are wealthy. Thais that are busy working like street food vendors are focused on working and may not seem so overly friendly and proper. The tuk tuk drivers may be a little pushy and constantly ask because they are trying to fish for money. Use the trains though, very cheap. Taxi always ask if they use the meter, you are going to get a few taxi drivers who want to negotiate the price in some areas where it could be hard to find a taxi but that’s ok if you feel good about it. In all I think thai people like to have fun and are safe people. In America my truck has been busted out twice just because I left things in there for them to grab. I would still be protective of your belongings like putting your wallet in your front pocket rather than back pocket especially in some sukhumvit areas. There is a mix of people there. But I had so much fun in nana plaza and memorable experience. Not an every day thing though. Yeah I had to pay high drink fees for the workers but I didn’t care and they had a good time and I had a good time.

@@ascendant95 you’re welcome. I’ve been to all those countries and I may be biased but something about it that makes me always want to return Thailand. I did the other countries and 1 time was enough. Maybe Vietnam I would go back but I kind of got bored in the other 2 countries and you think things would be cheaper there but a lot of things were pricey and more expensive than Thailand. Been coming to Bangkok since 2002. Honestly those guys on Sukhumvit are not the not what I expected you to say since they are a super minor annoyance. 99.99% of the time you can just ignore them and consider them like background noise of Bangkok traffic. Honestly had more issues with ignoring ladyboys and them grabbing me and lot letting go especially when I was 10 years younger. Hung out with bloke one time that had the physical inability to ignore the Tuktuk drivers that tried to show them girly show picture that he can be driven to. No eye contact or acknowledgement for anyone on the street but the food stall workers is the simplest fix.

    1) Drunk tourists
    2) old dudes with younger women...
    3) the influx of wannabe TH-camrs, who think they are Stanley Kubrick, I was in Thonglor the other night and the guy comes in with his hand held thing, goes out, comes in goes out, then he sits down and has the audacity to ask a few of us to be quiet as he is trying to film something for TH-cam, I suggested that unless he wanted to film the admittance procedure at Bangkok Hospital he best be leaving. TH-camrs like yourself do a great job, you don't bother anyone and you make mostly interesting videos. but their is a lot out there that are simply douchebags, they hog the sidewalk like they own it, they are just complete morons, watched one on soi 23 on his go pro walking backwards hit by a car a few weeks ago, then he yelled at the driver..didn't end well for him

I said 'Yeah, thats what I meant' (Nigerians often call their country 'Naija' but you have to pronounce it in a specific way otherwise it sounds like you're saying 'Niger'). So I then asked him 'So are you Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa...?'. This completely threw him off and he sheepishly replied 'I am from the Igbo people' and then excused himself at the intersection and left me to wander by myself. I know Project Bangkok did a similar video last year. I was expecting the streets to be cleaned up but this NYE period was the worst I have ever seen it. We know who owns the street of BKK.

That's awesome to hear. I did not enjoy my visit to Bangkok, at all. I stand out I guess because I'm American, but it was OD ANNOYING! "Yo Bro, Yo Bro, YO BRO", non-stop. I was over it within the first 4 minutes of being on the sidewalk.

My wife and I were there March 2023 and was staying around the Asok BTS area. They didn't approach us, but they did a whole bunch of people walking in front of us. Maybe because we were a bit older or maybe we just looked poor. My wife was wondering if the Thai police was on it since these people were doing it in the open and no one seems to care about it. Also seen freelancers that are definitely not Thai. Wonder what kind of special visa those girls are on.

The weather is cool and the wind is blowing just right. and the view is very beautiful You can go buy drinks at Foodland from downstairs and drink liquor, wine, and beer.

Police most properly were taking a cut of the profits, had heard that people buying within minutes of walking away from sellers were arrested, fined, and the drugs returned to sellers to do again, both parties happy apart from the buyer.
