- Could today get any more interesting? BNSF 5521 (C44-9W) and BNSF 4825 (C44-9W) are leading a manifest eastbound, when suddenly there is a loud bang, as heard at 1:11, and the train comes to a screeching stop. As I had already predicted, an air hose broke, and they had to stop the train in order to get everything back in order. As a result, the next inbound metra had to be held at the switches before Stone Avenue so that the train could proceed through there and at this station and board and discharge people on the center track.

I feel sorry for the person who has to walk and check all of those cars to find out which air hose broke?WHEW
The conductor
@@kishascapeused to be the car inspector if there was one around the conductor would be the 1st one to say we don't need those fukin car inspectors but when something like that happened it changed to wheres that fukin car inspector I was a car inspector for 35 years and have walked a bunch of em
Just over a minute to stop that beast. That's pretty impressive....I would've guessed a bit longer.
Completely agree with you rythym23, these peeps are all over the place interrupting good stuff with bad crap!! Cheers :-)
That's an interesting situation there! I have heard many times of that happening.
When the air goes, you always wanted to be sure to keep the slack on the head end bunched up or the train would break in two. Especially if there was a lot of power on the head end.
sounds like he blew a glad hand hose which triggered this train in to emergency
So many odd cars just randomly put on that train lol.
Awesome catch, Larry! That is SWEET!
Great catch! How lucky it happened near you! 65 seconds to stop.
Holy moly, the GE-lead train broke-down in the birthplace of EMD! LOL (I still love GE and EMD equally, though!)
Wow!!! It slowly stopped. Incredible!!!
Wow!!! A water slide. Incredible!!!
Are you kidding that's a fast stop.
For the amount of cars that were on that train. A lot of those cars were empty that's why the train stops so fast.
I dk why e brakes on trains are a gradual stop. You would think it would jam on
@peterwilson21 thast about average, I worked on a train with 146 cars.
39 cars later it stopped. I would have left the platform, you have no clue why it went into emergency and it was moving.
U would think the E brake would happen immediately. No wonder so long to stop
Once again George Westinghouse's air brake system stops a bad wreck from potentially happening. Concept and operating principles are still largely unchanged from his original system today, jut continuous and ongoing enhancements and improvements to make the system better and better, likely closer and closer if not more than what he originally envisioned.
@BrianDavid79: That doesn't necessarily mean a broken air hose. That air dump sound happens every time a train goes into emergency no matter what the cause.
You're the only one I've seen comment this. When I heard the pop the first thing I thought was, "There's emergency."
It could have been an air hose, of course but that pop/pressure release could have also been the train going into emergency.
@conhopper78 Realize that America is an *enormous* country. Renewing track in the US is a different proposition altogether than doing the same in the UK.
I always hear Europeans talk about high speed rail, and I agree it can make sense in some areas of the US (the east and west coasts in particular) but the rest of the country is too spread out.
I think you forgot the EXTREMELY busy Northeast Corridor.
As long as there is a demand. There has to be a demand. California forgot about that.
You don’t stop a train of an air hose breaks- it stops itself
Not sure if the uploader is aware but a broken airhose will dump the air by itself, because theres now an open end on both ends of the brake pipe, tripping the PCS and well emergency
About 1:24 -1:30 hotbox axle much on that one tanker?
That's what happens to you life when you get married lol!!!
Yes, it does... when the condom breaks!
that is not in La Grange b/c it has two Tracks , La Grange has One track in town
This most certainly is LaGrange Illinois
That sounded like he lost an air hose. Pretty routine actually.
where is this La Grange???... i know one at La grange ,kentucky...other la grange ???
Lagrange Illinois, just West of Chicago.
The people watching this video, see how long it takes for the train to stop. REMEMBER THIS NEXT TIME YOU THINK YOU CAN BEAT A TRAIN AT A RAILROAD CROSSING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i had two union pacific train both go into emergancy. only up engines had stoped by me
1:11
This is the perfect video to show those whose family members had been killed in a railroad accident. Even with emergency brakes, a train could take about half a mile to come to a complete stop.
Nothing stops the Chief!
I don't hear anything
@Boss302fan A loaded railcar by hand. Have you never heard of a Shunter?
@WhyDidIJustEatThat uh...yes. I was responding to your "try stopping a single boxcar, let alone pushing it' comment.
whoa, airhose broke at 1:08
Nothing all that great.
Also when an airhose breaks you have no choice but to stop and get everything in order. When the hose breaks the train goes into emergency!
that bang was an airhose
uhhh, yeah this train caused me to miss the NS train which had CN power.
@Boss302fan Slight difference between a mile long (loaded) train and a single boxcar. T__T
Today April 11 somebody was hit by a train at Stone AVE. Man commited suicide 4 have happened since beginning of March. brutal
Rule one of TH-cam: whenever anyone writes "MUST SEE!!!" on their video, you know you don't need to watch it. It's not a bad video but, come on, watching a train stop isn't much more interesting than watching a train not stop.
Can cars with roller bearings get (hot box)?
rythym23 yes, if they run out of lubricant.
why in america are the trains so long for???
can you read descriptions?
@conhopper78 You ever heard of Acela......
40 car lengths
@Boss302fan Oh. I see. I thought you were talking about a diff comment. ''>.>
@WhyDidIJustEatThat While this will sound like BS...I'm sure many railroads will tell you tales of pushing railcars by hand. I shit you not! LOL
i knew trains took a long time to stop with the wheight that they are but not that long...
@chuckufarly5 Try stopping a single boxcar, let alone pushing it with your bare hands.
I Knew I Shoulda Taped It I Seen The WHole Thing But Wasnt Sure To Get My Camera Out
The engineer heard about the shack out in la Lagrange
Meanwhile on La Grange Road, Gridlock!!!
So true...
What happened was it a train crash
As a railroad worker the first couple issues is either a broken Airline or broken knuckle.
Thank You!
Those are the first two things that you take notice of. Then as a train goes by you can tell cars that are full or cars that are empty. They make different sounds. Then you look at what kind of terrain were on. Highspots low spots. As trains go together or separate kind of like an accordion they call that slack action.
Well, shows ya thats what its supposed to do
1 min 6 secs to come to a complete stop
Ummmm yes the train is in emergency.
@WhyDidIJustEatThat I've railroaded 30 years (some of it in the UK) so I know what a switch engine or "shunter" is. However, I can also tell you I have seen people push railcars by hand...in particular empty ones that are already rolling.
this is not an emergency stop. copy this in youtbe searchbar and watch the first vid. that´s a freight train doing an emergnecy stop Train safety system indusi in action, train is to fast, compulsion emergency brake
Easy big fella
Ummmm
They should put people in the cab of and Engine and have them try to stop a train, then put them behind the wheel of a tractor trailer and be cut off and try not to lock up the brakes. Maybe we wouldn't have so many jackknife accidents or people trying to beat a train.
