My strategy is to be excessively awkward, such as standing close and facing the other person in the elavator, while licking my lips and never breaking eye contact. This purposeful awkwardness results in less feelings of actual akwardness. It also may result in sexual harassment charges.

All you do to stop there being an awkward tension is do a small smile when getting in the elevator and then once you are in neither of you will expect any more interaction ^____^ if you want to interact though you could just bring something up about the weather - small talk :) Wouldn't it be cool though if everyone wasn't always trying so hard to be 'normal'? If we could all just talk to each other no matter what the situation without being seen as an eccentric person or without wanting to be left alone, to want nothing to do with the other person...I'd start conversations all the time on the train, the bus...if i wasn't so shy~

I once followed a guy home who I was on a really akward date with, and we used the elevator and had this double akward moment with one of his neighbours. We didn't say anything until we got into the apartment and we just looked akwardly at each other and the neighbour and we didn't know which one of us was suposed to go out from the elevator first, I thought he should since I didn't know which way his apartment was but I assume he was trying to do the "ladies first", and meanwhile his neighbour was waiting to get into the elevator. It was a messed up, overly akward situation. I'm afraid of elevators now.
I'm scared of elevators too because once I got on an elevator and the doors shut and it went up anyway the doors didn't open for a while and when they finally did open I told my dad I am never going on elevators again and he also made a joke while we were in the elevator he said it would be funny if the elevator doors never opened but I don't know how that was funny to him!!!!!!!😦

Why is it when you're with a close friend or family that is called " comfortable silence" but with with someone you're not used to it's called "awkward silence"? For me it's just a period where you are either reflecting on what has been said or thinking of what to talk about next. When someone says " well this is awkward" or " awkward siilence" I'm like... " it's only awkward if you make it awkward". When I get awkward it is when I lose confidence with myself or with the topic... so state of mind is definitely apart of that.
