I have a 3, 4 and 5 hybrid and love them. I would switch out my 6 iron for a hybrid in an instant EXCEPT there are a sufficient number of times where I’m in need of a very low, long stinger shot to get out of trouble under a tree (as an example). I just can’t get rid of a club that is essential in situations like that.

I switched out my 4-7 irons with hybrids. I found I hit them longer but with better stopping power on the green, and a better result out of the rough.

I put a 4,5 and 6H in the bag. HUGE improvement for my game. I personally find that the hybrids are wayyy easier to shape shots and flight too. I can draw and fade them at will. I can hit high soft shots as well as hitting low rollers.

My hybrids are so easy to hit it is harder to keep them low but I guess just hands ahead of the ball and back in the stance a bit to avoid the trouble above you.

I’ve just binned the 5 iron for a hybrid! I carried 2-SW back in the day, but no need for anything more than a 6 iron today.

I am similar but still keep an Iron because Irons stop better on greens I am a fair weather golfer.
Better doing some weight training strengthen legs arms and back.
The Saguto golf the stackntilt swing explained best.
A much simpler less impact more consistant.
I use fairway woods and a Driver but I took a long time finding clubs that I feel are each my favourite clubs.

Couldn’t agree more, now use 4,5&6 hybrids, get higher, straighter shots. Maybe a bit shorter but better overall. Great video as always 👍

Great vid Andy! I went to a 6 hybrid last year and longest iron is a 7. Much easier to hold a green and stay away from hazards! Cheers!

I used to always carry 4 irons for pitching wedge. However after testing a a hybrid that hit the same distance as my for iron I had to swap it out. I tested it side-by-side versus my 4 iron and the hybrid was just so much more consistent to hit that 200 205 yard mark. It was really hard to take that for iron out but I could not argue with the distance workability and ease of use

There's a great little video with Fred Couples from the Champions Tour. The longest iron in his bag is now a 7 iron, he uses 5 and 6 hybrids. He said that he's not strong enough to use a 6 iron any more. He drives the ball 285 yds. Enough said

What a brilliant video. I’ve long since realised the importance of the loft over number on bottom of club.
In my case this is 5 iron and hybrid. There’s not much difference between my best with either but he drop off with a bad 5 iron is massive compared to the consistency of the hybrid.
I introduced a 30 degree for the same reason though as I improved all round the 6 hybrid seems to go a club further (still gapping fine with 5 as basically hit the ball a club further through summer) but now as winter has set in 6 iron out the bag completely still spring I imagine

Good stuff here. I carry a 4, 5 and 6 hybrid in the bag and have for years. My lofts are a bit higher than you tested though. 4 is 22, 5 is 25, and 6 is 28; they fit in nicely with my spacing of 10yds, I'm not a fan of 3/4 and half swings so it works better for me than 15 yd spacing. I will add that occasionally a hybrid, even from a dry fairway lie, will be a flyer and go 15+ yards further than normal but that isn't enough to offset the benefits over a long iron.

I bought a second hand 5H as an experiment and whilst I hit it reasonably well I have struggled with toe strikes (especially off tee on couple of our par3s). So I added a 5i which is more forgiving on that sort of mishit. Watching this I will try adjusting 5H to be more of a 6H loft as that may work better with my gapping and ball flight. My 5H is longer shafted than 5i interestingly. Downside with hybrids is they are double price of equivalent iron (300+ vs 150 for Ping)

Always thought provoking Andy . . . I have a Titleist U505 4i, I also have a Titleist TSR 4 hybrid . . . I know before you say, but the hybrid will go further on best strikes, but I get better strikes more consistently with the 4i - so on a tight landing spot, I go with 4i. When the GT2 3 hybrid comes out I will trade up as on shots with wider landing spots, I will take the hybrid - when there’s no pressure, the game is easier . . . All in the mind

My go to stealth 2 6 hybrid is my 170 club i have just bought a 5 hybrid due today!! . So much easier to hit than my stealth 6 iron .i have gained 5 shots of my handicap since i bought my 6 hybrid. definitely recommend the 6 hybrid out of the first cut as well. i am a senior golfer and i rarely use my 7 iron as well due to the 6 hybrid.

Andy is swinging those hybrids really well.
Exactly what your longest iron should be is always a difficult question. Mostly it is a question of club head speed, but it also depends on what irons you use - the game improvement irons have much stronger than traditional lofts to compensate for having a much lower cg location.
I play relatively traditional lofted irons - 7i is 33 degrees. I have recently gained a bit of speed (not sure why), so my 7i swing speed is 85-87 mph. I am comfortable playing a 5i with 26 degrees of loft - I swing it at about 90 mph (=/- one or two mph) it carries 180-185 yards (sometimes a little more but never 190 yards), it gets enough height and spin (4500-5000 rpm) so there is control. For me the 5i is my longest iron and then I go to a 23 degree hybrid. I did try a 26 hybrid and I hated it - launched like a PW, way too high but it did go a good distance and stopped quickly but in the wind it looked to be very difficult to control

I had planned on replacing my 4 iron with a hybrid, so had a fitting and found the 5 went the same distance and was easier to hit, so my bag now goes 6 iron, 5 hybrid, 3 hybrid, 5 wood, driver. In summer I can drop the 3 hybrid and add 3 wood, but only worth it when there is some run on the ball

I'm in the same boat in that... for longer shots, I don't know if 4 different hybrids gives me great gapping. So I have my callaways at 26. 22. and 19 degrees. vs 26/23/20/18. Gives me one more club elsewhere

  • @darkhorse2reign

All facts. I just bought an Adam's idea 6 hybrid for $25 (used). It changed my whole life. 😂... Instead of hooding my 7 iron and making sure I get pure contact I can make a normal committed swing and mash that club to reach out to 180- 190 yards or choke down and hit it 160. It gets better... When i make a terrible swing it will still give me 120-130 yards. In golf my misses matter. With a 7 iron that bad miss is 90 - 120 yards maybe worse. That kind of versatility with missing and grood swings is a lot of fun.

I'd love to see the Mizuno 925HL in this mix, to see how it performs against the hybrid💭 other thoughts, I wonder if the hybrids are as versatile as an iron? I find it a real shame that there seems to be a shift further and further down the bag when it comes to irons, I'm even guilty of it myself, 20 years ago I carried a 3i but I got side lined 7 years ago, this year my 4i has suffered the same fate, being replaced by a 4hybrid... Where does it stop I wonder? 💭

I can see the logic but i can't seem to hit hybrids for some reason. They just go low and left. I have 4,5 and 6 hybrids which are currently residing in my shed😂. They are supposed to launch and fly high but they just don't for me. I go from 5 iron to 9 wood at 24 degrees instead.

only problem I find with hybrids is they all hook for me (yuck). My first hybrids the Callaway Heaven Wood Hybrid was not draw biased and I loved them problem is I wore out the shaft on my 24 degree 4 hybrid which I could hit 210 normal swing and if i stepped on it could hit a nice nice high 230 5 yd draw. I still have a 2 and 1 Heavenward hybrid and love them. If i need a bullet straight 250+ yd shot I pull out the 17 degree 1 iron Heavenwood I wish Callaway would come out with a true neutral hybrid. But I have just purchased a hybrid like club that is neutral and used a lot on tour can't wait to hit it.
