    Dear viewers: I have made a genuine effort to treat this topic with the sensitivity it deserves. If anything in this video has caused you offense, please know it was not my intention. My main goal, as always, is to help English language learners in the U.S. and abroad. I would like to offer relevant information and vocabulary that will help you follow and participate in discussions about race and racism. Making this video is my effort to help you follow current issues in the United States and voice an opinion on the given topic. Thank you for watching. My best wishes to all!

      Hi Mike. It's hard to examine the various causes of racism. I'm not an anthropologist, criminal psychologist, or any other kind of person with the expertise to see the interplay of the many different factors (social, economic, psychological, etc.) contributing to the problem. I do think that with any social problem, causes and effects can overlap. For example, are interracial felonies a cause or an effect of a larger problem? Certain cycles form, and the challenge for society is to break them. I think we have a lot of work to do in order to reduce crime in general, improve our correctional system, and make sure arrests happen when they should and in a manner that's efficient, humane, and safe for our officers.

    Islam is against racism and injustice
    The Prophet (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said:
    “Indeed there is no excellence for an Arab over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab, nor a white person over a black one, nor a black person over a white one, except through taqwá(piety and obedience to Allāh).”
    Related by Aḥmad (5/411), and it was authenticated by Ibn Taymīyyah in Kitāb al-Iqtidāʾ (p. 69).

      Those are indeed wise words. The beautiful thing is that peace and tolerance are taught and practiced in many religions. I think many faiths and cultures teach some version of what we know in English as "The Golden Rule." It's basically about treating others as you wish to be treated. Why hurt another? Why steal from another? Why speak badly of another? We don't want these things to be done to us. Kind wishes to you!

      This is not true dear friend!
      I don't know in which country you live, but we Iranians are being held hostage by Islamic law.
      We are being tortured
      We are humiliated
      We have been imprisoned
      And some of us will be executed!
      Why?
      Because we do not accept Islam.
      In Iran, Baha'is and Christians do not have the right to promote religion, and even Sunnis are under pressure.
      If a Muslim wants to change his religion and become a Christian, he should be executed according to Ayatollah's fatwa.
      The government of the Islamic Republic discriminates between ordinary people and officials, and spends people's wealth on terrorism in logic and in the world, while the Iranian leader considers himself the leader of the world's Muslims, but in fact is the leader of racists and terrorists in the world.
      Baha'is do not have the right to work or even live in Iran.
      We, the people of Iran, have been watching real racism for 40 years in Iran with our own eyes.
      And the reason is only Islam my friend!
      Women in Iran have to wear headscarves, otherwise they will be flogged.
      Women are not allowed to travel without their husbands' permission
      Women do not have the right to divorce because the right to divorce belongs only to men, and in Islam the man is not equal to the woman. The right of inheritance of a man is twice the right of inheritance of a woman.
      Now answer this question with a little honesty , Isn't Islam a religion of discrimination and racism?

    • @Englishwithjennifer

      Let's try to keep our discussion free of accusations. I allowed this thread to continue because I have the hope that we can reach a peaceful conclusion. It hurts my heart to know that anyone is being persecuted. At the same time, I know that laws (civil and religious) can be interpreted differently and misused. I interact with many students throughout the week, many in a live setting, and all the Muslims I come into contact with are peaceful, kind, and respectful. The same can be said of students of other faiths (or who choose not to practice a faith). The beauty of language learning is that it brings many together, and we work towards a common goal: communication.

    Racism is a global problem
    Here in Brazil there is a lot of discrimination, but the worst is between poor and rich
    I'm black and my wife is blonde but here there are also people who do not accept these things very well
    This reminds me of that Cher half breed song

      Hello Aparecido. The first step is recognizing how we might be judging others, even subconsciously. I'm a big believer in peaceful interaction to promote tolerance. I went to an elementary school where nearly all the students were white. Then I went to an inner city high school with more racial and economic diversity. College is where I had the chance to study and live with people from many different backgrounds (faiths, sexual orientation, etc.) Everyone's focus was on learning, and all our so-called differences didn't divide us. They just added layers to our experience. Kind wishes to you and your family!

    Hi
    In dictionaries, we find that many words are defined by synonyms .
    How do we define the precise special meaning of each word ?
    Ex :
    show vs express
    Utter vs say

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good observation. You can listen to how the words are used in context. YouGlish is very helpful that way.
      Also, a learner's dictionary like Cambridge lists "show" as an A2 word (high beginner) with high frequency.
      dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/show
      In contrast, "express" is B2 (low intermediate) with slightly lower frequency.

Search among articles under social studies or civics. There are texts about gaining the right to vote and getting access to equal opportunities (education mainly). I recall an article about Ruby Bridges. Although your son is in kindergarten, you might read some of the articles for 1st or 2nd graders. You can read together. Let him ask questions. Good luck and kind wishes to you and your family.

Lots of legal, proper words in this video, rich in vocabulary. Well, about the racism can't comment I'm not interesting about this subject. I grown-up in Eastern Europe and now in my adopted country we never had such an issue. We know America is different. While I've lived in Italy as a refugee, one funny guy for our group when to the US Embassy for the interview. I nice lady from the Embassy had lots of questions and the guy with a poor English well, felt a bit inferior. The last question was 'are you a black or white'? The exhausted guy, from such an unexpected perhaps provocative question stood up a said. No lady, I'm circumcised would you like to see it? The pretty lady replied, not really, but you can go to America. 😃😃😃😃😃😃His application has been granted. 👍

      Good observation. "Fight" can be transitive or intransitive. Dictionaries don't recognize any significant difference in meaning when we express an effort to end or defeat something with "fight" or "fight against." Merriam-Webster lists "fight poverty" and "fight against poverty" as acceptable examples.

    I believe police officers should be put under periodical psychological tests so that you can take out each one who demonstrates the intention of having raciscm. It is also suggested to have a decisive law to punich any one performs an act of racism.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that a good number of professions, like law enforcement, place a great strain on people, and this can affect their treatment of others. If psychological tests were proven to accurately identify potentially harmful thoughts, then they should be used during the initial training and, as you suggested, at intervals throughout one's career. Police officers should have enough support in place to help them process the difficult situations so many of them see on a regular basis. Society needs law enforcement, so we should invest in making it the best we can.

    After this lesson , I can write and speak about racism and race. But I cant. Although I learned many words on race and racism,to be honest I certainly dont believe any race, nation, ethnicity and religion that are superiour or inferiour to others. That's the reason why I dont want to write about it. What I believe in is that all is an instrument composed, invented or formed by some people who make use of the discrimination as warlords in order to dominate those different from themselves and control over others. While some are superiour, the others are inferiour or vice versa. So hard do I believe that.
    It seems to me that all is nonsensical gobbledegook that we, as human, have made up. The only, single, sole purpose is to exploit people and their resources and control over them. The outcome of this kind of discrimination has always ended up with the war, social unrest, atrocity, blood and tear. It is crucial that any one think and have such a thought then we have to fight agains this kind of people who make faulty assumptions about others, however, as I said before, I do belive we should no longer need that kind of opinions and attitude in 21st century
    Thanks a lot Jennifer

      Many would agree that it is dangerous to place one group above another for any reason. However, as you noted, there are people on this earth who wish to dominate and control others. If only all children could learn at an early age how to respect others as well as themselves, then the world would be a better place. If kindness, consideration, generosity, and accountability were instilled in all of us, there would be less greed and egoism. Let's hope we evolve and become more peaceful. Thanks for watching.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think there's a lot of discussion today about what racism really is. The basic definition many agree on is a belief that one race is superior to another in some way, and then as an extension of that, the way a person with such beliefs treats others.
      Simple definition: www.britannica.com/dictionary/racism
      More advanced definition: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racism
      As for taking pride in one's ethnicity and wanting to preserve the culture one was raised in, I don't think that's inherently bad. I think a lot of it has to do with how your beliefs and mindset influence the way you treat others. At least, that's how I see it. :) Thanks for watching and commenting.

    What about the term 'people of color'? Don't you think it's kind of offensive, too? I mean, the fact that you can describe someone with such expression sounds racist even if you're just describing the color of their skin.

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! I should have mentioned that. We use "people of color" to refer to non-whites within the U.S. That means Asian, Latino, Native American, Hawaiian, and Black. It's not offensive, but depending how it's used, it can sound either inclusive or exclusive. I recall a scene from the movie Mean Girls when the one guy says to Lindsay Lohan's character, "I only date women of color." It's meant to be funny. It's a comedy. But it's an illustration of the young man's preferences. I read that talk show host Ellen Degeneres received criticism on social media for posting support for "people of color." Some felt that wasn't specific enough; she should have used "Black," given the recent events. In my opinion, I think her intentions were good, so people should be more tolerant of word choices. One thing for sure is that Americans can be very sensitive about word choices.
