I agree with all of this - thank you! The one caveat in my opinion is don't speak tooooo slowly from Intermediate level and up. They need to be prepared to understand English in an everyday setting and they will be shocked and overwhelmed when they hear English outside the classroom at its natural speed, and I think speaking to them unnaturally slowly is not teaching them to communicate in English, instead it is teaching them to only understand English from an ESL teacher. Definitely good to strike a balance!

A great video Eric and all wonderful ideas. All these practical ideas make good teachers but learning a bit more about language acquisition and teaching methodology will definitely place you ahead other language teachers. If language teachers have never learned a foreign language, then they will be unable to empathise with their learners. So I think knowing a little more about language acquisition theory will help teachers refine their teaching or learn a little more about the processes their students are undergoing.

Communicate clearly, that way you can teach speaking and listening them and they build more language and engage with them. In a nutshell, speak clearly with them. Student exposure to English is one of most important part, since it's learning English not teaching.
Share some life experience, which can be related directly to studying or just for push.
Be well prepared; set a side your ego and go over your all points before each class. It improves confidence, time management and quality.

    Hi Eric
I Want to ask how can I encourage students to ask questions in classroom using 5 fingers ( I mean wh questions how, when, where, why and who)?

    • @etacude
      @etacude  4 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm sure there are techniques but it has to be drilled into them. Every time when I start class students do some kind of speaking activity. Before they start I tell them to practice asking follow-up questions. When the activity is over I ask them what follow-up question they asked. You can also practice by getting the other students to ask 5W questions during the class. It has to become second nature to them.

This transcript of a TH-cam presentation titled "10 Qualities of Good ESL Teachers" provides an overview of the characteristics that constitute a good ESL teacher. However, it is critical to critically examine the content for areas for improvement:
    1. Inadequate Elaboration: The presenter briefly mentions each quality without providing detailed explanations or examples to support their claims. This gives the audience only a cursory understanding of the qualities and how to apply them in practice.
    2. Exaggeration: The presenter exaggerates complex aspects of teaching, such as classroom management and lesson planning. Controlling the classroom, for example, is reduced to keeping students engaged and having structured lessons, without addressing potential challenges or providing strategies for effective classroom management.
    3. Lack of Research-Based Evidence: The presenter provides no research-based evidence or references to back up their claims about the characteristics of a good ESL teacher. Including relevant studies or expert opinions would have given the presentation more credibility and helped viewers understand the reasoning behind each quality.
    4. Limited Perspective: The presenter's viewpoint appears to be based on their personal experiences rather than considering a broader range of teaching contexts and student needs. Different teaching environments and student populations may necessitate different approaches and qualities in an ESL teacher, which this presentation does not adequately address.
    5. Lack of Diversity: The presenter focuses primarily on communication clarity, getting students to talk, and relationship building. While these are critical, there needs to be more emphasis on other critical aspects such as individualized instruction, cultural sensitivity, differentiation, assessment, and ongoing professional development.
    6. Ignoring Language Acquisition Theories: The presenter does not mention any language acquisition theories or approaches that could be used to inform effective ESL teaching practices. Understanding theories like communicative language teaching, the input hypothesis, and the affective filter can help an ESL teacher greatly improve his or her ability to facilitate language learning.
    7. Exaggerated Treatment of Enthusiasm: While enthusiasm is mentioned as an important quality, the presenter needs to elaborate on how to maintain enthusiasm in the face of challenges or provide strategies for cultivating it. Furthermore, enthusiasm cannot compensate for a lack of other essential teaching qualities or pedagogical expertise.
    8. Lack of Practical Strategies: The presentation lacks practical strategies or techniques for implementing the mentioned qualities. Viewers would benefit from specific examples, teaching tips, or suggested activities that show how these characteristics can be applied in the ESL classroom.
    9. Visual Presentation: The presenter uses only spoken content and does not use visual aids such as slides or graphics to improve understanding or engagement. Incorporating visual elements could have improved the presentation's visual appeal and comprehension.
    10. Lack of a Conclusion or Summary: The presentation ends abruptly without a conclusion or summary of the qualities discussed. A brief summary of the qualities and their significance would have provided closure and reinforced the main points for the audience.
While the TH-cam presentation highlights the qualities of a good ESL teacher, there are several areas for improvement, such as providing more in-depth explanations, incorporating research-based evidence, addressing a broader range of teaching contexts, and offering practical implementation strategies.

PASSION - fake! ENTHUSIASM - ok, but a better word is INTERESTED. Must be interested in (i) linguistics or (ii) education or (iii) the human beings in your class (they are humans, not merely students). For most english "teachers", its just a job...and it shows.
