I have to say that as a piece, this arrangement is really boring.... this and the G3 piece, Thinking Out Loud could have benefited from a bit more variation. .. and I have to qualify that statement with fact that I have been teaching and entering students into these exams for 10 years. This June (2018) I have 12 entrants from G2 to G7, including acoustic 3 and 5. So while I appreciate the fact that every year the syllabus gets more engaging with the addition of stuff like the Hot Rock series and the recent acoustic grades, I do feel some more creativity could be used in certain arrangements. Also, there's a chasm between G5 and G6 acoustic! Compare Blackbird to The Boxer or Man in The Mirror. (And can we have some acoustic 6 performance videos please?) Anyway, despite all that we love the rockschool program and have booked an examiner for 3 days solid at our school in June... cheers guys.
From another very experienced teacher, I totally agree with your feedback. There's no chance for improvising, developing a theme, ad lib etc. in any of the tracks. G5 to G6 acoustic is a HUGE jump. At G6 an altered scale is shown in the technical section - but with no use of applying it in the songs.
