I was just about to mention needing to add fabric softener, but then saw all the comments below saying the same so… good job trying something new! It may not have worked this time, but now that you have a little experience, try it again! I’m sure you’ll have a better, more satisfying result!
I was alternating between thinking, “are they crazy?!! and wondering how it would turn out. I gave you guys thumbs up because of your honesty and for keeping it real. Integrity counts in the long run! Also your bloopers ending had me laughing on an otherwise crappy day. Thanks for all your great content!!
I’ve done this project! Lone Fox has an excellent video using equal parts paint and fabric softener. My chair was soft and smelled awesome. Please try again and I would love for you to see how easy it is!!
I’ve never tried this, but I just watched a video with Anne Sloane. It was on another’s channel and she basically did a tutorial. Unfortunately, you made a few of what she called mistakes. She used a brush to lightly wet the fabric first, as you only want the surface wet. Then instead of mixing water, and paint she wet the brush first, then dipped it in paint, and sort of mixed it by working the brush on the up side of a roller pan. She said crispy is mostly due to overpainting, using more than 2 coats. She also said, you need to consider how the color of the original fabric may affect the color your applying, which I took as a message about expectations. She suggested that if it’s crunchy, a light sanding, then an application of wax, can give a soft hand and leather look to the finished product.
I’ve watched a few of these painted fabric videos and they’ve said adding fabric softener to the paint is the way to go. It does look really nice, too bad it didn’t feel nice.
I painted a sofa years ago with chalk paint. I sanded between each coat and sealed it with Annie Sloan wax. It’s not crusty and looks and feels like leather. It’s used daily and still looks good to this day. Hope this helps in case you’d like to try this process again. Oh, and I love your channel x
I too was wondering why she didn’t use AS method. Every video of a successful project involved sanding and wax. Like that she showed how long it actually takes and the energy to complete.
I’ve painted lots of upholstery many times. Vinyl, poly silky fabrics (like most dining seats) work well. But you need to seal it with LOTS of wax to get a leather feel. Don’t try boucle, or linen type fabric it holds too much paint and becomes too hard. But what I discovered is the best way to cover an ugly upholstered chair. Spray can adhesive, hot glue and faux fur. It is ridiculously easy and fun. If the faux fur has to have long fur it covers all the seams. I presently have a window seat bench and a living room chair that I covered by cutting up a faux fur bedding. Looks great, cats love it and it hides pet hair!
I actually used a spray paint specifically for fabric on a similar club chair and it came out fantastic! I used a navy blue to cover a cornflower blue that had faded. No one believed me when I told them it had been spray painted. It was not crunchy or stiff afterward and I had it in a high end Cape Cod rental with no complaints. Rustoleum and Krylon make a fabric spray paint. I think the brand I used was called Simply Spray (?).
Used that and it took sooooo many cans of that paint and then I had splotchy cushions after they sat on the porch awhile. Didn't love the spray product.
Such a cute couple, and you sure brought back memories. In 1961 we purchased a beautiful dark brown sofa. The first night we had it, I sat down upon the lovely sofa....spilled a bottle of white shoe polish while polishing my baby's shoes! We had NEVER heard of painting soft furniture but decided it would be better than trashing the piece. Did I not mention it was a very nubby textured fabric? The sofa was given away to a family that seemed to be thrilled with it!!
Oh, Andrea, I feel for you guys. I had watched a few videos where this technique was used, and I decided early into the video that I will never try it. What's worse, get this, one of the videos was done by Annie Sloan on an antique chair. She was a guest and did the hostess's chair. It was a gorgeous chair and my heart was breaking with every stroke of the brush, as I watched. Annie declared the project a success and the hostess agreed with her. I imagine out of courtesy. Thank you for posting this video and I hope anyone who is considering doing such thing, will watch your video first.
This took me down memory lane...I had a very similar experience a few years ago with a beautiful child's armchair. Disaster. Waste of time. Finish was as hard as the road despite sanding etc etc and what I really learnt was "don't do that again.. ever". Thanks so much for your videos and sharing all your amazing projects and ideas. Super talented! and really relatable 😊
I have painted a few chairs that were successful. I used a 50/50 mix of chalk paint and mineral spirits. Kept the fabric wet, sanded between each coat. Applied 3 coats. After the coverage, I put two waxed coats over the paint. It felt like leather! Smooth and comfortable. The fabric was a thin upholstery fabric. I did rewax every 6 months. I used the chairs for 2 yrs. I did need to reapply paint on the seat once during that time. It is definitely not along term solution.
Thank you for making the decision to post this video after all - it is so helpful to see the process and to know that even brilliant DIYers like you guys also face DIY challenges! And it was top quality as usual with the editing, the outtakes, and the general good vibes! Love from Germany!
Been home sick and so stir crazy. Came across your channel. It’s so cozy and fun. I cheer. Laugh. Awesome ideas. Inspiring. Might have cried with your friend’s incredible remodel: kitchen and living room omg. Every video is like “Binging with Besties.” Was up all night w covid cough- didn’t feel as bad while watching. Thank you so much. 🥰
Annie Sloan puts out a good video worth watching in case you ever think you might want to tackle a project like this again. All new ventures are trial and error good for your guys for posting even thought its was a failure. It was a beautiful color.
I’m happy I guys did this, I’ve tried every kind I’ve found on TH-cam, I wasted paint and 6 pillows to test them out first!! Thank goodness I didn’t do the chairs💞thank you for sharing guys!! 18:12
So glad you went ahead and posted this - if anyone could have made this work - it would have been you! This confirms for me - an upholstered piece needs to be reupholstered. (Or, slip covered.) Thank you! 💯👍
I love how goofy you are in the outtakes at the end. It seems like you really enjoy each other's company and you aren't trying to be super cool. I love your skills and your fabulous taste in projects.
THANK YOU!! For sharing this fail, I have always thought painted furniture could never feel like fabric and worry about mold and such, good lessons learned and shared , cheers!
I've watched several videos on painting upholstery and many of them use fabric softener (a couple tablespoons) in the paint and waxing it after its completely dry. This helps to keep the fabric soft and often makes the fabric look like leather
Well this has inspired a lot of comments! Thanks for posting your whole experience. What I don't see anyone mentioning is that in my experience it matters what color the original fabric was. If you want to thin it and use it like a dye (so it doesn't stiffen the fabric) you need a color that would create the final color you want just like a dye. In the video that several people mentioned where Debi Beard paints a velvet couch, she had a yellow couch and painted it with bohemian blue (deep teal blue) and ended up with something like a bottle green color. So taking your chair from red to green (opposites on the color wheel) is almost impossible with a dying technique. Each time the paint soaked in your red just kept popping through! I'm sure it was maddening. I had an aqua couch and painted it a dark gray and it took a couple of coats. But when I tried deep gray on a red velvet chair it just looked like a muted purple. So I quit and put it in my purple guest room LOL! I hear everyone saying to wax at the end but it seems like it would just attract dirt and get filthy so I've never done that last step. I agree no painted project will ever be as perfect as reupholstering! Cheers and happy holidays!
Haha it has! And I totally agree with you, I am scratching my head at the people asking why I didn’t use a dye, because clearly it needs something quite solid to cover up the red! I did try the wax in a spot but if still didn’t feel like fabric to me and I had the same thought as you. Others suggested fabric softener, but it seems it still turns out feeling like leather, which is great if that’s what you’re going for but not so great if you want a nice soft fabric haha.
Thank you for this video. I was thinking of doing our patio furniture next spring. I will just buy covers for the cushions. I'm so glad you posted this. I have been researching it but to get the "real truth" is so helpful! I just love watching your videos.
Thank you for this video!! Your fail ..not a true fail by you .. was so informative! Plus I love your design and all your DYI!! You have given me so much inspiration!! Thank you !!
I couldn’t agree more! I painted a large cotton weave ottoman using Dixie Belle paint. I used boss first then full strength paint super wet fabric and brush. Still took 31/2 coats with sanding in between. I wanted a leather look, so I waxed after dry . It looked good just like your chair did and felt like soft leather, but it cracked on the edges within a week of mild use. The painting technique you employ to buff the paint in is strenuous ! I decided it wasn’t worth the time, effort and paint. never did the second ottoman and my fabric painting days are over. Thanks for the memories:) your videos are great
I painted a fabric chair with fusion mineral paint and when I had full coverage I "massaged" their hemp seed oil into the fabric with my hands and with a fine grit sandpaper. After that soaked in and dried a bit I made a soft wax with hemp seed oil and beeswax and rubbed that in. My chair is smooth and leathery/vinyl feeling. After a year in our playroom with four young kids it still looks like the day I finished it! Your chair looks great, just needs to be softened up!
I have seen many videos on painting fabric furniture but never actually tried myself. However, the ones I have seen use regular wall paint and dilute it with fabric softener. From what I’ve heard, this makes it softer and gives it more of a leather look.
Absolutely worth the upload and the watch. So fun and informative. May have not worked out as hoped but never a 'fail' if we can learn. Love watching your videos. You're projects are amazing!
It’s OK to show the files too. That makes it more relatable and helpful. I did this before on some outdoor patio furniture. And I used regular latex paint mixed with 2 to 1 ratio of paint and fabric softener. It turned out awesome and wasn’t hard and crusty. So in case you’re ever brave enough to try it again maybe this will help lol
I am making sure I comment so the “algorithm” bumps this. There needs to be more videos like this on TH-cam. So many furniture or renovation flips look great on camera but they just don’t hold up. If you ever run out of ideas I would certain watch more flipping fails!
The fabric softener is definitely an important ingredient based on videos I have watched. It's also best to go darker with the paint than the fabric you start with
Thank you for sharing this, it always nice to know, that even people who make things look so beautiful and effortless, don’t have a win every single time. I also noticed some people already mentioned Lone Fox’s painting a chair video, I also wanted to mention that DIY Danie also has a great video about painting a chair that might be worth watching for anyone interested in trying something like this.
Even trying to do something new and it fails is still a lesson learned 🙃. It's happened to me quite a few times, but I try not to let it discouraged me. ALL of your work is fantastic and I wouldn't miss any of your vids. I've learned a lot from your beautiful work.
Great video! I love seeing the process of experimentation. I have looked into this for a project. A couple of things I've observed. 1. Closed materials like vinyl accepts the paint better than open materials like woven polyester or cotton. 2. Adding liquid fabric softener to the paint is supposed to help with keeping a soft texture the fabric. 3. A top coat would provide some stain and water blocking properties. I will be tackling this project in the spring for some furniture my wife wants on the patio.
Thank you for sharing This Realistic video ....as Yes there's Loads of videos saying This technique works and I'm so Happy Andrea Saved MY Time with this video. ..Merry Christmas ⛄🎄 to You both and The Precious Babies🥰⛄🎄🌟
Thanks for showing this. I wondered about the feel of painted upholstery. With all the paint you used, the money could have been used towards the reupholstering. You are fun to watch. May all the blessings of the holiday and the new year shine down on you and your loved ones.
I bought some very expensive chairs for an exceptionally good price. The seriously need either reupholstering or painting. The fabric is n good condition, however they're stained. We tried everything, and painting would be the only option right now. Thank you!!! 🌷
I have successfully painted 3 chairs and a couch with home depot chalk paint. Half and half I also sprayed first it took 2 and half of paint. I sanded in between and I applied wax , all the pieces look and feel like leather. 3 years ago, still look fabulous. I used home depo clear wax
A while ago I watched a DIYDani tutorial where she also painted a fabric chair and she added liquid fabric softener with her paint and it resulted in a soft finish. Maybe watch that segment and try again. I often have failures, it is how we learn and grow 😊 LOVE your channel, thank you!
I've done this successfully... trick is def the kind of fabric it is. mine was a velvet chair and i picked a color similar to the original color to hide discoloration to the original chair. use a sanding bar to "sand" the paint into to fabric and sand in between each coat. def water down your paint and get the chair wet
I was thinking, "WHY is she PAINTING that chair!!" If you want to change the color, why not dye the fabric? I don't think painting fabric would work. Just use a fabric dye and let it air dry. Great episode and a definite learning experience!
So I just watched a successful tutorial where they used clear wax at the end and it totally softened the fabric, plus they used antiquing wax for finishing touch to age it. I am going to use this technique this week on leather, wish me luck!
Poor Andrea! That was a lot of work but it definitely came out beautiful. Even if it was a fail. You didn’t know it was your first time. thankfully you did put this video up so we can learn from it. Have a blessed week y’all with this crazy Texas weather. I hope y’all were good through these tornados and thunderstorms 3/22/22 crazy weather 🤪love y’all 🙏🏽🌷💚🌷
You two just cracks my up!! Love watching and I always learn a lot from your videos. I plan on attempting to build a small table to start. You make it look so easy. Thanks 😊!
I wonder why no one ever tries fabric paint in these projects--it's specifically for painting fabric. There is also an additive that crafters can use to mix with craft paint to make it work better on fabric. Don't know if this would work on upholstery but maybe worth a try?
I painted a chair similar to the one you are working on. It took 3 containers of paint and about a week to completely dry. I did use Dixie Bell paint. The first coat I used a dark shade of blue. Then switched to Bunker Hill Blue. I never saturated with water, just sprayed. It's a process, but the outcome was wonderful. If I didn't tell you the chair was painted you would never know. A year later, still looks new. HAPPY CHRISTMAS
The best couch painting video EVER !!!! So much inspiration and information about the process that I couldn't find anywhere! I really like watching how you guys do stuff together, I do the same things at home (not far from you actually 🙂) and the editing is just awesome! I wish someone could take this videos when I do stuff.. Keep doing a great job and wish you a happy new year! ❤️
Favorite TH-cam couple EVER! Love you guys. Oh, all I kept thinking as you were going thru that paint is “omg $28 for a little jar of paint!” That chalk paint is super expensive.
Thanks for putting this up. I've seriously considered painting some chairs and have always wondered how it feels (I'm very particular about textures) now I don't have to waste my time!
I heard a fine art painter say that he "was failing better all of the time." It's a process. I never understood the painted furniture fabric idea because we live in an old house with fabric over the board and battens and paint is stiff when dried over that fabric, so why would one want to sit in a stiff, rough feeling chair? Good video. Re-upholstery is always best (and expensive). That friend's chair, however, would not be worth the expense because it's a piece that won't hold it's value over time. Best to purchase quality pieces Ethan Allen, Drexel, Hickory, etc. from estate sales and, yes, FB Marketplace, and redo those because they hold their value and will always sell at a good price because everyone knows of their quality and craftmanship.
There is fabric spray paint. Fabric softener in the water spray, and mixed into the paint. With fabric softener, you can use latex paint, too. And sand the crust fully away between each layer. Quite a few helpful videos on TH-cam about it. Some don't always look good, as far as artistically, but the technique is explained well. 🙂
I painted the arm on my faux leather sofa when the “leather” had peeled totally off. I used normal acrylic paint mixed with a little fabric softener. It’s amazing how much it feels and looks like real leather now. I saw a youtuber named Lone Fox do it (among others) and it totally works. My sofa looks like new now and it didn’t use up alot of paint. Seriously check out his video where he painted an armchair. I really recommend trying it. The arm on my sofa looked horrendous, only the fabric underside of the faux leather was left and now it looks like I had it reupholstered. Hope this can help someone save their furniture. Love from Denmark
Fails are just as important as successes. Thanks for sharing this "fail"--entertaining, and informative. Happy Holidays to you and yours!
I said the same thing! Lone Fox video was great!
My chair came out great. They messed up by using all that water and no fabric softener
Thank u for sharing
Yes the fabric softener is what really keeps it from being hard like paint. 🙂

I read about wax at the end too.
I too was wondering why she didn’t use AS method. Every video of a successful project involved sanding and wax. Like that she showed how long it actually takes and the energy to complete.
The wax finish is likely what helped.
I've used wax and it helped with the feel but left a white residue.
I think Debbie’s Design Diary has a painted velvet sofa on her channel.
I’ve painted lots of upholstery many times. Vinyl, poly silky fabrics (like most dining seats) work well. But you need to seal it with LOTS of wax to get a leather feel. Don’t try boucle, or linen type fabric it holds too much paint and becomes too hard.

Yep! Fabric paint works great. I've used it on a rocking chair twice for each of my children's nursery. Came out awesome both times.
Used that and it took sooooo many cans of that paint and then I had splotchy cushions after they sat on the porch awhile. Didn't love the spray product.

Total refresh/upgrade once in a while can really uplift our mood. Congratulations!✨✨

I love how goofy you are in the outtakes at the end. It seems like you really enjoy each other's company and you aren't trying to be super cool. I love your skills and your fabulous taste in projects.
Any chance you will make action back singlets in good quality cotton, black or red would be awesome...
Thanks for sharing your “fail” with us! It gives us a realistic view.
THANK YOU!! For sharing this fail, I have always thought painted furniture could never feel like fabric and worry about mold and such, good lessons learned and shared , cheers!
Appreciate your honesty! I'm surprised you didn't bleach out the white, and then stain the chair - since this was a cloth upholstery?
I've watched several videos on painting upholstery and many of them use fabric softener (a couple tablespoons) in the paint and waxing it after its completely dry. This helps to keep the fabric soft and often makes the fabric look like leather

Yes absolutely it was wonderful ride, very helpful! Thanks for it,
Thank you for this video!! Your fail ..not a true fail by you .. was so informative! Plus I love your design and all your DYI!! You have given me so much inspiration!! Thank you !!
I glad you posted the video. "Failures" are just as important as the successes. Great story telling and editing as always!
Visually (at least on camera) you 1000% improved the look of the chair
It turned out beautiful.
💓💓💓 I love, how you love, each other!!!🥳
I just love you two together! Hilarious and charming all at the same time. ❤
Thanks for sharing this one. I have aways wondered about painting fabric furniture.
I'm glad I got to see Dixie Belle Collard Green in action. I planning on using it to paint my dining room set. I really like the color.
It really is a beautiful color!
Thanks for this video! Exactly why I never want to paint upholstered furniture!!! Pain in the rear. Love your work.~Tammy

You guys are great and this was a fun video to watch. Lone Fox has a good video and he uses latex paint with fabric softner.
Me too it really works so good
Hi where did you get it from ?
I have seen many videos on painting fabric furniture but never actually tried myself. However, the ones I have seen use regular wall paint and dilute it with fabric softener. From what I’ve heard, this makes it softer and gives it more of a leather look.
Never tried this but I'm wondering if the latex feel is what makes it feel good rather than that rough chalky feel.
Absolutely worth the upload and the watch. So fun and informative. May have not worked out as hoped but never a 'fail' if we can learn. Love watching your videos. You're projects are amazing!
I am glad you didn't scrap the video. I was curious to see if it would work. Now I know.

Sitting on a chair I painted about a year and a half ago. I used DIY paint and it has held up beautifully. Much easier than upholstering it.
Great video! I love seeing the process of experimentation. I have looked into this for a project. A couple of things I've observed.

I will be tackling this project in the spring for some furniture my wife wants on the patio.
This gives so much hope for painting my leather brown sectional!!! I loved learning from yall with this one, thanks for posting it after all!😃💪
excellent opportunity for me to learn, thank you for posting your experience.
It’s a great color. Thanks for sharing, I really appreciate it.
Y'all are hilarious.
Thanks for sharing.
Same thing happened to me! Thanks for publishing this video!
The jump was the best!
Appreciate your honesty- integrity- 🥰🙏🏽
thank you so much i acquired sofa white and wow honesty helps me tremendously
You two are so funny together!
I've done this successfully... trick is def the kind of fabric it is. mine was a velvet chair and i picked a color similar to the original color to hide discoloration to the original chair. use a sanding bar to "sand" the paint into to fabric and sand in between each coat. def water down your paint and get the chair wet
Thanks so much for the true outcome of this project!
I was thinking, "WHY is she PAINTING that chair!!" If you want to change the color, why not dye the fabric? I don't think painting fabric would work. Just use a fabric dye and let it air dry. Great episode and a definite learning experience!
Beautiful chair. Please get it reupholstered.
I hope y’all were good through these tornados and thunderstorms 3/22/22 crazy weather 🤪love y’all 🙏🏽🌷💚🌷
Thank you so much for sharing! Definitely going to do much more research before/if I attempt anything like this. But y’all are very entertaining,
You two are adorable…the outtakes at the end show us a glimpse at how you probably laugh a lot each day. 😭
I love how funny your husband is!
a big LIKE for your perseverance!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻✨✨✨
I never thought it would of work and your video just confirmed it! Thanks guys still look good but.... Christine 🇨🇦
Project was a fail…but this video…whopping success…very entertaining!!😂😂
I used the 50/50 paint to water on a lamp shade and it dyed it and gave me a whole new look!
Interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Yes! Textile medium
I think this is better for side chairs and dining or accent chairs 💗
Andrea -- I'm always so massively blown away and impressed by your woodworking skills -- maybe you want to explore slip covering (sewing) ? ;-)
You are so funny guys, love the color, it is one of my favorite shade of green.
Thanks for the lessons! Others have made it seem EZ !😂
I did paint and fabric softener on my love seat and it was so soft and cozy
Glad I watched this. I'm definitely not going to paint a 1970's chair I have once belonging to my in-laws
I did one, and used fabric softener to dilute the paint - and it worked really fine
Thank you guys 😊 This was a great experiment and definitely worth sharing! I'm really surprised how good it looked by the finish too
Thanks for sharing the video. You are both talented creators and it’s reassuring to know it’s not only me that has a fail! Love your channel 😊
Love watching your vlog keep up the good work 💜💙
Thanks for posting this video. I will rethink wanting to do this. Also I love your channel & how cray cray y'all get! Merry Christmas.
It’s the jump at the very end for me 🤣🤣🤣
I painted the arm on my faux leather sofa when the “leather” had peeled totally off.
