About Me...I've over 30yrs in the Decorating trade working in the family business (set up by my father in 1965 - who's still working today and his apprentice who started with him at the age of 15 in 1966 is also still working for us too).I've served a proper apprenticeship (with papers) from leaving school in 1990, being one of the last to gain City & Guilds before it moved over to NVQ.I passed Advanced C&G in 1994 with two distinctions and one credit. One of the awards I won while at college was winning the BDA Cup (British Decorators Association) for high standards in practical work. Then I went on to do C&G 1+2 in teacher trainer where I then taught P&D and co lectured on the decorative paint effects evening course (Marbling, Graining, broken colour work) for the next 3yrs at Basford Hall College in Nottingham (UK).... the rest is history.

@@ProfessionalPainterDecorator good thing Phil, you explain everything great, I've been a painter since late 80s and still like watching and learning how tradesmen do different jobs, I can just imagine some of my old mentors turning in their graves at using a laser, they where up in arms when water based gloss first appeared 😀 👍

When I served my time the correct way to paper a room was to work from the window wall back to the corner where you lost the pattern and not back into the window. So in theory you should of started in the opposite window corner, back around to where you lost the pattern. Its to stop light hitting the joints if you understand what I mean?

I understand it totally. It's working from the window/main light source when papering a ceiling that's the main issue with joints being raised on one side.
I don't get raised joints on walls so it's doesn't matter as they don't show.... Seam rollers come in very handy lol

Can you get pasteing machines in the uk.. id never put sandpaper against a finished ceiling ..

      Yes you can.
It's not sandpaper against the ceiling. I wrap the end in soft cloth.
The head of the pole just has a s flat sanding attachment on it.

All good except I think you should always work away from the light where possible to hide the joints

Back in the day of poor trimming, edges could show as raised.
Now days, better cutting and skills of hanging, using seam rollers, not so detrimental.
And depending where you are in a room, with where you'll lose the pattern, you'll always have one wall you may find you're working towards. Plus these are flat papers and not with a relief on them like a blown vinyl etc
Ceilings... Work away from.the main light source.
