      In the Imperial period, the Romans executed lots of people by letting them get gored and killed by wild animals in the Colosseum. Sometimes the shows would be designed to replicate mythological stories, sometimes not. A lot of early Christian martyrs were killed this way, like Perpetua, who was gored and trampled by a mad cow.

      They had lot of problems filming it too. Ford was injured while filming so they had to adjust it to salvage the movie and it's a testament to everyone's skill that the movie works. • @GuineaPigEveryday
      @GuineaPigEveryday 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Lukkilikka a more coherent narrative? How. I mean all three films have mostly simple understandable narratives becuz they are adventure films. In the case of temple of doom there's all this weird stuff about voodoo, slave labour, sacrifices, all this background stuff about the people and these stones and their magic etc etc. All that Raiders is: Nazis want Ark which can unleash great power. We don't need to have all this random stuff explained to us, just that the ark is powerful, its mysterious and simple. Temple of Doom is overly complicated and spends most of the film just in one place. There is very little action except in the final 20-30 minutes where all of its condensed in one big overlong set piece. Raiders spaces out the action and actually provides adventure for the main character to go on.

    You know what's funny about Shmi's death and the effects it has on Anakin?
    There's literally no reason for him to believe that she was still a slave for all that time. He never blames himself for not freeing her, not on screen at any rate. He never blames the Jedi for not freeing her, or not letting him go and free her. He blames the Tuskens for killing her, and himself for not being able to save her.
    I can't think of any good reason, considering all that, why Anakin couldn't know that his mother was freed by Lars. We can make the Jedi look well-meaning but ineffectual by having them send somebody to pick up Shmi, only to find that she's already been freed, then shrug and go "Ah well, no point in hanging around here now" and report back. If Anakin mentions his nightmares to Obi-Wan, and Obi-Wan just tells him: "Your mother is safe, don't worry about it, remember to let go of attachment" then what really changes in Anakin's motivation? He can still make the choice to abandon his protection duties and jet off to Tatooine; he didn't go there to free Shmi, but because he was having prophetic nightmares about her. It's not like he was likely to go and visit her as a free woman, when he never managed to get time to visit her when he thought she was a slave, promise to free her be damned.

    • @BoleDaPole
      @BoleDaPole 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Admittedly this part is a big vague in the film but thankfully gets covered in the Episode II novelisation ,
      but from what we can assume from the film is that Anakin didn't feel a need to free his mother as she worked for Watto doing basic domestic labor, and was later freed.
      We can also assume that he could feel she was happy or content, because he felt her pain later on which made him go find her.
      I'm sure he would've wanted to go back home but he was far too busy training to become a Jedi.
      It's almost like the film is trying to teach us about sacrifice , idk 🤷‍♂️

    • @maryreilly5102
      @maryreilly5102 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think freeing slaves was the job the Jedi. It is clear in the first episode that not even Padme could free her, even though she had political power. Qui-gonn and Obi Wan see all the slaves in Tatooine but do nothing about it because in a way they exist to uphold the current political order. They are not just "guardians of the galaxy" in a trite sense where any wrondoing is punished by them. They are still an arm of the Republic and tatooine is run by mafia-like people that are very difficult to uproot, just like on planet Earth. In a way, part of the Jedi training was letting go of attachment regardless of whether the people you are attached to during childhood are safe or not. I mean, letting go of attachment is not only "I let go when I know they are safe" but also the opposite, "I let go even though I know they are in pain", which can instil fear and anger into a Jedi etc etc...

    I think people don't give enough credit to some of the creativity in this film, especially on Geonosis with the battle at the end. You've got a desert world that feels different to Tatooine, flying bug people, each of the arena monsters feel very unique. Even Kamino, it's not just a water world of fish people that you see in countless sci fi stories, the people have long necks and the buildings are on stilts, with a harsh white interior. The ST had some cool ideas like the salt planet Crait and the junk planet Jakku, but a lot of the worlds just felt bland.
    The Obi-wan plot is good. It's really the Anakin/Padme Romance that really drags the movie down to most people. But when I first saw this as a kid, I was at that age where it seemed like *all* movies had a "boring talking bit" before you got to the good stuff.

    Yoda feels like a character they massively wasted the potential of in the prequels. When I was a kid watching Empire Strikes Back i always imagined Yoda being this being who used to be a powerful jedi, but has grown so old that that was part of his real distant past. The idea of him having a focus on force power in his old age during this era would have been *really* cool and would have given his scenes a real presence, it would make them really stand out. Instead he's just... a regular, slightly quicker, way goofier looking jedi like any other. I don't mind it, but t's real silly and could have been so much more.
    To put my view into context, I think every film post-Empire is flawed in its own way, but the fun outweighs the flaws and I love every one of them for what they are anyway.

A true Jedi. Like imagine he strifes jukes and guards with his lightsaber and only ever guards and he does it almost like a rhythmic dance moving in Harmony with the flow of the force. The part that always tied my brain into a knot about the love story in this movie is when Anakin is talking blatantly about over throwing the Senate to a dictatorship during their date in the grass. And they just kind of laugh it off and pretend like he didn't just say that and it's always weird because padme had heard that and even responded to it but didn't dive deeper into that. Especially he follows it up later in the movie with the tantrum about killing the women and children. It baffles me that the relationship even got off the ground to begin with. The relationship and romance is the worst part of this movie. I remember when I saw this when I was 8 and I didn't like it then. Today I still don't really care for this movie either. It's my least favorite Star Wars movie.

    All the behind the scenes info I learn about the prequels is “it was going to be revealed that [insert character] was behind [insert important plot event] in the next movie” and then none of these ideas were followed through on. I mean I can’t imagine that they would have made the prequels “good” films but these ideas sure sound more interesting than what we got. Just one more reason why these huge franchise series should really be planned out extensively ahead of time. The Jazz-FrenchNewWave-esque improvisational filmmaking really just doesn’t work when the poetics is the most important aspect of a saga.

    30:15 as I understand it, the idea of having three villains in the prequels is to show the three facets of Darth Vader.
    Darth Maul: The sith assassin.
    Count Dooku: The fallen Jedi.
    Grievous: The cyborg.
    Put them all together and you get the ultimate sith apprentice. Darth Vader.

    Here's a thing I noticed: the very last shot of the movie, when you see the troopers marching up the Star Destroyer ramp, for a brief moment the music turns into the Game of Thrones theme! GoT came much later obviously, so might just be a coincidence but it's very clearly the same music

    The Prequel Trilogy is a fucking masterclass of cinema and story telling when compared to the Disney Trilogy

      force awakens is at worst an acceptable movie but definitely way better than 1 and 2

    I’ve always had the feeling that the lightsaber was a technology that replaces a past force power. Like it used to be a controlled force lightning or focused plasma that was used by high powered force users as a sword weapon and eventually got updated with different tech so it didn’t require as much power to use. Maybe the crystal was used with force lightning to create a plasma and then focused with telekinesis. Over time a power plant was incorporated into a handle and then eventually other electronics were used to control the plasma. It was just something about the way it was revered in the first movie that made it seem like a more dangerous weapon that couldn’t be used by non force users, but the incarnation that we know is just too easy for anyone to pickup and wield. Cause if it’s just the deadly aspect of it that requires focus and foresight to use, that can be said of any weapon. Idk, maybe it’s just a class thing and a lightsaber just meant anyone seeing you using one knew it meant you were highly trained and it would be kill or be killed. So to pick one up if not trained properly was just a death sentence from force users.

    The funniest thing to me about this movie is that when the gunship drops off obi wan and anakin to fight dooku and then get blown up, a clone jumps off and tries to join them nuts get shot off the platform. Thinking about an alternate universe where the single generic clone joins them for the fight against dooku.
