This video has been incredibly enlightening. Thanks for sharing this! I have to say I am really still shocked at hearing that someone in a product team in Google doubted your ability to smoothly transition to a product team. You managed to get a full scholarship to one of the best and most selective high schools in the world, you went to an incredibly selective university and managed to get an opportunity to work for a great team at Google and they somehow still doubted your ability to "learn excel!" If this doesn't show to people the struggles minorities have to go through, and specially women of color have to go through to have a chance to move forward with their careers I don't know what will. For every privileged white person that goes around telling people "oh college is overrated" etc. there are countless of folks who had to go to these prestigious schools and programs just so that they can turn off the unconscious biases people have about them so they can have a chance at having a seat at the table.
Shout out to all the non-traditional MBA students! I'm graduating this Sunday and my background is in Clinical Exercise Science. It is NEVER too late to go after your dreams, and ANYTHING you want to do (and put the work behind 😉) is 100% attainable! Loved this video!
I got a master's in education and am nervous being with classmates who come from an extensive quant background. I just started but I'm hoping to learn more each day and build up my confidence. I just started two weeks ago!
This video really resonated with me! I just graduated from Howard University with two degrees and I've been telling myself for the longest time that I want to go to law school! But I know my heart isn't in it. I think completing an MBA give me the chance to take my true dreams seriously! Thanks Tamar- I hope we can connect (:
Crazy to think someone as accomplished as yourself (scholarships, majors in major uni) still needed an MBA as a motivation to stay level with stereotypical america !
This is common for Black women. We are treated as worthless in corporate America and if you don't acquire something(education) to motivate you, then you will lose all self-esteem/confidence.
I just got accepted in the MBA program for the fall. My employer will be paying for it as long as I pass the classes. If I fail, I would have to pay them back. I work full-time so I have to go on a part-time basis.
I just love it when I see African American women get education and higher level degrees Education for women is true empowerment Black people have suffered so much It's time for women to rise n shine
omg so glad i stumbled upon your video tamar!! I’m moving to SF, a forte launcher, and am also trying to pivot to media tech! Hearing your experience is so so helpful - thank you!!!
This was super helpful, Tamar! Applying to deferred MBA programs now as a college senior & was really interested in hearing your background through Google & ultimately Netflix. All the best from Chicago!
We never met but boy our story is similar. Brooklyn girl, gone to Columbia and now getting ready to apply to MBA, currently working in technology and marketing.
@@sanjana9695 Was she born in India or International student? The only groups that fall under the under represented minority in MBA are American born Black Americans and Hispanics Americans. If you're a woman under these groups it's another boost.
Honestly, I completely understand - it’s crazy expensive! Part time programs can be a great way to spend less money on a program (and keep making money at your full time job) if you’re still interested in attending.
Don't do it! I acquired my MBA from a Tier 1 state school and my employer paid. I have zero debt. Do not go into debt just to acquire an Ivy League degree.
Thanks Tamar for creating this video. I am wondering If I can get your thoughts on this: - I have been working for over 10 years and have been feeling stuck in my career. - During coffee chats, I was suggested to consider MBA or MS Computer Science (I don't have an undergrad in CS but saw there are some bridging programs out there for those who don't). Wondering what do you think about MBA vs MS Computer Science? - I think MS is usually for those who usually have around 2 years of work experience but may not be appropriate for those with more work experience. - I think with MS CS one tends to become a software developer writing code. Pays well but just writing code. - With MBA people usually tend to go into 3 buckets (consulting, IB/financial services & tech). My perception is that the work life balance of consulting/financial services isn't great and also getting there in mid 30s is tough but tech (product management seems to be the most popular role in tech post MBA, though the current tech economy isn't great with layoffs) seems more open with better work life balance. Would love to get your thoughts.
Hi Tamar, thanks for sharing your experience. I'm also an account strategist in an ad tech company and pursuing an MBA! Good to hear some experience that I can relate to. I had 8 years of experience in ad tech and gaming industry in China. Kinda worried that longer than average working experience would affect the chance to get admitted. Could you share how many years of working experience you had before you went to business school? Thanks!
Hello 👋🏾, My BS is a communications/media degree, and I’m thinking about going back for my MBA. I’d love to hear more about your personal development in media and where your MBA has taken you career wise.
It sounds like you had a competitive profile. I would need to work on my work experience and improve my math to get a completive score on the GMAT to even be considered. The only reason I would want standard is because I want to tackle global poverty. I have worked through the problem a lot. In fact most nights I struggle sleeping. It is a fire in my bones. Always in the back of my mind. A start up culture focused on innovation is possibly the best route for me to tackle poverty. Stanford has a very strong social entrepreneurship focus, with many businesses classes on using business to do good. My goal is to get a 760 on the GMAT. My math is nowhere near that and currently probably one of the lowest in the country. So it will also take considerable work. I also may try to work in product management services for a few years. Stanford is a complete long shot/practically impossible for someone with my background. Below average to average intelligence at the best. But I do have a vision of how we can tackle poverty. For me many of the answers are counter intuitive and run contrary to the opinion of experts. Despite the unlikelihood of the goal I must do what is best in helping the poor of the world. It will be an uphill battle to get accepted though with my background. I guess there are always less competitive schools if it ends up as not a possibility.
It gives me hope that there are untraditional people per say that gets in!! Thank you so much for this video, would you mind me asking you some more questions?
Brilliant video Tamar ! As someone who dreams of doing his mba from M7 bschool I have a question , Will the average acads (which I tool 8 years back)come back to haunt me ? My gmat score is really gold at 750+ but I feel the acads might hold me back a bit [Indian Male Engineer ]

As far as I know, most people at Stanford worked at least 2 years, and the majority at least 4 years. The range differs across schools I’m sure, but I think many want to see work experience.
Netflix does not require a Stanford MBA, there are thousands of jobs where you can make higher salaries than Netflix without wasting time working on nonsense projects in business school 🏫

Lol what? My best friends who have very high gpa female Indian women did not get into their desired college

Exact same reason i went to grad school. People always doubt us so we def need those credentials to shut them up fr
This was wonderful Tamar
I grew up with not much, so the cost of business school is so paralyzing for me. I literally get anxiety at the thought of it.

I had 4 years of work experience and ~4-5 years was the average at GSB. Depending on the school more work experience can be the average too, though :)

Was your being a MBA candidate key to getting that Netflix internship?
Hi Pick! This internship was specifically for MBA students, but to be on the team in general, you don't necessarily need an MBA.
It gives me hope that there are untraditional people per say that gets in!! Thank you so much for this video, would you mind me asking you some more questions?

I have a question, can you apply for an MBA straight after undergraduate, will colleges allow or do u have to work for a bit first before applying?
