My son's family lives 800 miles away from us. On a long trip like that we get 42+MPG with my Camry (in summer with the AC blasting away). I gas up before we leave, then at the 450 mile mark. Gassing up takes 5-10 minutes. I'm sure that if we made that trip in an EV, it would add many hours to the drive time and cost us much more in electricity.
A major problem in the UK is that a large percentage of owners of petrol and diesel cars and vans, retain the vehicle for a number of years, and rely on buying used replacements for the most part they are not in a position to buy new and depend on their vehicle for work. Dumping their current model could mean job loss.
Because a politician took a bribe, passed legislation that let the bureaucracy enforce any regulations the bureaucrats want, and auto manufactures are obligated. To compete with subsidized Chinese cars and trucks. Leaving legacy auto makers deep in debt...
This is a classic situation of politicians forcing policies on the public without doing proper due diligence as to a cost benefit analysis, prior to setting targets for the abolition of the Internal combustion engines! They had no idea the extent the whole of their systems would have to be changed. For every one of the ICE vehicles to be replaced with an EV is impossible as there is not the raw materials on the planet to supply them! Even half take-up would be very doubtful. Even so the amount of upgrades to the electricity supply network is of a magnitude of a factor of 3 if not higher & that could not be achieved in the very limited time frame they set! Then we have the manufacturers in the west all now cutting back of canceling their production lines of EV's! as they are not commercially viable!
While they may be pushing EVs on us, many consumers are pushing back. It is just a basic fact of life that when someone invents a truly better mousetrap, it will eventually supplant older types. Looking back at the history of inventions, everything that replaced something else did so because it worked just as well (if not better) than what it replaced. It was as reliable (or more so) than what it replaced. Its cost was not out of proportion to what it (and that which came before it) offered. This is why cellphones have mostly replaced landlines, and DVDs (and now streaming) replaced VHS tapes. EVs in their current form do not meet all of those requirements. They have higher cost, more (sometimes much more) inconvenience and do very little that the average gas powered car or truck can't do. Until that changes, they (despite various governments' efforts to put their thumbs on the scales) will never be more than niche vehicles for those who can afford them. In other words, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Which is why most buyers prefer that which works well and is affordable and has been so for over a century.
No one is even remotely thinking about the requirements EV should meet to compete with ICE cars or be better. The only possibility I see is some kind of hydrogen technology but using chemical (i.e ammonia) rather than physical (temperature, compression) hydrogen storage. The only problem is that creating any manufactured energy carrier there's a need to supply energy that can be stored. And this may be the biggest challenge.
I hope these things continue to be rejected. And I hope it’s with a vengeance. How cool would it be to watch people “pull starting” their 2-stroke mobile phones?!
Hybrid vehicles should be the way forward. Totally banning petrol and diesel vehicles will cause unnecessary stress and complications. Public transport in the UK is unreliable and many rely on private and or business vehicles to get about. Recharging facilities are limited and require expansion and improving. Hybrid vehicles would provide the stepping stone to allow full decarbonisation of transportation in a realistic timescale.
Also specialization would work: somebody drives a few kilometres every day…small EV would do. If you drive more on highways, diesel would do. Taxis? Hybrids. Ambulances? Gasolin. Intermediate? Trains. If you fly to holiday destination, once a year only! Consume less, move closer to your workplace, buy smaller house… But you need to beat Johnses, right?

They would be just as happy if you were to buy a hydrogen powered car rather than an electric one. As long as you don't keep on with big, powerful diesels. Don't you believe that cars, beef farming, forest clearing etc are NOT harmful to our only planet?
I like my magnesium e-bike, it weighs 44 lbs looks good and is fun and durable. Others? Not so much... Looking like motorcycles, slower, heavier (up to 350 lbs). These heavy, low capacity luxury EV's seemed planned to fail. Just enough allure, including company and government rebates to be a trap. The two main electric motorcycle companies here in Canada, push 40K dollars with full options, fast charging etc. Those are HD's Livewire division and Zero. Very forced marketing.
EV's are not pollution free. It takes 14 tons of ore to produce 1 ton of lithium. Lithium mines are among the most polluting in the world and leave a highly toxic sludge behind. Almost the entire car is made up of oil byproducts. Tires, upholstery, coating on the wires, battery casings, and frequently the entire body. A lot of repair companies refuse to work on these things due to the danger posed by the batteries. Instead, they are often junked, even with relatively minor damage. Since clean atomic energy has been banned and hydroelectric is unavailable over large portions of the world they are building coal fired power stations to provide the electricity for these ev's. US, China and India are three major countries switching to coal power.
I doubt in real terms that EVs are having much of a impact on emissions at all when you consider the losses in the grid that are always present and are if anything exacerbated by heavy and unpredictable loads like large scale public charging (at home charging may be a bit different) EVs are definitely more efficient in terms of energy conversion but I wonder if all the grid losses and additional weight of the vehicles outweigh the round trip efficiency of the vehicles themselves
You people are eating the coolaid while it’s frozen your brains must hurt. I can save 3500 a year in fuel costs over your car so what a window motor goes out for 200 bucks it takes a half hour to fix it. I bought a used one they get half million miles on the major components and the parts are super simple to replace on your own with small handful of affordable tools. I’m also skipping a thousand dollars of oil changes and another thousand flushing all the fluids annually as well as tires. No I have just tires. For half my saving but I’m still saving the other half. So many affordable used ev vehicles now just go try one out you will never look back. They do need a bit more range but it’s not really the issue it seemed it might be. I don’t miss the price per gallon of gas it’s a relief to drive past them and know my car will just be ready to go in the morning for the day for less than half of my gas bill and I can further cut down costs by charging at a public post. And it goes faster. I can plug in off my back door it’s super convenient
Some of the points stated here are either overstated or outdated. Some are valid but are being addressed with each passing month. Attempts like this to vilify Ev's are going to fail. After a slight leveling off in late 23, early 24, EV sales are up 18% in the second quarter of this year vs 23. Besides myself, many people I know recently moved to Ev's and love them. How do you know if it’s the best car you’ve ever driven? it’s still brand new, come back here in 8-10 years and let us know how you’re ev is still doing.
@@travisedmiston8001 I know the things I like about it aren’t going to change. The smoothness, the power, the ability to have a full “tank” every morning for 5 cents a mile. Since the battery has a 100k warranty and there are few moving parts, I think I’m good.
@@zdenekkindl2778 that is true, but considering how few moving drivetrain parts there are, it’s hard to imagine a whole lot going wrong when compared to an ICE car with thousands. And if you want to talk about electronics, all modern cars are filled with them.
No one is pushing EV's on anyone! Truth is EV's are better designed, safer, more ecologically friendly, vehicles the the ICE vehicles. Gas prices are ripping us off, dealerships are ripping us off, insurance companies are ripping us off, repair shops are ripping us off, auto body shops are ripping us off. EV's are a threat because they are cheaper to make, and they are cheaper to drive, and have less technological issues when they do have a issue all that is required is an over the air update lets see the legacy makers do that ICE vehicles can't. The Legacy automakers got fat, got lazy, got greedy (UAW members), and became satisfied with the status quo of $75-120K prices tags. Americans deserve a choice, that we have been denied all of my driving life. The Legacy gang realize that they and the UAW usefulness to their customers are dying before their very eyes. As an act of desperation by the legacy gang bringing back the 1950's era models lookalikes in 2025. They fail to realize that these type vehicles are dead before the 1st one hit's the road. They are DOA and the legacy gang want to sell these special edition models for more than the average customer is willing to pay. The Legacy gang are the modern day horse sellers of the old west. And we All know what happened to them, died out because the couldn't adapt to the needs of their customers.
Yes, nobody is pushing EV's. They're simple demanding the slow removal of the ICE vehicle as an option through mandates and tailpipe emission standards they simply can't meet. All while giving away our hard earned tax money in EV welfare programs to 'encourage' the purchase of a certain vehicle. The EV. And that also includes hybrids and a few other options. . . So the $15.00 an hour server at the coffee shop with a 20 year old beat up honda can help the guy in the suit and tie pay for his awesomely new EV..On the other hand, it's just as easy... and as accurate to say ....they are being pushed but for some reason that word triggers a lecture on truth even though it's just a shorter way of describing the obvious . . Real world usage on a larger scale has also tossed all the money saving claims the EV was supposed to have over an ICE vehicle out the window. False claims made years ago have been proven wrong yet they're still being repeated over and over for some odd reason. Current claims seem to indicate they have as much as 80% more issues than their ICE counterparts, public charging can cost more than gas and nobody wants a used EV making depreciation loss higher than it's ice counterpart . Ongoing misinformation and ridiculously false cost saving claims about the EV probably turns my view on them off even more than the EV itself. Overall they can be a nice option, for some, but the outdated fanatical claims certainly don't help move the needle for those of us who have been on the fence..
@@cherylallen7395 Respectfully I strongly disagree. Your point about tax money being spent on EV's is down right insulting when you consider everything out tax dollars support, ABORTIONS, Transgender's operations, illegal aliens. Way to many examples to go on, I suggest you get your head out of the sand. And I am being polite here.

Its about control...my god
