  • Erik has added a few choice mods that COMPLETELY transformed his 1990 Mazda FC RX-7 since the last time we reviewed it. Namely, a 4.88 final drive, manual steering rack, Cusco 1.5 way LSD, and Spoon rigid collars. Turn up the sound!

    I do miss My FC's, they are skyrocketing in prices like the FD's have. That car would scream with a mild TII setup. Nice to see people tastefully taking care of these for a change when we typically see these turn into drift missles.

      A turbo is exactly what it doesn't need, and this coming from an FD owner. High revving NA has it's own character, and much better throttle response. I wish my FD was NA 13B.

      @touchedbyawankel ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @verdict1163 I've had many RX7's, most were FCs so I know exactly what you are talking about. I just prefer turbos. An NA 13b will only take you so far (restricted by physics) and a reliable turbo build is amazing in these light cars. I had a GTU with a TII swap that weighed in around 2400 lbs and was probably my best handling and fun to drive RX7s. The suspension setup was similar to this car in the video, so that's why I made my comment. You can see the power holding back the fun factor in this video. You don't need much, just more than NA can provide for hill climbs. FBs are different animals altogether. I've been building these tlfor 20+ years. In the end, it's all personal preference, mine is just turbo.

      @@touchedbyawankel Nice man, yeah I'm the owner. I also have an FD and wanted to build something that was different than that. More raw, great throttle response, more fun at low speed, etc. Redlining it everywhere is pretty addictive. Not saying it couldn't use more power but since the engine has been super reliable and pretty low miles I don't plan on doing much to it until its time for a rebuild. Then a street port to gain a little more up top would be in order.

      @touchedbyawankel ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Samurai6936 Definitely addicting with the revs of NA. This is where a 20B NA is perfect for your setup but still very expensive and unobtainable for most. NA rotaries will last a very long time when cared for, and like you said, Reliable.

    Always preferred the FC over the FD. The "944 ripoff" styling just speaks to me in a way the FD's does not.

    I love these owner modified interaction vids. The discussion in terms of build philosophy, owner driving input, and your impressions gives a whole other experience. Great job Fenton. If you ever come to Southern Oregon, LMK. I'd love to hear your impressions of the ongoing upgrades on my SR20 510. To name a few new ones, T3 duel adjustable coilovers, GTX 2867R gen2 turbo making 378 RWHP, an Exedi stage 4 clutch & flywheel, and a JBC rack conversion. The lil Datsun Yellow Jacket is a whole new beast.

    That was really cool to see you drive this on my favorite road. The road from 7:24 gave me a good idea of how well this car would do. She looks very capable and planted! It’s just too bad the FC’s price skyrocketed. A quicker rack and better coilovers might be the icing on the cake. Nonetheless, a proper build! Really dig it. Analog feel and old school styling. 👌👍

    I really want a white non-turbo FC, but I'm learning that they're not what I envisioned. I thought it would be an angry flagship sports car. But to hear what the factory power was, the tall gearing, the open diff... it'd be a BUILD. And idk if I'm equipped to do a build.

    • @ThrottleJerk
      @ThrottleJerk 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Equipped? Its the easiest thing to work on you only need regular tools and a place to work on it. Everything is straightforward. When people say Honda's are easy to work on, it's cause they never worked on an fc

    • @JETZcorp
      @JETZcorp 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ThrottleJerk The "place to work on it" is the problem. If I had a garage where I could do things without getting snowed on, I wouldn't mind it. Time as well; I get one-day weekends. You'll find there's nothing on Earth easier to work on than a 2-stroke motorcycle, and even that has just been parked because I don't have the time or space to give it what it needs.

      Problem with that is the increased force needed to turn the wheel (Especially with sticky tires) which is why I went for the OEM Mazda 20:1 manual ratio. I gave up quickness for feel. Heck, there are 15:1 OEM FC ratios out there but I wanted that road feel. Perhaps on an AE86 its not as hard to turn due to lighter weight.

    • @coldvaper
      @coldvaper ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Samurai6936 perhaps but I don’t think the weight of the car will mean that much once moving especially since FCs aren’t that heavy.

    What a nice build! Believe it or not Ive owned over 30 FCs. This chassis is meant to corner and to spark driver emotion not extreme speed. If you know how to drive it smoothly you can out corner most cars on the downhill sections with late braking ;)
