That is an astute observation about "planner season". I find this really stress-inducing and frustrating. Obviously from a selling standpoint, it is the perfect time to market. But every year I feel like the "year end" anticipation happens earlier and earlier to the point where there are still months of the year left but we are suddenly declaring it over. This seems to happens with so much!!! I often feel like why can't we be in the moment. For me the perfect time to reflect on the year and focus on the new year is in the new year(?). All this anticipatory nostalgia/reflection gets to me more and more every year.
I also felt the same about the deterministic nature of the year ahead. I did my first one for 2023 and it was good practice, but then it immediately filled me with dread. So I had to kind of distance myself from it. I looked back at it over summer and then last week to make sense of it. How the cards came up was not at all how I thought it would at the start of the year.
I look back to my Year Spread at a turning of the Wheel dates. I usually look at reflection of the past months, what did these cards highlight during the past season or turning I briefly look at the coming season and don't predict but just briefly reflect on them
This year I chose 1 card consciously and pulled 1 at random. They both played an important part in my year. I plan on doing the same for 2024. It gives me something to ponder during the year.
Great chat on a favourite topic this time of year. ❤ I am not sure what my year ahead forecast spread will look like but it won't be a card per month; I may try drawing a few things (an ogham, etc) per season instead as a kind of support for that season. I have never done any intensive statistics tracking because I fear, like Lisa, it wouldn't give me much useful information, but I do write down my daily draws so I *could* go back and generate those stats if I wanted. This year I'm using a Hobonichi Techo Planner for daily reflections + memory keeping, a Kinbor Weeks for getting me where I need to be, and a Honeycomb almanac for astrology and weather observation.
This series has been a great support and companion to my process of building my practice! It feels so reassuring to see you both talk about your practices and very relatable struggles. Tysm, Dawn and Lisa! Look forward to every new ep!
I do my card for the month as I go along in the year as part of my monthly spread so I’m not thinking ahead about all the cards too much because I know what my brain is like! I do a different type of year ahead reading which looks at work, relationship, family, health etc instead. Love listening to all your thoughts both of you 🥰
Not all year ahead spreads pull one card for each month. Katey Flowers had a wonderful year ahead spread that addressed areas of life so to speak. I find it much more beneficial for me to do this rather than try to come back to it each month and then worry or retrofit it to apply it.
I started tracking in May with my daily&weekly pulls. I’ve been interested in what I haven’t pulled so far: 6 -cup cards, 2 pentacle cards, 4 cards in both the swords and wands. Also 6 major Arcana cards. Tied for the most times pulled are the 4 of pentacles reversed and the 9 of swords. I did a birthday year ahead which ran month to month starting in July on my birthday. I don’t really feel like it lined up, so I won’t do it again, but I might do a year ahead in January. Where the card of the month will be my deep dive card.
I use the year ahead spread to look at what energy will I be working with that month and what can I learn from that energy. I also, in addition to that, pull an additional card for how I can work with my word of the year (my intention) in that particular month.
Two beautiful kind souls! Love your videos together. One of the things I struggled with regarding tarot journaling and even creating my own book of shadows is I felt like it needed to be very detailed, specifically my artsy, mixed media brain felt like every page needed to be a work of art. Bad mindset as it really hindered my journaling process and so now I’ve let go of that mindset and since then tarot journaling/planning has become fun again, lol. Always a good time watching the both of you as your passion truly does radiate off of you two. Hope you have a great rest of the weekend!
just started pulling daily tarot cards (past/present/future) & tracking the cards. I find it interesting to see how the cards move through past/present & future positions. For a completely objective year reading I use "Cards of Destiny" - Robert Lee Camp (playing cards/astrological) system.
Regarding tracking your cards, I only find it mildly useful when doing a specific challenge. In October I did a Shadow work challenge. Looking back at what all showed up was interesting. I don't really read predictively beyond, "what energies are affecting things?" I also struggle with practical application and what I need to actually DO. I am AuDHD, so year-ahead spreads itch the part of my brain that says time is a bullshit human concept. That may be the potential energy of next December NOW, but a lot can happen between now and next December.
Loving this series and talking about my 2 favourite things - planning and tarot. My year ahead spread is based on areas of life and lessons rather than a card per month. I've loved looking back on it throughout the year.
Love seeing you both together yet again. Love this series. Thank you both so very much for sharing the personal way to do it all. Its always so interesting and gives me so many idea to try. I don't do the year ahead spread. I live in the moment. I find I get the most out of everything I do with Tarot if I am in the mood which is most days. But there are days I just can't find the time as life is life. But that's a really good thing in the end as when the days in the week that I do get to stop and enjoy me time with my decks etc. I really jump in and enjoy the spreads and my decks etc. I also use my tarot time to catch up with you girls and see what your up to over that week on you tube. Thats always fun. I have been doing doing the decan walk with Marlene and it been so interesting to me how very week it has lined up so much with whats going on in my life. My sister is doing it also. Same thing her life is so different to mine yet the decan cards have taken form in her life also. My sister and I are doing it together and its been awesome to see the decan in different forms still coming to life in our lives in such different way. I am actually very surprised how spot on it has been. Terri From Australia 🦘 🇦🇺 💜
I'm really enjoying this series and this conversation was no exception! Thank you, lovely ladies! Re the card tracking, we had a workshop on it in the TABI summer conference. The person who gave the workshop showed her month by month breakdowns through a particular year and she was able to connect them with the themes that were happening in her life throughout that year. It was super interesting! It inspired me to keep track of my cards though I haven't looked at that data yet. I will definitely be following her lead in doing it month by month.
I stopped doing Tarot Year Ahead readings because it would affect my mood and possibly increase anxiety and depression. Plus, by the end of the year, I found it wasn't as accurate. I am interested in possibly trying the energetic year ahead with Oracle cards. Might end up trying that. I've been considering figuring out a seasonal readings practice, considering the Solstices and Equinoxes. Still working on figuring that out. But I struggle with manifesting what I see in the cards, so I don't do day ahead readings either. And I so resonate with where I am at the beginning of the year isn't anywhere close to where I'm at at the end of the year. I'm all over the place too, even within a month things shift and change with how I work with the cards and what interests me. Probably due to ADHD, literally. 😊 Fantasy self vs. Reality self... I SO resonate either that! I also find that trying to start stuff in January doesn't often really work. I believe it's because the time of year energetically is winter, hibernation, resting, slow, etc. I think that's why a lot of New Year's resolutions fail. We're trying to start stuff when energetically it is the worst time of year to start. Better to think, dream, and plan and then try to start in the Spring, when it is energetically the time of new beginnings and growth. I resonate so much with "How can I simplify?" Fantasy me wants to do ALL the things. Reality me deals with chronic illness and literally physically and mentally just can't do all the things. I so often want to add more when I'm already not "keeping up" with what really works for me. I can't even plan things out for the month, because with ADHD, what I'm interested in changes from week to week. I literally filmed a month's worth of Tarot related videos and halfway through the month I felt absolutely ZERO desire to post what I'd made because I was no longer interested in what I'd filmed. For general planning, I tend to have a weekly "need to do" and "want to do list" and a few trackers for things like my cat's medicine and some of my own meds. I dont tend to plan by day because what I'm able to do varies day by day due to chronic illness. If I try to plan day by day, it will get derailed by my health and then I feel like a failure and get overwhelmed by not doing it when I said I would. I've been trying to figure out how to plan my video content creation and tried a few things and they haven't worked. Next for me to try is a list of the general types of videos I want to do and rotate through that list WITHOUT planning frequency or when I'm going to film/post them, again due to how my health varies day to day due to chronic illness. I've also got a list of hashtag VR's I want to do. I need to use paper planning for to do lists or I'll never look at them. But my calendar of events is digital on my phone. Fantasy me wants to do decorative planning, but anything more than a bit of color here and there overwhelms my ADHD brain. But I do need some color or it's not enough to keep my attention. Oh Moon Readings... I struggled for YEARS with trying to do readings on the exact day and FAILED, usually because of health issues. Recently, I decided to try again BUT to do a New or Full Moon reading at some point the week of the New or Full Moon. That is starting to work for me. "It's not homework..." 💖💖💖 I definitely have to be in the right headspace for a reading. Plus, I deal with a LOT of brain fog where I literally just cannot do a reading because of my brain fog. My brain just won't process, so I get nothing out of the readings.
I do year ahead spreads and track every card I pull, and I love both practices! I use the year ahead more as an interesting data point and don’t get hung up on negative cards, but I do reflect back on what it meant at the end of the month. Same for tracking cards, I look to see trends and what was going on in my life then. It’s been incredibly helpful during a really hard year!
What a great discussion! I track my card pulls in my bullet journal but I don't do anything with it except think "huh, interesting" when i tally them up at the end of a month.
I do a year ahead spread every year. I always use a new deck to me to get to know it better. I do my year ahead spread and then forget about it. Until the end of each month. This year I added another deck based on one of your early videos either at the end of last year or early this year. I let my deck pick the deck I pull from in the video. It has worked fantastic this year. Will probably continue this next year. So, thank you for the inspiration. Hope to see u get back into year ahead spreads. U can check out my year ahead spread for 2023 playlist to see each month and how I did it.
I do my year spreads more in context of what to work on in that month, less of predicting way. Since I have bad memory I dont remember cards ahead, but I sit on each of the cards at the start and at the end of the month to see how to work with certain card and what lessons I collected through the month. My only problem is that whatever deck I use for Year ahead spread tends to not be used that year, like it has energy of this reading and that's it
Definitely do a year ahead spread. I usually write 1 or 2 sentences about how I feel about the card as I'm doing the reading. Then in my Tarot journal I transfer each card over per month and use it as a heads up energy and then reflect on it at the end of each month. I hope that makes sense. Like the weather report analogy Lisa talked about. I love my year ahead spreads. And I couldn't live without a planner though I'm going to simplify this year and not have 5 different places I write stuff down.
Such a great discussion on planning. I realize it's not meeting scheduled tasks leads to a downfall rather in doing the Hallowquest this year I set the primary goal of reading the Lesson on the week it was due. I would annotate the lesson in a notebook as I read. as far as the actionable it runs the gamut but I would read it and do the spread and try my best to move through and get the lay of the land. Now this coming year I have a much better perspective to layer on the journey I already walked. this has worked for me and was not pressure so I had to bail out from not being able to do every little thing because it is a really a lot to delve into
This was a wonderful conversation ladies. 2023 was the first year out of the last 4 years that I didn't do a year ahead spread. I decided it just wasn't benefiting me anymore. I would do what you do Dawn and manifest even when I wasn't trying to because I know myself. So for me that practice isn't beneficial however I know a lot of people that it is very beneficial for them. I might try it this upcoming year in a different way. Like what should I be creativity focusing on in each month or something like that. I feel like that will be more productive for me and my personality. I'm not really big on doing any kind of predictive readings for myself because once I do something like that I cannot just leave it alone......lol (Virgo Moon) I don't even like doing daily's like that, I would prefer more to do a evening draw to see a reflection of the days energies. I just want to be as organic in my practice and life as I can be. I agree also with taking on so much and then later realizing I have bitten off more than I can chew...LOL I love this series. Thank you for sharing ladies! 😍😍😍
I don't do a year ahead spread but I am planning on tracking my card for the year that I will review weekly (ish) while the events are fresh in my mind. For me I just want to see the different ways the card is supporting me during the year.
I’m loving this series! ❤ I love my year ahead spread and view it the way Lisa shares. Lisa, I’m curious about your digital journal system! Is there a video we can find about it? I’ll check it out on your page but was curious! ❤
I do the year ahead reading but with a Lenormand deck, I expand on it throughout the year, but in moon cycles and not in months. I see it as more of a general energy instead of a prediction. I do most of my planning in December and use January as the test drive. Then I decide what was good and what wasn’t and adapt accordingly. My decks are chosen for the upcoming cycle depending on my mood. As for tracking data, I track everything, even what moon phase in what zodiac sign on what cards. Is there a big pattern? No there isn’t but I’m so used to it now that I do it without thinking about it 😂
Its so interesting listening to your opinions on year ahead spreads. I was thinking of incorporating it this year. I haven't done one in a few years. I was thinking of using the Nameless One Tarot to work with the sigil each month with a little bit of tarot added.

I say that every month to my members hehe. ❤️

Such a great chat! I love this series so much! I have never done a year ahead spread or done tracking. I fly by the seat of my pants.
I do the year ahead reading but with a Lenormand deck, I expand on it throughout the year, but in moon cycles and not in months. I see it as more of a general energy instead of a prediction. Homework Gang!
😂😂
Its so interesting listening to your opinions on year ahead spreads. I was thinking of incorporating it this year. I haven't done one in a few years. I was thinking of using the Nameless One Tarot to work with the sigil each month with a little bit of tarot added.
I think I might give one a go again too for 2024!
