Exactly. No matter if he got the ball high post or low post he terrorized defenses with his skill set and quick decision making. It’s because he was like another Kobe. When Kobe talked shit to some of his teammates they tend to get intimidated or back down, but Pau was different. He rose to Kobe’s challenge and became someone who Kobe couldn’t just boss around, he became Kobe’s second option. I saw an interview of Kevin Garnett years ago where in he claimed that Pau was just another “Soft European White Boy”. They used to bully and body him all the time. But after the Celtics beat the Lakers in 2008, something changed in Gasol and they couldn’t just push him around after that. That is why when the Lakers beat the Celtics in 2010, it was a sweet moment. They got their revenge.
Apart from being the perfect complement, the reason is the European training and its cultural generation. In Spain he was educated with the values of companionship and team play. He grew up as a player, but his ego and other bad "team play" attitudes did not. He was already a star but he always knew how to be a person, an IQ above average too and a leader who knew that he needed the team and fought with that to win The other part was put by Kobe, it must be remembered that he lived in Italy as a young man, he understood that mentality and form in the same way, and he knew how to see and help Pau in the process. He was the leader instead of looking for personal bombast from him, he struggled to improve the team.
