Maddie_latte Lunar no they can still get sore hawks on rat wire it doesn’t matter what type of wire it is it can still cause sore hawks please don’t spread misinformation about rabbit care there is already enough out there and thousands of rabbits are suffering from sore hawks and no rabbit deserves to be on wire bottom cages.
@Oreo The bun I was wandering about that. When I were a child my kin had wire floor. I didn't want to build it like that but I understand it is convenient for collecting "chocolate eggs." What do you suppose is a fair compromise? Just sweep out? Wood slats spaced apart? Thanks.
This is the best one I have seen. The roof should be tilted like a roof. They reproduce every 28 days! I had my 11 …5 different breeds. Since they reproduce every 28 days we finally had each male fixed and put one male in with each female. The last two lived 17 and 18 years. I gave them two drops of liquid Ivermectin in their water every 4 months for parasites. I used the same for goats, rabbits and dogs too. Last goat was 17. We had the bunny Hotel built same as your only with a roof like a house with singles and nest boxes were put in the back of each section and it didn’t take up any of their room in their front area. We had each box with an open front and about 16 inches high and about 11 or so inches wide opening with a hinged top for removing hay and being able to get to the inside box from the back of each separation. The pellets poop went through the 1/2 inch wire and we used it for years in the flower gardens. We used the same water bottles and used alfalfa hay, peanut hay and clover exclusively. A slice of apple every three weeks for a treat and that was all except for some balls to play with that they couldn’t crew up. Also branches from the oak tree and from the peach tree for their TOOTH HEALTH.
Everyone thinks its the wire that hurts their hocks, but if you research it you will find people who work in rabbit rescues saying that rabbits that live on *flat bottom* cages, plastic, plywood, or concrete are the ones that get the worst sore hocks- because when they pee or their water spills they get their feet wet and the flat surface makes it so feer stay damp all the time- it leads to fungus and bacteria growing on the bottom of their feet. The wire makes it so their feet stay dry and that's important. It has to be the thick gauge wire though, thin wire will hurt their feet. Rabbits with big well-furred feet that have the right gauge of wire will not get sore hocks. Also, those rabbits live in a hot climate- the wire gives them ventilation and cool air.
I think that either are good depending on your weather conditions and other reoson s for my rabbits they have area with wood and an area with wire the small size wholes will not cause sore hocks my rabbits poop and pee on the side with wire and have a hiding house and for their play area a it's half mesh wire half wood they spend more time on wire in summer and more time on wood in winter
Great and simple build! I do want to add one thought that I hope everyone reads and learns from my mistake. I have a male and female rabbit. They were former 4H projects that I keep for their manure. It is great for gardening, as it does not have to break down before applying. They bred through the wire!!!! I have them in a two bay hutch and they successfully bred through the wire!!! I installed two 1×6 to separate them after they bred through the wire. But, while the wood cuts down on the airflow, it may keep them from breeding. Where there is a will there is a way and our two rabbits found a way. Keep this in mind as you build your hutches.
Rob Hatcher thanks for the heads up. I wonder if two layers of cloth would work on each side of the 1x2. That should give you a nominal inch of room without reducing airflow in any meaningful way
Should have two separated layers of wire mesh underfoot. With only the one layer you have a predator will eat the feet off the rabbits from below. I have seen this, and its is terrible.
That is too terrible for words! I think I'm going to make a fence around the legs in addition to the double wires. I don't even want predators looking at my bunnies! It must be so scary to have someone that wants to eat you staring up at your belly.
My momma bunny had health issues and sadly, she died but I have my buck and sold all but two of her sons. They are in 3 separate hutches. I will soon be building an entirely new hutch and will get a new doe as soon as we settle the land a little bit. Im super excited to get into breeding again! Thank u for head’s up on spacing issues. I plan to build one long hutch this time.
Make sure you provide your rabbits with a tile, some linoleum or plywood at least because their little feet will develop painful sores on their hawks. These sores can be very prone to infection and cost a lot of money to care for. Check out the house rabbit society I highly encourage you let your rabbits have fun around your home! They’re great pets for families I have one myself.
Put a piece of paneling under hutch at an angle down to a gutter to a bucket to catch droppings for garden or flower bed, etc. Or whatever design works for you.
I'm about to re-build / upgrade our Holland Lop starter-rabbitry...and came across your hutch design! It's exactly what we need! Do you have the sizes and/or blueprints for this?? I need them, especially since I am limited with my tools.
You probably already mentioned it but...Yay! Lilac had a productive birth. So good to know. For the next hutch you may want to look at using cedar for some of the lumber. It will weather better and shouldn't warp as bad in the humidity. It is also naturally bug resistant. I like the raised hutch a lot. It looks as though keeping the bunnies clean, dry and safe is so much easier this way. You could also look at pouring a slab or laying concrete pavers below the hutch to make cleanup even easier, perhaps with galvanized tubs or plastic barrels cut in half lengthwise for collecting droppings below. Just some thoughts. Keep up the good work, my friend. Looks great!
Love update I added a Murphy shelf in the back of my buck rabbit cage they jump to the top and lays on it. when I am ready to breed my doe I left up the Murphy shelf to stop the jumping around durning breeding
Was it you who said you opened it up for more space in another video but couldnt for all the hutches? What hutch size is preferable for a doe with kits to have enough room?
Was wondering how you cut your corrugated metal roof to size, just finished a really similar model but using 4 8 ft recycled (we call it) lamina. Great job by the way, looks really good
Well thank you!!! I think I tried using a circular saw....and that was a terrible choice. Then I believe I just used a handsaw. Might have even been a drywall saw. Man I honestly can not remember....and that was the one part that I didn’t film!! Or MAYBE I didn’t cut it at all. You stumped me!!!! I am very sorry.
Nice video... I find it works well to put shelf platforms in my cages to increase the actual space AND the exercise more jumping up and down from the shelves.
Great video! I am building my own hutch and was wondering if you could use pressure treated wood for the bottom frame. It wouldn't seem likely for bunnys to be able to chew that wood when it's covered by a fine wire but I wanted to make sure. Thx!

Hiya! I'm new to your channel via the "Can One Family Make a Difference" video, and checked this one out because I'm really needing a new rabbit set-up. The one I have is makeshift, and really inefficient (I'm the Queen of The Jury-Rig, which is fine in the short-term, but, as Nick Fouch of Fouch Family Off-Grid says, "Temporary is always longer than you think!"). May I suggest that you build UP for Lilac? And indeed, for Blue. You have a lot of vertical space that you could use by building a platform across the back. It just needs to be big enough for her to rest, and so wouldn't interfere with your ability to work in there: and if you make it so the doe can get up but the youngsters can't, she can get the break from her babies that all moms need! You could put pellets there too, possibly, so she doesn't have to compete for food. I hope this helps! And thanks for doing what you do. And, Justin and his family really ARE fabulous aren't they? If you’re wanting more room in those you should consider building a small loft space in each area! Love your design and am considering a similar set up. I love the idea of adding a little loft though! If you’re worried about anyone falling off you could even use the wire to enclose the loft space and just keep the stairs/ladder area open for access 😜
Love all your videos.. I’m having trouble finding the 1/2”x1” vinyl coated wire mesh.. Where can I find it?? I’ve tried tractor supply, Lowes, Amazon and Home Depot..
I wanted to contribute a idea for some to consider. Could the rabbit hutch be part of a green house growing operation? When it is cold or cool (in northern climes) the rabbits may be able to heat the green house and their manure could fertilize the plants. The rabbit manure might also generate heat for the green house. What do you think?
I like your hutch, what I really you made separate panels. Then you put your wire on the inside. Your would will last longer, the rabbits can’t chew on the wood. And you can easily change your panels if you need too.
How long do you leave babies with mom??? My babies are eating and drinking but mom seems aggressive at times, so I've put them in separate hutch they are 5 weeks old.
What was the hardware cloth you wished you'd used instead? We loooove your design. Will be building something similar soon, and wasnt sure of what to use on the bottom/ sides and top??
As I mentioned above, if you can...use 2x4x10' for your four main beams...vs the 2x4x8' beams he used. It'll give you 30" bays vs 24". Every little bit helps!
My husband is getting ready to build one but with 2 floors and 2 bays (until the boy gets fixed) for 2 bunnies. The bottom will wired and the top covered. It’ll be 6 feet wide but can’t remember how tall. Hope it’s big enough. Planning on putting shingles and the floors will be plywood. Someone mention tile or linoleum, We might do that to.
I unfortunately lost a doe when her babies got a little too big, even though her bay was fairly large. I'll be building a separate grow out hutch to give the mom a break next time. This video was inspiration for my hutch design, so thanks for making it.
Awesome job man! May I suggest you add some chipboard or something to the floor as the chicken wire can cause issues with the rabbits paws! I had to take mine to the vet because of this sadly!
Do you think you could make a video on building a small 2 rabbit breeding hutch? I want to breed very small scale and can only keep 1 male and 1 female.
I like everything about this but the wire bottom because it can cause sore hocks and that’s bad otherwise it’s a good hutch but you should still free roam them separately
If anyone here who says to add plywood to the floor truly don't know what their talking about. Flat hard floor pushes their claws up and puts a lot of weight on their heels. In the wild their claws go on the dirt to help keep their feet flat. The wire let's their claws hang down and not put pressure on their heels. Wood can be worse on their feet than the wire. This is why you put a resting pad on the wire to give them breaks.
I'd suggest using 2x4x10' instead of 2x4x8' for your main four beams. That gives roughly 30" bays, instead of 24. It's only 6", but it makes a difference. That's how I did mine.
You could have built a separate cage for the buck, and opened the two quarters leavening the middle to separate the two females and their babies. I’m building a single for the buck now and will build a larger for the females and babies. 12ft separated in the middle.
Wow I'm in Houston as well such a small world. Edit: I also use the same white corrugated plastic and I hate it. I rigged it up the same as you did but it keeps warping and sometimes rain eventually does fall through. So if you do find anything better, I would love to know.
1 inch by 2 inch in the bottom for sure for weight and droppings to fall out easier . Will use your design for my Flemish giants except my hutch will be 4 feet by 5 feet each side for my doe and buck ..
Yeah, of course you built it for comfort for you. The wire on their feet is going to hurt them and you better give them playtime/time out of their cage, because they need more space to stretch. I didn't come here to hate or anything I didn't know they were living on wires.
He does not have to give them time out of the cage, the wire doee not bother their feet that bad. I raise rabbits in all wire cages of course i used 1/2×1 for floor but they never come out of the cage. Only time any of my rabbits get out of the cage time is the day the 12 week olds get butchered.
They have almost no shielding from rain. I live in the eastern USA so idk what the weather is like out there, but here we get rain all the time. My rabbits live in wood hutches with wood flooring. So I’m not judging just questioning
Great video!!! Love your bunnies they are cute. I’m going to try this hutch out I have been looking for a good idea for one and I like this one best. Do you have a material list for this hutch?
The recommended wire for a rabbit floor is the 14 gauge double galvanized 1/2" x 1" wire. A resting mat is a must. For the larger meat rabbit doe's I would go with the inside of cage at least 30" W x 36"L x 18" + H.
Sorry I am in Houston. If I heard right your from around the area. I am looking for a male and female rabbit but looking for a specific breed, can you help?
I would be thinking of rather than 4 bays I would make it 2. Then make a second one for a buck and another doe. 3×4' is a good size for a doe with a litter. But eventually you want a grow out pen for kits. That can be one or 2 large pens
Fast forward 2021, with doubts about the survival of the economy/country... very useful for those who need to prepare for self-sufficiency.
😂😂 pretty much sums up why I’m here.
With cages that tall, you could add shelves halfway up on the back half to give a but more space.
I would recommend putting wood on their floors so that your rabbits don’t get sore hawks.
Ava small Vlogs and fun exactly what I said
They don’t get them with the rat wire
Maddie_latte Lunar no they can still get sore hawks on rat wire it doesn’t matter what type of wire it is it can still cause sore hawks please don’t spread misinformation about rabbit care there is already enough out there and thousands of rabbits are suffering from sore hawks and no rabbit deserves to be on wire bottom cages.

Bobby Mo just sweep it out it is so worth it for your rabbits.

Both wrong
flyingrabbit I think wire flooring but with memory foam or bathmats and then if they get dirty you can easily replace them
That would work maybe a peice of plywood as well for extra protection
Rex rabbits have thin foot fur so usually they are known to need a resting spot even on normal rabbit cagewire.
Great and simple build! I do want to add one thought that I hope everyone reads and learns from my mistake. I have a male and female rabbit. They were former 4H projects that I keep for their manure.
So if you do find anything better, I would love to know.
asphalt shingles? it works great on my rabbit hutch, and it lasts like 30 years
I love Rabbits
Yay, us too!!
Where did you buy those purple cap water bottles at .
Tractor Supply. 😀
its a very beautiful cage
Hi.... Thank you 🎥👍👍👍
Nice video! I’m thinking of breading my own rabbits and I also live in Houston. Great information
Awesome!!!! You will LOVE IT!
Have you dealt with flies? I was thinking about using screen on my rabbit hutch.
As long as poop is falling out of bottom you shouldn't have to worry about flies
1 inch by 2 inch in the bottom for sure for weight and droppings to fall out easier . Will use your design for my Flemish giants except my hutch will be 4 feet by 5 feet each side for my doe and buck ..
You should have the amount and size of lumber in your video description.
Sorry.
We made 2 3 by 4 cages fo our otters. They live the luxury
What you do if rain ☔
There’s a roof. But also I have sometimes hung old blankets during heavy storms what’s better is building nest boxes on the back.
Sound good. I like your idea it's awosome. Love it❤❤❤
I would do this one but I have to wean my rabbits since they're breeding 1 for mom 1 for dad 1 do baby girls 1 for baby boys
Why do you separate doe kits and buck kits? Not being critical; I didn't know that was necessary. How come?
Michael Ritchey so they don’t breed since their siblings it’s bad
Yeah, of course you built it for comfort for you. The wire on their feet is going to hurt them and you better give them playtime/time out of their cage, because they need more space to stretch. I didn't come here to hate or anything I didn't know they were living on wires.
He does not have to give them time out of the cage, the wire doee not bother their feet that bad. I raise rabbits in all wire cages of course i used 1/2×1 for floor but they never come out of the cage. Only time any of my rabbits get out of the cage time is the day the 12 week olds get butchered.
I remember when you first posted some of this build. Just wanted to say hello & nice work.
Billie! So good to hear from you. I hope you're well! We think of you often--kelly
Plz have a giant run plzzzzzz
Not that your craftmanship is bad, youre really good at what youre doing, but this isnt nearly enough space for a rabbit to run around.
Don't worry they're not gonna be alive long.
They’re meat and fur rabbits. They don’t need to run around much.
can u send me all measurements and items to buy so i can build this!!
How can I get one of these bunny’s ?
Where are you from? You can look for a local breeder of what breed you want, Craigslist, or maybe a shelter
The recommended wire for a rabbit floor is the 14 gauge double galvanized 1/2" x 1" wire. A resting mat is a must. For the larger meat rabbit doe's I would go with the inside of cage at least 30" W x 36"L x 18" + H.
Do they not chew the wood??
Just seeing this now, well done!! Thank you for sharing.
Where did you get your rabbits?
Sorry I am in Houston. If I heard right your from around the area. I am looking for a male and female rabbit but looking for a specific breed, can you help?
Does your rabbit chew the wood?
Beatiful rabits friend
Never put a roof screw on the valey, the correct way is in the top crest. OsoYolo, Antigua Guatemala. Galvanize Roof Experience.
Yup, you are 100% correct. I was wrong and I learned from it. 👍🏻
@@BetterTogetherLife Thank you, I learned from you. Love U back for a better world.
I would be thinking of rather than 4 bays I would make it 2. Then make a second one for a buck and another doe. 3×4' is a good size for a doe with a litter. But eventually you want a grow out pen for kits. That can be one or 2 large pens
Could you send me measurements on this
