Peerless Mantles Explained! [BRIGHTEST!!] [BEST COLOR!!]

  • In today’s video, I’ll be diving into the topic of lantern mantles and why Peerless mantles are far and above the best modern production mantles available. I’ll also go over the different sizes and how the compare to existing Coleman sizes and testing these mantles to see if they are still doped with the superior thorium salts.
    Whether you simply prefer the warm glow and soft hiss of an old school Coleman lantern or you’re a hardcore gas pressure appliance collector and have more lanterns in your collection than you care to admit, mantles are critical for good lantern light output and performance. Most collectors will swear by old Coleman Silk-Lite mantles that were made much stronger and doped with thorium for much brighter and whiter light output. But those have been out of production for almost 30 years. So what options does the average enthusiast or collector have? Peerless is one of the few companies still making high quality, thorium-doped mantles and with their proven performance, it’s no wonder that they’re so popular amongst collectors and users alike.

    Great explanation, I was always worried about the exposure but you made me feel comfortable. I just ordered 2 packs.

    Will these 24As work an a 76’ 335 Coleman?

    I have a peerless mantle in my 200a lantern now. I was actually looking for a nice comparison video which can prove the thorium mantles to be actually whiter. It looks good now but I don't want to waste the peerless mantle by swapping it out with a Coleman just to see if I can tell the difference. Wish I tried Coleman first 😂

      If it helps I just rebuilt a coleman 295 and did a mantle test with a number of brands. The newer 21 mantles were definitely more yellow and dimmer than the peerless which were much whiter with that slight, old-school green tint to it. Peerless were noticeably brighter. I also tried a cheap ebay "pink top" mantle of a similar size and while as bright as the coleman it wasn't as yellow. Way more fragile though but for 60 cents each I got what I expected. Luckily I tested the peerless after the coleman so didn't wind up wasting them. Based on what I found there is no way I'd ever go back to coleman unless they are the original silk-lite.

      @@Enjoymentboy I've had the opposite experience. I have a model 228 right now with one peerless and one Coleman in it. The peerless is slightly dimmer and more yellow.
      The big problem with the Coleman mantles is not performance but build quality. I had 3 in a row with no fiberglass core in the string. The strings just burnt up and the mantle fell off. Three dang times in a row.

    Are yours from India? Company production moved to India ....
    Wonder if they changed.
    Would have liked a comparison with modern Coleman.
    I got the peerless and a few packs of silk lite too. No Geiger counter to know which I got but your link took me to the same page I bought the peerless from

    I don't know how true it is, but recently I came across information that Peerless moved their thorium production to India, and their yttrium production to Illinois.
    Supposedly there's a "Y" or a "T" on the packaging.

    Hi.. if i change the generator of coleman powerhouse dual fuel to coleman 639 kerosene generator,do i need to change the mantle to peerless 111 or stick with 2C Hg mantle?

      @ctuan13  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Unless you're changing out the burner assembly as well, you'd use the same mantles. But if you're trying to swap over to burn kerosene, you'll need to make sure you have a preheat cup setup.

    I got peerless ones from Amazon. I've heard they aren't all good. That's why I'm here.
    I think mine are made in india
    Edit: I clicked your link and that's the same page I used to buy mine

    But why does (radioactive) thorium emit more/better white light? Does its radioactivity have anything to do with it? Or is it because it's an Actinide? (heavy element)? Kind of like how Zenon in flash tubes produces an intense perfect white light?

    • @ctuan13
      @ctuan13  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a really good question! I'm not exactly sure what the reason is, but I think you're at least partially right, thorium being an actinide means most of its incandescence is within the visible range as opposed to other elements like yttrium having significant proportions of their light output in the non-visible infrared spectrum, leading to a dimmer overall output in visible light.

      No need to justify the why with theoretical chemistry. The brightness of the various doping elements was tested and measured. What’s wrong with accepting the empirical evidence?
