      @@Englishwithjennifer I think, governments can solve this problem when they consider homeless is a part of society

      People see and think the homeless in street like they are just bad furniture in a road.

    • @Englishwithjennifer

      I think a good number of people care, but the problem is overwhelming, and as one individual on a single day, a person doesn't think that any single action would make enough of a difference. I also think Americans are willing to see some of their tax dollars go towards solving this problem, but only if there's a feasible plan and the money is managed well.

      Yes, it's a global issue. I experienced displacement(homelessness) for a brief moment. Mind you, i was about 4 months pregnant walking around with a nonverbal 2 year old and a almost one year old who wasn't yet walking. We didnt experience the extremities of homelessness as many others have though. We were in shelters and such and didn't have to be on the streets. Thank God. 💙
    The most disturbing status of homelessness are veterans because of how America boasts in patriotism. Those vets should be given all the attention needed to ensure they are well and their families.

      Yes, the homeless dig through trash cans here as well. It's one of the problems I heard about. If homeless camps are close to residential areas, some homeless people may go into private garbage cans, leaving residents anxious. You're also right that there are homeless living directly in the D.C. area.

    Being homeless is psychology in my country. I'm from Ukraine by the way) Here, there are a night shelter for homeless, there is food support, and even program of rehabilitation to normal life. But what do they do? Simply refuse any help, except maybe access to shelter, when they can sleeep being drunk. I repeat- it's psychology, and it's hard to return to normal life for them with going to work, have responsibilities, etc. I like your advanced videos!!!

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there are many contributing factors. I think we could likely categorize homeless people (just like we could any large population). Some truly need and want help. Others refuse, as you mentioned. But nevertheless they can't be ignored...especially in large numbers. I agree that the longer the problem persists, the harder it is to get people to transition. Glad you're open to discussing these difficult topics!

    Great explanation 9:22. "And if the Law makes it more difficult to evict someone (meaning force them to leave because they Can't Pay), then Landlords will become increasingly more cautious and they'll choose to rent their properties only to people they feel confident can pay." Landlords engage in business with prospective Renters. If a Renter can no longer Pay to Rent, or if a Landlord can no longer Provide a habitable Rental space, then the mutual business relationship falls apart. Both partners in business (Renter and Landlord) would then honor their Rental Agreement to discontinue their business relationship and go their separate ways.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I try to see the situation from both points of view. People need a place to live, but property owners need to make money because they've invested their own money in the original purchase. There are also property taxes to pay. So renters need to consider a reasonable budget and not rent a property beyond their means. Landlords need to consider the market and pay attention to supply and demand. As business people, they also need to make ethical decisions. I know there are other factors to consider, like the job market, but at least this discussion is a starting point. Thanks for listening.

    • @almacoles5501
      @almacoles5501 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Englishwithjennifer You are absolutely right. Sometimes Landlords won't know the right Rental Cost for their local market, and when they realize that nobody is accepting their Rental unit because the price point is too high for a certain condition of a property in a certain location, the Law of Supply and Demand will help regulate and guide them in lowering their Rental Cost as nobody agrees to accept their high rent cost offer. Otherwise, Landlords are predictable and will naturally decide on a Rental Cost based on what prospective Renters in their local market are actually willing to pay and how long they can sustain the property without receiving any rental business revenue.

    Hi Jennifer. Homelessness a Catch-22. I've realized you often mentioned "funded", "how the money can be spent". With a rising population in the US and elsewhere the number of homeless going to rise. But is good to hear it that in the USA this is an open question, debate on how to help them. In many countries around the world we can't hear about it at all, it's a hidden agenda by politician. Unfortunately in my country, the homeless problem is also let fall out from daily news.

    Homelessness is not a sin(wrong-doing).
    It is actually liberating. These are some of the most humble yet wise people you can come across. The natural ability of critical thinking and survival kick in. Intangible things are more valued then luxurious gains.
    Some people do fabricate a story by saying they are homeless, when in actuality...
    Those who are truly displaced or without a home, should be assisted with the knowledge of how to get back to self-sufficiency. Not thrown in prison. Law and order IS a necessity; but, remaining mindful of the weakness and vulnerability of humans is just as vital.

    The two MOST EFFECTIVE solutions would be, in my opinion, 'low-income housing and soup kitchens'
    I do NOT like to give homeless people money because i might be helping them feed a drug habit.
    Some people are uncomfortable in homeless shelters and would prefer to be in a home setting that is more private.
    Giving people food is very effective because people need to eat to survive. That is a must!!
    Low income housing helps keep the people in a mind of gratitude and they will be less likely of "screwing" up that opportunity

    This is a very serious issue, which you've done well to bring to our attention.
    Homelessness is a serious problem worldwide. We hear about America's homeless problem more than other countries as America is always under the media's spotlight. The U.S.certainly needs more homes built with rent that people can afford. I like the idea of half-way houses to help people get back on their feet when displaced, etc. It is of course important that others don't judge or condemn people in half-way houses or shelters. As for strict rules for homeless shelters - We've got to have rules or we down with the animals. Remember that from Twitter?
    We have a much smaller population in the UK, so both countries can't really be compared. In the UK, if citizens of the country don't have a job or can't work, then the Government pays their rent. There are of course conditions: Unemployed people getting their rent paid for them must make a proper effort to find work and must be well-behaved to ensure they keep their accommodation. If tenants are unruly or become drug addicts then they could end up in a shelter or even on the street. So, homelessness does exist in the UK, but isn't the problem it is in other countries.
    Credit must be given to the charities who actively help the homeless worldwide. They do some sterling work. Hats off to them!
    In a nutshell though: Much more still needs to be done.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm glad you brought up charities. I should have mentioned charities and non-profits, but the video was already getting long! It's such a complex topic. There may be more than one solution to our problem, so the efforts of multiple sources may be required. I don't think the government alone can fix this. Communities have to pull together. The criminal justice systems needs to be examined further as well. I like the idea of having conditions that people must meet in order to receive government assistance, like you mentioned. The conditions shouldn't just be stated. It needs to be verified that people are truly meeting those conditions and not "working" the system. Accountability teaches responsibility. Sadly, there's some abuse of social services. I wish the services could go only to those who need it most.

    • @stunninglad1
      @stunninglad1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Englishwithjennifer Yes, no one likes to hear of others milking the system. I am also a big fan of rent control and of government owned housing. Rip-off landlords are neither use nor ornament as rent must be affordable.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I read about a program in Canada where a group of families sponsors a refugee family. I found that interesting. Then that small group of families is invested financially and emotionally in the successful integration of that one refugee family. I wonder if this could be done for a certain population of homeless people who simply need a little help getting back on their feet, for example, a person living out of their car, but who has at least one job already. There are different possible solutions. Help needs to be given, and order needs to be restored on public streets and in public spaces.
      You can Google "tent cities" and then filter for "News" or "Images" and you'll find more information.

  • @livelystone9367
    @livelystone9367 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Answer 3
    Every landlord needs to run their property, as well as their relation with each tenant on a case by case scenario
    You never know what people may be going through in their personal lives. Policies are created for a general setting and puts tenants in a box.
    There should be verbal warnings, fines, restrictions, and such before sending a tenant an eviction notice.
    Meet up with a tenant who may be 'disturbing' the community to see their reasoning. Give people chances. Even if they abuse the advances of kindness, they were at least given a far chance.

    amazing video ma'am
    ma'am, i have a question. Would u mind solving it.
    "can we use would for a future situation instead of will??
    for ex- If it rains, the farmers would be happy.( instead of "if it rains , the farmers will be happy")
    please answer ma'am

      We can use "would" for hypothetical situations. When we imagine future possibilities, we can use will.
      If it rained, the farmers would be happy.

    Answer 5
    Seeing homeless people on the street that my buisness is flourishing on, will tell by-passers what type of character my company have.
    I will have compassion on these people and work on how to help them get on their feet, if they want to do it in the first place.
    My concerns would be:
    The well being of the homeless.
    What exactly is causing the rise in more homelessness in my area?
    How can i help improve their livelihood?
    Will this effect my business in a negative way?

      You list important concerns and questions to consider.
      (Small correction: have compassion FOR these people)

    Hi Jennifer. Homelessness is a big problem around the world and yes governments should focus on the reasons prompting this problem.
    I think the main reason is the lack of laws protecting people from being homeless.
    The person who earns the lowest salary according to a city's law should be provided with a home suitable to their wage, this must be a basic principle.
    I'm shocked because we all know that the US is the richest country on earth and it leads and controls the economic movement around the world.
    If this is the situation in the US what about other countries that have a weak economy and are full of corruption?
    Jennifer I wanna I ask you about the dvlottery.
    Is there a real chance to obtain the green card by entering the dvlottery?

      Hi. Thanks for joining the conversation. Indeed, we must consider the need for housing that matches different levels of income. I hope effective solutions will be found.
      I don't know much about the dvlottery. I'd suggest reviewing the information on .gov website. Make sure you get accurate information. Best wishes!

    Interesting Lesson ¡¡¡, I think that the big concentration of people in giant cities, the fear to intend to search a solution for the lack of housing because moneyowners should not invest in housing, the very low wages, the immigration because theres is lack of investments in the origin countries, the problem of drugs, alcohol, sex , and guns...... that's very very complex and the politicians I belive that don't really search solutions, sorry for this pesimistic speech but is the today's problem.

      It's fine to be honest with your thoughts on a topic like this. You're right to target a long list of contributing factors. It's a very complex problem. I hope that some politicians will find the solutions for their states and cities. The situation is bad, but I believe it's fixable.
