    Always seen these around and had no idea about that premise, thanks for the interesting conversation!

      I went in fairly blind, some very cool ideas in this one.

    That is not what I thought Pern was about! Sounds interesting! Also, thanks for introducing me to Secretfirebooks

      It wasn't what I expected either, very good and influential.

    I've had a bind up of the first three novels sitting on my shelf for years and years. I've always wanted to read them but just haven't got around to it. Sounds interesting. Maybe 2025 is the year. Great discussion, guys!

      I was the same, always sort of interested in reading this, glad I finally did. It's worth checking out.

    Nice review fellas! I knew this was science fantasy (my favorite genre) but often passed over it because of the generic sounding title. You really talked it up and it sounds better than I thought!
    Also my girlfriend overheard me watching the video and wants me to add that The Crystal Singer is also good.

      Crystal Singer is entertaining. The Pern story is a very well-built world. But as a friend of mine concluded, you can get Perned out? And there are prequels and sequels that really expand that world setting.

    Pretty cool!
    I've always heard these were good, but I always heard that from people who read a lot of stuff that I didn't like.
    These were also really big fan favorites in their day, and not considered YA at the time - so it is really great that two adult guys are reviewing them!
    I'm glad to hear good things about them, there are a lot of Old-Timers who get rid of their collections and all the Dragon Riders books end up getting pushed to one side. I hope you guys can stir up some renewed love for these.

    Maybe I'd be more inclined to read fantasy if it has its roots firmly in science fiction like this one does. Great discussion guys! Just subscribed to Tim.

      MacCaffrey blended SF and fantasy really well in this one. Worth checking out.

    Nice! I was looking forward to this since after learning about it on the PBS Judy Del Ray short. I was surprised to hear that it was any kind of sci-fi as it looks 100 percent fantasy and like you mention it has some YA vibes going on. Excellent insightful breakdown. I'm looking forward to my turn when we do the Black Cloud! Just let me know when you want to knock it out, Ira.

      Yeah, I think a lot of people get a YA fantasy vide and while it has some of that it's also very SF and worth checking out. As for Black Cloud, how does late January or early February sound?

    Good to see you both liked it. It is interesting to see what people reading it for the first time think of it. You are right, in the 70's - 80's it was incandescently good and completely new!
    Having read them through in the order of publication I was staggered to hear people are talking about 'trilogies'. I guess I can see why; the main protagonists are similar whereas the order of publication will give you new central characters. I would read Dragonquest next, sure, if you are going to continue but I think if you read The White Dragon before Drangonsong and Dragonsinger you might feel like you are missing a lot of information.

      I read White Dragon first, and yes, there were a few things I was confused about, but not a whole lot. It was a good starting point for me.

    I have read all of Anne Mac's Dragon books, and a lot of others. However, Todd is not that good a writer, I am not sympathetic to his people. I'm sure there are writers out there who would do a better job, but they can't. I know I'm not the only one who thinks she 'gave' Todd the Dragon books because he sort of had a built in fan base.
    Now for the funny story, because so much of my life is full of them. For a while I had a totally blind roommate. I had picked up some of Anne's last books... and they weren't that good either... so, she heard me and my other roommate talking about my getting them. She then asked if she could borrow them after I was done. I said: "They are print books." But she didn't really listen so I had to repeat myself. But I always found that funny that a totally blind person asking to borrow a print book...

    • @sfwordsofwonder
      @sfwordsofwonder  27 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That is a funny story, did you ever read stories to her?

    • @ElicBehexan
      @ElicBehexan 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@sfwordsofwonder no, she was so proud of these stories she was writing... My other roommate, who was also visually impaired but could see some, had said that if we could get into a format we could all read, since she didn't do braille and that's how the stories were written. I got home from work, she had asked the day before if we could have her read to me so I could type, and we started with her prologue. When we got to the end, I asked if we would ever see any of these people again. She said 'no.' I then asked how was she expecting anyone to get attached to her main character if we know she'd dead in the prologue. She sat there and rocked. I suggested she dump the prologue. The next day she read me the first chapter... I wasn't going to fight the 'baby talk' because the kid was quite young, but they have flying cars - of which she's very proud. I said - the idea of flying cars goes back to the early days of SF. Besides, why didn't the ambulance fly? She sat and rocked, then said: "Because it is bad for a heart patient?" I pointed out that getting to the hospital faster is more important. And then the sister of the baby talking brother comes home and they are, basically waiting for her to die. I asked: if they have flying cars surely they have advanced medicine. She said: "It was too expensive."..... I told her that my friend who I was doing home health with, was a FILE CLERK at the University in town and SHE has insurance. If he's so important that he has a secretary (and why did you give her a name if we never see her again) than he is more than important enough to have insurance. She then proposed it was something they couldn't fix. I told her I had heard on NPR earlier in the week about how they had regrown part of a dog's tail... surely if they have flying cars, they have that ability as well. So, she said we had done enough, closed her book and left. I saved the file, folded up the folding chair she had been sitting on and went into the other roommate and told her all about it. I had told her about the prologue from the day before and how I suggested she ditch it. I then went in and told her about this. A few days later I asked if she wanted to continue, she said 'no.' and that was the end of that mess. So, by the time of the books, we weren't so friendly anymore. I evicted her about 8 months later.
