Superb, Giles. A two nighter in two great locations. Sorry I’m late watching 😊 It amazes me no end how you can go so light. I just don’t seem to be able to do it. Great to see you out and putting in the miles. Until the next one 👋🏼😉👍🏼🍻
Thanks very much Tim. That’s very kind. Yeah, I’ve just got a bee-in-my-bonnet about going light/minimal. It’s great for a long hike especially with an old military pack which can be not the most comfortable !!! But it also adds a challenge to the whole thing which is good. I know you would be well able to do it Mate - but understand why you may prefer a bit more comfort and a decent night sleep too !!! Cheers Buddy 🍺🍺
Should carry a small folding solar panel, wind up/solar radio or a solar power bank which can be charged from home first to charge phone..but a pub can be a nice excuse to charge the batteries... equipment and your own...good vid.👍
Cheers Scotty. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Please don’t tell my wife about those mobile solar charging units though …… 😥 ….. it’s one of my last excuses left 😳 …. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Cheers 🍺🍺😊
I Say Giles Old Chap! Another quality transmission. So relaxing and your sense of humour Re the pub cracks me up. Man after my own heart. 😁 I love your one pot meals. You've inspired me to do one. 👌🙏 Thanks awfully
Thanks very much for watching Steve Old Chap. And making such a spiffing comment too. Absolutely can’t beat breaking up a wild camp to head to the nearest hostelry - what !!! I’m sure your one potters would far outclass mine any day of the week Old Chap. Thanks awfully once again - appreciated. HORRAH !!! 😃
Good morning Giles, you've managed to brighten a boring Monday at work. As always you go the extra mile for us, your viewing audience by suffering a meal and a few pints in the pub JUST to top up you batteries. Your a star.🍺🍺🤣. Another quality outing, thanks.👏
Thanks very much - really appreciate your kind support ultrarunner. Glad the vid eased a boring Monday morning!!! Yeah, it was a real struggle sitting in that Pub downing beer - but luckily my power-pack only needed 4 pints of charge 🤣😂🤣😂. Cheers my Friend 🍺🍺👍
Another good one, Giles. One more to go, and I’ll be caught up. I enjoy watching you setup your camp, settle in with maybe a brew and then cooking your meal. I didn’t realize southern England had those hills and great views, that you always seem to find. The scenery is always so varied and interesting. I also noticed that the camera does not do justice to the steepness of the hills you were climbing 🧗♀️. The back and forth of setting up your camera and then retrieving it must be a real pain. But, I guess it’s all part of the filming process, of which you do a very good job. I always look forward to your videos. Thanks again for taking me along and sharing your hike. Cheers, my friend 🍻. May the wind be soft against your back, the road rise up to meet you, the rain be gentle on your face and until the next time, may God hold in the palm of his hand. 😊
Thanks very much Steven. As always I really appreciate your kind support. Glad you like the vids and thx for watching so many !!! Yeah, very lucky we have such beautiful countryside here. And the hills add to views and the challenge !!! You are right about returning to get the camera, it can slow things down quite a bit but adds another dimension to the whole adventure. Thx again my Friend 😊👍
Evening Giles .. 👍👍👍 .. another good one 😊. Hills and Dales .. when trudging up one, the Song 'Spinning Wheel' ca 1968 by Blood Sweat and Tears always comes to mind .. which I then inflict with gusto upon my fellow Walkers, thus increasing their suffering atcleast four-fold 🙄. 🎼 "What goes up, must come down .. Spinnin' wheel got to go around .. Talkin' 'bout your troubles, it's a cryin' sin .. Ride a painted pony, let the spinnin' wheel spin" 😁. Until next time then .. thanks for sharing .. take care .. Tommy
Ha ha !!! Thanks as always Tommy - and I can imagine the looks you get from the (sweaty!) faces of your fellow hikers 🤣😂🤣😂 I expect the forest is getting cold and frosty now ….. and, more usefully, Granny free 😃😄👏👏👏 Cheers my Friend 🍺🍺
@@gilesbinyon Cold and frosty .. yep .. nice 👍. 'Granny Free'? Not on your Nelly! Swiss Grannies are amongst the fittest and most active World-Wide. They're out there in ALL weathers .. wandering through the forests, walking their pooches, pushing Grandchildren in Prams, cycling / pulling shopping trolleys through the snow / rain / ice / whatever to and from the local supermarkets, etc, etc. Giles, they are FORMIDABLE 😳 😁. I suspect that if a 'Granny Olympics' were to be held, the Swiss would not disgrace themselves 😏. And of course .. in default 'Surveillance Mode' .. always ......
Hi Giles. Sorry you had to go to the pub to charge your power pack, I know how hard these things are, but you did well, the ethos of leave no trace and leave the pub ASAP work really well. You seem to of recovered from the ordeal well enough though😇. Superior video throughly enjoyed. Great to get out for two nights. Loving the gear. Shame about that spring though, as looking forward to seeing it. Hope you're keeping well mate, all the best, Chris. P.S well done on the dumplings👍👍👍
Thanks very much Chris. Always appreciate your support Mate. Hope you are doing well Bud. Yeah, my power pack ended up taking ‘4 pints’ of charge !!! 😂🤣😂🤣 Yeah, the spring seems to have been ‘developed’ into some kind of game bird centre - slightly depressing 😐. Dumplings were surprisingly pleasant - 👍👍Hoping you are managing to get out Mate despite these heavy rain days we’re getting. Take care 🥃🥃👍
Appreciate that very much Keith. Thanks as always for taking time to watch and comment. Yeah, it was nice to get out for a couple of nights. Just so annoying having to go into the Pub 🤣😂🤣😂🤣🍺🍺🍺🍺. Cheers my Friend 😊👍
Another brilliant video Giles ( late watching this on work commitments , but waiting for the pleasure off watching your video was worth the wait and your self filling pint 😀 👍 😉 cheers for sharing your wanderings with us Giles
Cracking little adventure there Giles and a nice re supply at the pub why not 🍺🍺 it's definitely getting cold now I'm laying in my hammock watching this and it's a cold morning I don't know how you sleep without a sleeping bag hard as nils you mate atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Cheers Jimmy - always very much appreciate your support Mate. Nice to hear you are out again, especially after your old camp an’ all. Yeah, it’s been really warm down in the south but it can’t last much longer. Cheers Bud 🍺🍺
@@gilesbinyon it was cold and fog for us but no Rain so all good ye camp has gone but lots of new adventures to do mate still got your other video to watch 👍👍
Another great video and outing…Maybe try putting something under the front edge by your head of the tarp. The small opening should give you fresh air by your head or at least a small breeze to keep smoke off your face without making your body and legs and feet in the colder air. Have fun stay safe.
Thank you very much Kenneth - as always appreciate your support 😊 That’s very good thinking - I did have a bit of a fiddle with the shelter but couldn’t seem to improve things much. But always worth a try - hoping it won’t be as bad next time. Thx again 😊👍
Thank you sir for another great video. As always I watch all your videos I have watched them over and over again LOL. Until then be safe leave no Trace with you in spirit Dave
Thanks as always Arizona Dave - really appreciate your support. I hope you are well and able to get out (maybe on your petrol powered bike too). Keep safe yourself my Friend 🇺🇸🇬🇧 thx as always 😊👍
Great adventure Giles - thanks for sharing! You are blessed with some beautiful countryside. Same here, on paper. If only you could see the paper through the fog and never-ending drizzle...
Thanks very much Darren - always appreciated Mate. And Yeah, it’s been on and off p****g down for ages. The ground round here is already saturated 😳 Could be even worse by the sounds of it, where you are 😐
Cracking couple of days out rhere Giles . Shame you were forced into an extended stay in the pub . Nightmare 😂. Liked the old bannock dumpling thing. I think i might have to take a leaf out of your book on the old one meals. I'd probably add some jerky though. Agree about the coconut oil thing . Its handy for a few things . In regards to cooking, some things it compliments and others can taste a bit funny . Great vid Giles take care bud 🏕 👌
Thanks very much Mark. Appreciate you watching and commenting - especially with young kids - I remember how hard it is to get any time for yourself. Yeah, bannock dumplings worked okay. Like you say in your latest video - I could have added in a few things for flavour etc - maybe next time. Take care Buddy 🍺🍺👍
Another top-notch episode, Giles. Very much appreciated, I can tell you. It seemed an epic outing. I'm glad you managed to get out for a two-nighter. I try to go for two nights if I can, as I love it when you can experience a whole day between two nights. You wake up in the woods, and then go to sleep again in the woods. I'm surprised that there seems to be so much space tucked out of the way in southern England. I really enjoyed the first five minutes of rambling through the different woodland scenes. That's just the sort of areaI like to explore: woody, hilly, and away from it all. I loved all the changes of scene. Even while away to charge your power bank, you managed to record several changes of scenery as the drinks and meals came and went. And of course, as you said. you then made sure to leave the pub as quickly as possible. "I just hope the beer numbs the pain." I really empathised with you there, Giles :) I had a funny thought as I was watching you pushing your way up the hills, thinking that you must have already done it all once, in order to set up the camera! And as for the celeriac burger, well, I know you don't hide it and show when things don't go to plan, so I was with you in hoping that it wouldn't be making a reappearance! Sorry to hear the smoke and wind were being troublesome. Luckily, last time I was out the smoke was ok, but I remember once waking up and there seemed to be smoke stuck in my nose, from a night of breathing it in or smelling it. I also like to do dumplings while out in the woods, a very nice addition to a stew. Anyway, thanks so much as always for this video, Giles, always a real treat. I'd been waiting expectantly for a while and was just thinking yesterday, 'Can't be long now until Giles posts!" and then there it was. Take care, and I look forward to another brilliant installment in due course.
Thanks very much as always Adrian. I do appreciate your support. And I thought of your last video when I realised I could get 2 days out in the woods 😊👍. As you say, it’s just a little bit special to have that extra time out. Yeah, it was a bit tough going at times. Partly because the days are so short now and you have to keep up the pace if you want to get a few things done - especially if filming too !!! (and yeah, going back down to get the camera can be a bit of a test - as you know yourself - 😂🤣 - oh well, keeps you fit I suppose 😂🤣😂🤣). Hoping you can get out soon again and also that things are not too wet and windy in Wales ⛺️🏕Take care my Friend 😊👍
Love watching your videos with the minimalistic gear, need to give myself a good talking to after spending thousands over the years when I only needed a sheep skin, but then again I’m a bit nesh 😂 last time I camped in a shelter like yours I ended up smelling like a smoked kipper from the fire. All the best very enjoyable watch.
Cheers Roger - ha ! You’re right - and I did smell like bonfire and also was slightly damp and muddy !!! Very relieved they let me in the Pub 😂🤣😂🤣 thx again 🍺🍺👍
Great work Giles! I think I've been to that pub (assuming I've correctly recognised it from those brief glimpses). There had been a pheasant shoot nearby the day I was there, and it was amusing for once to not be the odd one out wearing tweed! At least superficially anyway, I'm a vegetarian so I didn't exactly fit in with that crowd. I wasn't a million miles from your neck of the woods (no pun intended) at the weekend, and some of the woodland scenes in this video looked similar. I'm impressed at anyone who can manage more than one night of wild camping in a row, I'm always very glad of a hot shower and a proper bed the next day!
Thank you very much John. Yeah you would feel quite comfortable perhaps in your usual attire at this Pub (Check email). I was pleased that it was quiet and had no bouncers on the door…..not sure they would always welcome the ‘wood smoke smelling, damp and slightly muddy, Old Man of the Woods’….😂🤣😂🤣 Excellent celeriac burger though 😊🍺🍺🍺🍺👍
Surprised you didn't zonk out after those pints and burger. I know I would have. 😴 Anyway, great video as always. You make it all look so simple and easy.
Hi Giles my old pal, another great video. That self filling pint looked ace lol just managed to pick up a German flecktarn tent cheap in excellent condition so think I'm going to adapt that and see how I go, well done mate and take care.
Thanks very much indeed Nick - really appreciate the support. Yeah, can’t beat the ‘self filling glass’ 🤣😂🤣😂 Happy camping with the flecktarn tent. Think there are vids on YT featuring those tents. Cheers my Friend 🍺🍺👍
Hey Giles. Really enjoyed this one!! Thank you for being a good steward of the land. Even though you’re across the pond from me, public land is public land. Take care sir and I’m looking forward to the winter trips. NQU
Another great video, thanks for sharing. Looks really nice territory. The only good thing about a wee bit of smoke off the fire is that it keeps away the midges up here in Scotland during the summer, in fact, I very often load up my fire with heather so it smoulders overnight, the smoke is lovely and fragrant and the little flying fellows dont like it. Agreed, re the shooting chairs etc, don’t like seeing them at all, am off in the other direction! Best wishes from Argyll.
Thanks very much John. Really appreciate the support and that interesting comment. Especially about the fire - yeah, I have also found that a smokey fire keeps away the bugs too. The heather idea sounds lovely. It’s just that occasionally the wind manages to shove the smoke inside the shelter 😐 Cheers and hoping the weather not too wet in Argyll at the moment 😊👍
As always Giles, hugely enjoyable video, thanks so much for taking time and the effort to upload. And that cold Doom bar ale looked bloody good !. Thank you once again.
Cheers Taff. Thank you for watching and commenting. And yeah, the Doom Bar was nearly too good - I’ll have to bring 2 power packs for recharging next time 😂🤣🍺🍺👍
Cheers Marty - really appreciate your kind support as always. Sorry you were stuck inside this weekend - especially as the weather was pretty good. Hoping you can get out soon. Thx again my Friend 🙏😊
I salute you as without guys like you, dedicated to the cause, a lot of those rural Pubs would go out of business. 🙄 On a slightly more serious note, do you take your Muddy Boots off being entering such watering holes or are they okay with it? Shame you couldn't find the Natural Spring, but better luck next time. When you were coming back up that ravine, what did you say, I couldn't work it out, something like, 'I hope that silly inaudible doesn't appear again'?
Cheers Robert. Appreciate your support as always and hope you and yours are well. Glad you understand the effort I have to put in to support local businesses - I must be some kind of martyr 🤣😂🤣😂 Always best to scrape off the boots before entering - there is usually a boot scraper or somewhere to do it. But the Pubs in the videos are all in areas of hiking trails and so (in summers months at least) are used to walkers coming in. Yeah, I was pushing myself up those hills a bit hard and at one point felt my lunch - a beautiful celeriac burger - would make another appearance 🤣😂🤣😂 I bet it’s turning chilly where you are Mate. Stay safe and warm and thx as always 🍺🍺👍
a very nice little excursion! I'm going to suggest a handful of dried parsley added to your dumpling flour. I don't know if you grow it but if you do, it dries fast and weighs almost nothing with a bonus of flavor and nutrition for your dumplings.
Thanks very much Lucy - always appreciate you watching and commenting. And I’ll deffo keep that tip in mind for the next dumpling batch - as you say weighs nothing to bring along 😊👍
A cheeky 2 nighter from you, my dear fellow. Always a pleasure to see you pop up. Shame about having to go to the pub though. However, sometimes sacrifices are required to get the job done. You handled the situation perfectly though, Giles😂
Ha ha !!! Thx very much. Dug - really kind of you to sympathise with me having to sit and drink while my power pack recharged 😂🤣😂🤣 unfortunately it ended up taking 4 pints of charge !!! 🤣😂🤣😂 Cheers 🍺🍺👍
Thanks for sharing another great video Giles! I really appreciate your care for nature and our environment. I'm a hunter myself, only for food that is. I would never destroy a beautiful woodland for myself to have advantage on the game. Camp on and stay safe and healthy! Kentucky USA 🇺🇸 enjoys you!🏕️🪓🔥🪵
Thanks as always Mike - appreciate your support. Yeah, that game breeding area felt quite ‘commercialised’ I felt. Hoping you can get out soon Bud 🇺🇸🇬🇧🍺🍺👍
I have see a good few of your videos now I do enjoy them, I love the old school gear and how you have diled it in to just how you like to camp. I also love the dry hummer 😀, keep vids coming, love your work mate 👍
I love the no synthetics approach, it just seems right out in the wild. A special thanks for forcing yourself to go to the pub, just for our benefit. Subscribed.
I bought some dehydrated veggies and I think they need seasonings and rehydration for quite a while. So I prep just enough veggies now to take with. But mash and quinoa are going a storm. I use my trangia system for wet nights, unless I take wood with me. I keep gas units for camp grounds and tinder dry camps.
Appreciate you watching and commenting Mark. Love those points you make - it’s all about finding what works for you (half the fun sometimes!) - and I think you are have a good system of work organised there. And yeah, lightweight stuff like quinoa and mash are just great Thx again 😊👍
Can't remember your knots? No problem! Try Giles Binyon's "No Knot Knots"!😂 ...As facetious as that may sound, I actually meant it as a compliment. Thanks for the video
Thank you Jacek - appreciate your support. Yeah, when it comes to knots - well everything really - keeping it safe and simple usually works the best 😊👍
Another superb film Giles, and a double night out. I always keep an eye on your subscriptions and am pleased to see them steadily rising each time I watch a new film. Without a doubt my absolute favourite channel on bushcraft and there's a lot of choice.
Hi Giles, Absolutely brilliant once again, the scenery, the pub, the camp itself (a 2 dayer at that aswell) and especially those dumplings. Thanks again Giles for taking us with you by bringing us these videos. Simply brilliant. All the best Paul
A satisfying and peaceful time in nature as always. Except maybe that very obviously curated area for game feeding and shooting. I understand it's part of country life and work but always gives me a chill to come upon places like that. Wonder where the spring was in all that. Anyway thank you for another good visit to the downs and woods.
Thank you very much Catherine. Yeah, that man made game breeding area was slightly depressing. And I could hear water but could not locate it. I think it was being utilised for the ‘breeding program’ and I didn’t want to hang about looking around there for too long. I left the way I had come in. I hope you are doing well and the Forest School is thriving. Take care and thx again 😊
Another great video Giles, just what the doctor ordered after a long day at work. Itching to get out there myself now after watching 👍🏼🙂 Thanks for posting and keep up the good work!
Thank you very much Richard. And that’s a lovely comment cheers. Yeah, I’ve only done one ‘kit video’ which was about the kind of shelter I use. However, I do try and show the bits and pieces I use in the videos. There is such little kit really that I think it has pretty much all been filmed showing approximately how it can be used (and most of it has more than one use which I try to show as well). If I get many more requests I will try to do something on the kit. Thx again Richard - cheers 🍺🍺😊
Well done Giles another great and enjoyable video. Glad you managed to get out for a couple of nights in a row, and with no rain 😆. Take care and hope to see another one soon! 😁👍
Ah, the dreaded Doom Bar Giles . The sand bar on the river Camel in Cornwall that accounted for more than 600 wrecks, but a decent pint when you’re having to charge the batteries. Hope you’re staying dry on your adventures🌈Plymouth Pete
Cheers Plymouth Pete. Always really appreciate your support. Yeah, after those pints, a celeriac burger and those hills ….. Doom Bar nearly claimed another wreck !!! 🤣😂🤣😂Take care 🍺🍺👍
Thanks very much Tee Eff. Really appreciate your support as always. Yeah, I’ll have to upgrade to a long-life power pack …..(NOT!) ….. 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺👍😁 Cheers my Friend 🍺🍺😊
@@gilesbinyon hmm, not sure about that long-life power pack thing. they call them "bricks" for a reason, not at all in keeping with the Binyon "light and old school" ethos. best to go with the tried and true pub recharge facilities i should think.;)
Giles, I very much enjoy watching your hikes through the South England woods and downs. Have spent the greater part of my life in Canada and love the deep forests that surround us here, but still hanker for the Hampshire beechwoods that I grew up with some 8o years ago, so it’s a delight to see you tromping through them and camping there as I once did. I admire your choice of non-synthetic materials but wonder why you don’t include eider down amongst them? Surely it’s still possible to get quilts with natural cotton covers, and the weight to warmth ratio is very friendly? On the subject of warmth, following your example I recently lent a couple of sheepskins to a grandson and his friend when they went on a four-day hike in Algonquin. They had snow on the ground and below freezing temperatures but reported back that sleeping on the sheepskins under them (in addition to light synthetic mats)had appreciably improved their comfort. 1#😮
Thank you kindly Margaret. I do appreciate you watching and commenting. And that’s a very good point about a down quilt/eider down. Yeah, I’m sure they would be available in cotton coverings. I should research this some more. The only thing that would put me off would be that down is a bit susceptible to damp - loses its insulation and takes a while to dry. This is where wool blankets/clothing have a slight advantage. Glad your grandson and friend had some success using a sheepskin rug as a sleep pad 😊 . One day I want to try a reindeer pelt !!! Thanks again, stay well and warm 😊👍
@25:22 "Unfortunately I've got to head off to the pub". I don't understand these words... Are you sure you're speaking English? 🤪Kidding aside, I really enjoyed this, & really appreciate your minimal and non-synthetic approach to the outdoors. Cheers & thanks!
Thanks very much for watching the first half - the multi day trips to involve more footage which makes for a longer video unfortunately. Glad you picked up somethings about the wind and smoke around the shelter. Cheers.😊👍
Thank you very much. And you are absolutely right. It would have been safe to stash the kit there and it did cross my mind. But I just felt a bit happier taking it along and it’s pretty comfortable (10kg approx). Cheers 😊👍
Thanks very much Owen. Always appreciate your support. Yeah, I haven’t eaten meat for about 30 years. And also very little dairy/eggs the last few years too. Cheers my Friend 🍺🍺👍
I enjoyed that one, Giles, thanks for taking us along. I wonder if propping up one of the sides at the midpoint a few inches would have created a draft to clear the smoke. I didn't think your new bushpot was going to be big enough for your stews, but you seem to be making it work.
Thanks very much for the support RKW. Yeah, that’s great thinking and I did try a couple of things with the shelter walls but it didn’t seem to make much difference. Maybe I didn’t quite do the right thing. You’re right about the pot - it’s a bit more fiddly but it can be made to work 😊👍
I've tried the no synthetic approach and been mostly successful apart from the sleeping pad. After struggling sleeping on rug's trying to mound up leaf litter and so on I decided to use my self inflating mat. A small compromise but worth it for a decent night's sleep.
Thanks very much for watching and that interesting comment Dion. Well done on going down the non synthetic approach - it’s not easy. Sounds like you’re doing great. Just one small compromise on the sleeping pad. There’s usually compromises Mate - nothing to be ashamed of - as I say it’s not easy. And a good nights sleep is important too - I am still striving towards this goal 😊👍
Great video as always Giles. Can you show us how you rig the adjustable cord hanging down over the fire - looks like there’s a sliding friction knot in use there?
he did have a video about the knots he uses, that one got me using the "no knot knot", but it seems to be deleted, perhaps he might undelete it, or do a new one, because i am sure he will get this sort of question asked many times as the channel grows.
Thanks very much for watching and commenting Sean. I’ve just zoomed back through some old vids because I knew there was one where I tried to show the pot hanging knot (which is easily formed with a line with a fixed loop at the end, a sliding pot-hook and a small stick). Check out ‘in search of places to wild camp England’ - just fast forward to the camp fire set-up. 👍
Thanks John. Yeah, I don’t think I got around to showing the pot-hanging knot on the military cape set-ups video (I hope that vid is still available for viewing!!!). But I did try show it on ‘in search of places to wild camp England’ . Anyway, thx for watching the video John. Cheers 🍺🍺
Hill walking is hard going but the views gold can't pay for , in Germany the Yew tree is called the Devil tree probably because it has two tree trunks and poison seeds in red berries, the long log idea is not a bad idea for a windy day as it will keep the fire covered and plenty of feul to feed the fire , the Ash grave yard has never ending fire wood so don't worry in running out .
Thanks very much as always Owen. Really appreciate your support. Yeah, the Yew tree has a lot of interesting (and scary 😱😂🤣) cultural history. Cheers Buddy ⛺️🔥😊👍
Might have to unfortunately head to a pub, you poor thing you haha. Can I ask why you didn't cache your kit then just take the water bottles to the pub? I try to hit a pub on route any time I am hiking. Great video thanks for posting.
Thanks very much for your kind support. Yeah, it did cross my mind to leave kit stashed. I have done this before but I just figured to bring bottles, power pack, spare jumper - I decided to just bring the whole kit (about 10kg). Probably not too logical but luckily it’s quite comfortable. I make you right using the odd Pub as a waypoint - it’s half the fun eh ? (don’t tell the wife !!! 😳) Cheers Bud 🍺🍺
You've certainly got this down to a well practised routine. I wonder how you manage those cold UK nights without a decent blanket or sleeping bag? Surely you can scrounge a thin, woollen blanket and a hessian chaff bag? Heavy but warm and non-synthetic. Also, is that pack better to hike with than that bum dragger you used to use?
Ha ! Thanks very much - yeah getting the hang of the shelter set ups but the ground levels and the tree positions usually b****r things up !!!😂🤣 Yeah, got through the cold last year with the ‘skin of my teeth’. Will see how this year pans out - but may need some wool wrapped around me ! Yeah, this pack is a bit more comfortable than the bum dragger - although that one is not too bad either ! Thx again - enjoy your summer Buddy 🔆🍺🍺👍
I think he would really enjoy using a 7x7 oilskin tarp, would give him lots more shelter options & more room to move about inside. The down side is they are expensive but will last a long time.
Thanks very much Ty Williams. It has crossed my mind but at the moment all I have are ex-military cotton canvas capes - and the NVA Zeltbahn has sort of become my default one 😊👍
That sounds like an interesting option there - and a little bit more room would be good. I need to start a bit of research. Although the very occasional use as a waterproof coat (when it’s raining hard) is appealing with the military capes. Thx as always for watching and commenting Moors Hound 😊👍
I'm glad to see you enjoyed another wild camp Giles and that the weather, though autumnal, was not too cold. Smoke inhalation seems to be an issue, though hopefully won't be a problem when the wind blows steadily in one direction. Do you ever take a small axe or larger fixed blade knife with you, to enable you to split larger logs by batoning? In which case, you might need a larger saw. It all adds to the weight!
Thanks Terry. Appreciate you watching and commenting as always my Friend. Yeah, sometimes take a large knife which is suitable for battoning - useful when things are damp. But I’ve recently been bringing a much smaller and lighter knife which seems very handy because it is a legal UK carry. So I can just shove it in my pocket and forget about it. I keep the (carbon steel) blade stropped regularly and it can cope with everything except perhaps battoning…..everything is a compromise 😐 Thx again Terry - have a good week 🍺🍺👍
@@gilesbinyon It's always a pleasure to watch your videos Giles. You have a happy knack of combining wild camping and cooking competence with fascinating historical research and a great sense of humour! Doubtless some of our American cousins (and others overseas) will be doubled up with laughter when they learn of some of our UK laws. "Now let me get this straight... is it true that you Brits can buy any amount of camping gear, yet you are not allowed to camp in most areas of the UK? And what's that I hear about knives? You are not allowed to carry any blade longer than 3 inches (what's an inch, anyway) and it must be folding, not fixed, not locking? Isn't that potentially more dangerous to the user? And another thing... what about going naked in public ... apparently that is perfectly legal, unless someone complains?!" 🤣🤣🤣
@@TheTerryMarsh1 Ha ha !!! Absolutely !!! 🤣😂🤣😂 Love the way you put that - and yes, from the outside (and even from the inside 😂🤣) the Law does seem crazy sometimes !!! Cheers 😀🥃🥃👍
Thanks for watching and commenting. And it’s great to hear from a fellow sufferer. But we’ll just have to keep soldiering-on. ….. is it Lager or Bitter ? …. Cheers 🍺🍺 … 🤣😂🤣😂
Thanks very much - Ha ! Yeah, you could be right…. in fact I will have to do a lot more research into this which will ‘unfortunately’ require more time in the Pub ….oh boy … the things one does for science … 😉😉😉
@@gilesbinyon it certainly is Giles, its a difficult balance. I like your set up nice going light, i always take a lot of kit but have whittled things down as much as i can burrr you must be a warm sleeper all best Will 👍🍄🍻
Hi Giles, you had a tough yomp back up that hill from the pub. Hope the celeriac burger stayed put. How are you finding the new cooking pot? Is the overall size versus weight a good trade off? I noticed some nice traditional tiled rooofs on the houses that you journeyed past. Very nice to see.
Thanks very much Iain. Appreciated. Yeah, burger was held down (just) thank goodness !!! Yeah, I think the pot is usable and excellent for size and weight 👍 You’re right, plane clay tiles (originally hand made) would traditionally have been the roof covering of choice in this area (apart from thatch). Thx again 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon Hi Giles. Good to hear that the pot is proving useful and weight saving. I think the dehydrated veggies are a great idea too. It is very Interesting to see the variation in roofing materials that are used across the country. Slates are more common here in Wales, although many local agricultural buildings used to have clay tile roofs. I have pulled up quite a number from the ground when digging footings around old pig styes at home. All the best. Iain.
Another great video mate. I couldn’t wait to get home from work today and watch it. Have you tried a polish lavvu half for your shelter. I’m a bigger guy at 6’3 and have always wondered about the plash palakta and how I would fit. May I ask what you use for a ground sheet
Thanks very much. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, totally agree that the plash / Zeltbahn is on the small side - but I can just make it work - I’m only 5’6”. I have a Lavvu and it would be a bigger shelter. For now, I just like the options of a possible lean-to shelter or plough point. The ground sheet is a cut down plash palatka which has been heavily waxed for added robustness and waterproofing (did this on a hot sunny day outside - really helped the cotton canvas to soak up the wax). Cheers 😊👍
Thanks very much Dan - appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, I have used this pack a good few times before - it is not new but it is my smallest one I think. Cheers 😊👍
I’m a real country person at heart but I hate seeing those deer shooting platforms. Such a shame to kill deer. There over two million deer in the UK but I’d much rather many more deer and far less humans.
People who feel the need to shoot anything, let alone a defenceless creature just existing, have a thing called empathy missing from their lives. Not all people have it of course, but those that don't usually have something missing inside them that they would never admit to. Others see it though.
Thanks once again Keri. Appreciate your support and I hope you are well and able to get out too. No, I haven’t got the hang of ‘shrooms. I’m not a great forager any how and my lack of knowledge and confidence makes me a bit weary of fungi 🍄 I know my laziness is making me miss out - I should get up to speed with it really. Cheers Buddy 🍺🍺😊
Your mixture for your bannock had the consistency of putty or plastacine lol good idea though what your carrying food wise is similar to 12 century travellers ie flour dried peas n other veg
Thanks very much for watching and commenting. Yeah, it’s hard to get the bannock consistency right sometimes 😃 Thanks for that interesting point about the dried traveling food …. It’s deffo an easy way to carry it 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon lol the consistancy looked right to me I was just saying it looks like putty/plastacine which if you watch bread making videos its what kneaded dough looks like. I love the old style gear thanks mate
Thanks for watching the vid and commenting. Yeah, I believe some power packs incorporate a solar panel !!! But I’m not sure how effective they are 🤔 Cheers 😊👍
Thanks very much for watching and commenting. Home made firefighters are in the tin. Small cotton wool make-up pads saturated with old candle wax. Scrapped up they take a spark and burn for a while 😊👍
Superb, Giles. A two nighter in two great locations.
Sorry I’m late watching 😊
It amazes me no end how you can go so light.
Should carry a small folding solar panel, wind up/solar radio
or a solar power bank which can be charged from home first to charge phone..but a pub can be a nice excuse to charge the batteries... equipment and your own...good vid.👍

Yes .. having to quaff Ale and scoff down Burgers for a bit of Charge .. highly distressing .. 😏.

Tommy
Ha ha !!! Thanks as always Tommy - and I can imagine the looks you get from the (sweaty!) faces of your fellow hikers 🤣😂🤣😂
I expect the forest is getting cold and frosty now ….. and, more usefully, Granny free 😃😄👏👏👏 Cheers my Friend 🍺🍺

Yeah, the spring seems to have been ‘developed’ into some kind of game bird centre - slightly depressing 😐.
Dumplings were surprisingly pleasant - 👍👍Hoping you are managing to get out Mate despite these heavy rain days we’re getting. Take care 🥃🥃👍
That seemed a treck and a half to the pub! Thanks for all the effort you put in to bring us such enjoyable videos.
Thank you Michaela. Appreciate your kind support - makes all the hill trekking worthwhile !!! 🤣😁😊👍
Hi m8 it's great to see you out again it was such a different video you been out for 2 nights really enjoyed it thanks m8

Thank you very much Phillip. Appreciate those kind words and glad you enjoyed 😊👍
Excellent Giles, I do the bannock dumplings aswell. Also fallen foul of the fire being leeward of the shelter. Love the minimal old school kit dude
Thanks very much Nobby. Appreciate you watching and those kind words. Yeah, those dumplings ain’t half bad - unlike that b****y smoke !!! 😂🤣 Cheers😊🍺
Another great video and outing…Maybe try putting something under the front edge by your head of the tarp. The small opening should give you fresh air by your head or at least a small breeze to keep smoke off your face without making your body and legs and feet in the colder air. Have fun stay safe.
Thank you very much Kenneth - as always appreciate your support 😊
That’s very good thinking - I did have a bit of a fiddle with the shelter but couldn’t seem to improve things much. But always worth a try - hoping it won’t be as bad next time. Thx again 😊👍

Just catching up Giles. Nice camp. I have an owl neighbour who keeps me happy to hear him hooting through the night.
Thanks very much Mark. Yeah, there is something soothing about hearing an owl at night in the woods - just seems to be the correct order of things 😊👍
What a great way to spend a hot soak in the bath after a hard MTB ride. Quality stuff as usual, cheers.
Thanks very much - appreciated. Hope you had a soothing bath and you can get back out on the trail again soon 🚴🚴♂️👍 Cheers 🍺🍺
"I just hope the beer numbs the pain." I really empathised with you there, Giles :)
I had a funny thought as I was watching you pushing your way up the hills, thinking that you must have already done it all once, in order to set up the camera!
Nice video my friend, I enjoyed that as always.
Thanks Allen. Really appreciate you watching and commenting Mate. Looking forward to checking out your remembrance vid tonight. Cheers Bud 🍺🍺
I was pleased that it was quiet and had no bouncers on the door…..not sure they would always welcome the ‘wood smoke smelling, damp and slightly muddy, Old Man of the Woods’….😂🤣😂🤣
Excellent celeriac burger though 😊🍺🍺🍺🍺👍
Surprised you didn't zonk out after those pints and burger. I know I would have. 😴

A great adventure! I watch your videos over and over. Thanks for all that you do!

Glad you understand the effort I have to put in to support local businesses - I must be some kind of martyr 🤣😂🤣😂
Always best to scrape off the boots before entering - there is usually a boot scraper or somewhere to do it. But the Pubs in the videos are all in areas of hiking trails and so (in summers months at least) are used to walkers coming in.
Yeah, I was pushing myself up those hills a bit hard and at one point felt my lunch - a beautiful celeriac burger - would make another appearance 🤣😂🤣😂
I bet it’s turning chilly where you are Mate.

On the subject of warmth, following your example I recently lent a couple of sheepskins
to a grandson and his friend when they went on a four-day hike in Algonquin.

Cheers.😊👍
Great vid, thanks. Just thinking that I would of hidden rucksack while away at the pub as it is a very quiet spot.
Thank you very much. And you are absolutely right. It would have been safe to stash the kit there and it did cross my mind. But I just felt a bit happier taking it along and it’s pretty comfortable (10kg approx). Cheers 😊👍

Ha ! Thanks very much - yeah getting the hang of the shelter set ups but the ground levels and the tree positions usually b****r things up !!!😂🤣
Yeah, got through the cold last year with the ‘skin of my teeth’. Will see how this year pans out - but may need some wool wrapped around me !
Yeah, this pack is a bit more comfortable than the bum dragger - although that one is not too bad either !
Thx again - enjoy your summer Buddy 🔆🍺🍺👍
Have you ever thought about trying a different old school tarp. Just for a bit of variance. ?
@@moorshound3243 I agree.
I keep the (carbon steel) blade stropped regularly and it can cope with everything except perhaps battoning…..everything is a compromise 😐
Thx again Terry - have a good week 🍺🍺👍
Cheers 😀🥃🥃👍
I know what you mean Giles, I hate having to go to the pub. 😂
Thanks for watching and commenting. And it’s great to hear from a fellow sufferer. But we’ll just have to keep soldiering-on. ….. is it Lager or Bitter ? …. Cheers 🍺🍺 … 🤣😂🤣😂
i was curious if the coconut oil would make a substitute for suet or fat for dumpling, looks like i am going to give creamed coconut a try.
Cheers John. Yeah, creamed coconut sounds an interesting option to rub into the flour. Thx for watching and commenting 😊👍
Good one Giles. Do you think the few beers could have helped with the good nights 💤
Thanks very much - Ha ! Yeah, you could be right…. in fact I will have to do a lot more research into this which will ‘unfortunately’ require more time in the Pub ….oh boy … the things one does for science … 😉😉😉
Nice idea without synthetic s but most clothing is dyed with synthetic dyes
Thanks very much as always Will. And yeah, you make a very good point. It’s always a blimming compromise isn’t it !!! Cheers 🍺🍺👍
@@gilesbinyon it certainly is Giles, its a difficult balance. I like your set up nice going light, i always take a lot of kit but have whittled things down as much as i can burrr you must be a warm sleeper all best Will 👍🍄🍻
@@willstonvelo8100 just have to rely on the fire to get through the night 🥶Cheers Will👍
Just gave you a sub, liking the videos

Thank you very much for the support 51foxy - appreciated 😊👍
Cheers 😊👍
Is that a new backpack giles or did you dye the old 1 ?
Thanks very much Dan - appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, I have used this pack a good few times before - it is not new but it is my smallest one I think. Cheers 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon never miss a vid mate 👍
I am new to your programme. The view in the beginning, what hills were they in the distance? North or South Downs? I like your methods.
Thanks for watching and commenting Albert. Appreciated. Yeah, views at the beginning were towards North Downs. Cheers 😊
I’m a real country person at heart but I hate seeing those deer shooting platforms. Such a shame to kill deer. There over two million deer in the UK but I’d much rather many more deer and far less humans.
Thanks again Bumble, and yeah, deer are just majestic aren’t they. Always sad to see a dead one. Take care and cheers ⛺️👍
But Venison is delicious.
@@bushcraftoz2 but I remember it can be very rich 🤔
Nothing gets done without something dying
People who feel the need to shoot anything, let alone a defenceless creature just existing, have a thing called empathy missing from their lives. Not all people have it of course, but those that don't usually have something missing inside them that they would never admit to.
Others see it though.
Great Video Giles, do you ever forage for wild mushrooms on your adventures?
I love the old style gear thanks mate
good morning hope your ok could you tell me the name of the fire bowl you use please

When I was on appalachian trail it carry a power pack to charge up my phone
Thanks for watching the vid and commenting. Yeah, I believe some power packs incorporate a solar panel !!! But I’m not sure how effective they are 🤔 Cheers 😊👍
Great video. What you use in the tin to light the fire?
Thanks very much for watching and commenting. Home made firefighters are in the tin. Small cotton wool make-up pads saturated with old candle wax. Scrapped up they take a spark and burn for a while 😊👍
