Low Budget Shoulder Plane

  • Hello everyone,
Another installment in my series on cheap hand planes. I don't have any experience with shoulder planes but I thought you might like to get a good look at this one.
I screwed up with the protractor in this video. The angle of the Stanley is about 40 degrees and the wood plane is 32. That's the angle from the sole to the top of the cutting angle on the blade.

Folks without chisel skills have to buy all kinds of kookiness.

I've had way more luck with a hand sharpened chisel than setting up and getting a plane to do what I want.
The block plane comes in handy though.
Rabet plane is fast too in some circumstances.

@@burtreynolds3143 chisels are better for nearly everything. and yes, i’ve flattened many a board with just a chisel.

If you leave the short end on the protractor plate, you can read the angle it's at easier. By visual alone, it is lower than 40 degrees.

Thanks Yang Ji. I messed that up. I put better measurements in the description.

You might want to check that blade angle again.
Your Stanley has the iron flipped so the new one looks lower at the wood interface.

Yep, I bungled the protractor. The angle of the Stanley is about 40 degrees and the wood plane is 32. That's the angle from the sole to the top of the cutting angle on the blade.

@@NotanExpert-Woodworking It's been my experience that the lower the angle the better the plane works.
Meaning less tear out and smoother shaving action.
I'm unsure why all planes aren't made with the sharpest possible angle.
Perhaps because my experience is limited to soft woods.
P.S. shaving end grain the way you did will blow out a chunk on the back end of the cut and ruin your workpiece. I think clamping on a supporting scrap might help.

I like your show. Thanks for showing these planes. Was the back of the blade flat?

    • @NotanExpert-Woodworking
      @NotanExpert-Woodworking  ปีที่แล้ว

I only flattened about 3/4 inch and it didn't take long. It did have a slight hollow.

I think that's a rabbet plane rather than a shoulder plane. Similar, but shoulder planes are low angle, bevel up and usually metal in construction, whereas rabbets are higher angle and bevel down and usually wooden in construction. th-cam.com/video/Kh-p4YGzi8E/w-d-xo.html goes over both a fair bit. It does look like they are borrowing the styling of the metal shoulder planes a fair bit though. I found one of the manufacturers' websites and they all just list it as a "boutique wooden plane" or just "wood plane" basically.
I love those cheap Chinese wooden rabbet planes. They've been making them there for a very long time so they're usually very utilitarian and quasi disposable. I have several with different fences and other modifications to them. They make for a pretty good platform to make other planes out of since all the hard bits are done and they are easy to refine or modify to your needs. I like the ones that just look like a big block of wood with rounded corners since they give me more to hold when I'm using them.

The Stanley 92 blade bevel is 40 degrees from the sole. This one is 32. Size and shape of the bodies are very similar.

Do you have an Amazon link for the plane?

This is the one I bought. I think there are multiple vendors so you might find a better price.
