  • With the brand-new June update to Photoshop 2020, a completely new code of Select Subject just for portraits is introduced! In this tutorial, we are going to see how this automatic selection tool compares with the unbeatable Pen Tool. With the help of three simple compositing examples, we will first compare the "Select Subject" with the previous versions of Photoshop. Then, we will compare it with the Pen Tool, amongst other alternatives.
    In these examples, we will also learn masking techniques for better quality edges. In the end, I'm also going to share with you a simple and straightforward masking workflow combining the power of "Select Subject" and "Select and Mask." I hope this video helps you. Thank you so much for watching :)

    This is a perfect example of why I like this channel so much. It's not just a clear tutorial, it's how it's used in the workflow. I've learned PS almost all by myself so every time I watch one of these tutorials I find new and better ways to do things that I've done for years. I've tried the "select subject" feature, was a bit disappointed because of the hair selection (in all fairness the background wasn't as contrasting as I'd have liked) but the trick with setting the blend mode to multiply worked great. Thanks a lot for this.

  • @CraigBoehman
    @CraigBoehman 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    By coincidence I'd happened to be using the Select Subject feature to cut out a model from one of my pictures just prior to watching this video. I hadn't noticed the update mentioning the improvement and was shocked at how good I was able to get all the hair - with only the slightest of tweaking necessary. I'm telling you, it's a huge improvement.
    Thanks Umesh for demonstrating the difference. One of the reasons I try to catch every new video you release. Keep up the good work and stay safe.

    The real MVP is that refine edge tool: I don't know if I have been using it wrong or if my computer isn't fast enough, but previously the tool for me was near unusable.
    Photoshop has gained so much value in the move to 20. I only wish they added a tool to highlight parts of mask that need neither adding or subtracting, but "rethinking". This could fix the annoying problem of automatic selection not finding anything to add or subtract, and you either need to manually select that part, or try finding that one magical selection Adobe Sensei understands.
    maybe in future we will get an automatic pathfinder, that aims to make sensible selection as if it was using pen tool.

  • @feelcollins4358
    @feelcollins4358 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    For those who ask, "but can you select on busy backgrounds?".
    I mean obviously, it can't find the right subject properly when the pixels are all jumbled or nearly the same in terms of color, the selection tool works by detecting contrasting pixels. The selection tool seems to have been designed to cut off single subjects in empty backgrounds since I can't imagine how you'd be able to select let's say multiple people with different outfits & skin tones overcrowding the frame when you don't even click the subject but the tool button instead. It just automatically finds the subject for you, I think it needs to recognize where the background is first, and in order to do that the background color has to be the dominant part of the image.

    • @MortenSkalstad
      @MortenSkalstad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's hit and miss, but surprisingly more hits than misses in my experience, even with multiple people on a busy background. Sure, you have to perfect the mask slightly, but it usually gives you a very good starting mask.

    • @undisclosedperson3871
      @undisclosedperson3871 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s actually pretty good with noisy backgrounds or poorly defined subjects. I use it on wildlife and even crappy underwater shots where everything is blue. Sometimes refinement is needed, but it does a hell of a lot of the hard work for you.

    I was making an image for a quick composite that I was not going to even take the time with the pen tool. I used the updated select subject and I was absolutely amazed. I wasn't expecting the huge improvement in this updated version, in fact I thought maybe it was just my imagination. I just watched your video and I can see it wasn't just my imagination. Great job PS!

    I started using Photoshop decades ago and most of the videos that you make are jaw dropper. Just amazing skills, from using Photoshop to presenting your work.
    EDIT: if you would like to make it even more perfect, just flip horizontally your video window, because as it is right now (example: 16:53) it seems like you are looking away (on the wall). If you flip the video window that you talk horizontally it will seem like you are watching on the work that you are doing at the moment.
    (Just some tips from a cameraman/director) 😉

    I think for mechanical or man-made objects which have a lot of perfect lines and perfect curves such as manufactured items with hard edges (appliances, hardware tools etc.) than the pen tool is probably the best to get perfect edge for masking. For everything else, especially portraits and hair, the select subject and mask is better choice as it is fastest. Thanks for a great tutorial! Good advice though, test select subject first, than decide which to use.
