Thanks very much Allan. Appreciate your support. Love the multifunction kit expression!!! As you probably know, it’s good to have bits of kit with more than one use - cheers 😊
A grand camp there Giles 👍🏻 even with all the rain and soaking wet ground. I've just had a weekend camping up in Suffolk and met up with Gavin from Barney's Bimbles - naturally the conversation turned to discussions about you and your camps as we are both big admirers. All the best to you and yours 🙏🏻 Cheers, Paul C.
Thanks very much Paul. I do appreciate you watching and that’s a lovely comment - great to hear you connected up with Gavin. I enjoy his vids - he seems like a really lovely guy. Hope the camp went well and all the best to you and yours also my Friend 😊👍
Thanks so much Allen - appreciated. Ha ha !!! I doubt I could beat a black bear at anything ….. apart, perhaps, from running to the Pub before it closes !!! 🍺🍺😂🤣😂🤣 Cheers Allen 😊👍
Lovely to see you again, Giles, out on another camp. I've actually managed to get to see this one soon after it was posted, this time. I'm always up early working on the computer at six on a Sunday, but work is generally quiet at that time and so I can fill in the gaps with videos. Thank you once again for taking the time to record and share your experiences. I never tire of seeing your camp set-ups, woodland wanderings, and campfire cooking. Yes, the shorter days are upon us, and the temperature is dropping. I know what you mean about the difficulties of having less daytime at this time of year. Early in the year I went out, I think it was February, and the hours of daylight were outnumbered by the darkess by two to one, so I didn't get to do a lot of what I'd hoped; the light just went and before I knew it it was getting dark again and I had to start thinking about settling down for the night. I had a book to read so I was prepared for the hours of darkness. I must note your interesting use of the verb 'wazz'. In your dialect it seems to mean to 'put' or 'add', though I've only heard it used in a different context, in phrases such as, "I'll just nip for a quick wazz." :) It's great to see you getting out and about reasonably regularly, it really does help me when I'm getting cravings and urges to get out myself, while at the same time inspiring me and encouraging me to plan my next one. By the way, my new sheepskin arrived yesterday, as a birthday present from my partner. It's quite a shaggy, black, icelandic one, lovely and warm. It will be replacing my old synthetic roll-up mat. Is that a new belt-pouch you have?It looks very handy. I've recently been making cotton drawstring-bags made out of old trousers, using an old-school antique hand-operated Singer sewing machine. It's very quick and convenient to use, and it seems so much sturdier than the modern plastic ones. I even had to look hard to find non-synthetic thread for it! Polyester really has taken over! Anyway I'll post this comment now, it's taken me four hours to watch the video and then write the comment, in between my work obligations. Thanks again for sharing, very much appreciated, as always. Take care, Giles, until the next one.🌳🌿🍃🍂
Thanks very much Adrian. As always your kind support and great comments are very much appreciated. Crikey !!! starting work on the computer so early on a Sunday !!! I hope you get days off during the week. Great you got your sheepskin. And it sounds like an extra special one. I hope you get lots of good use out of it and it keeps you snug. Mine is rather ordinary but seems to do pretty well for comfort and warmth. I reckon as good as a lower range self inflating type of mat - I think anyway. I’ve often thought about an old style sewing machine too. I end up doing a lot of hand sewing when I customise gear. A basic but good and strong machine would open up many possibilities. Anyway take care my Friend, thanks for watching and I hope work is not too onerous 👍🍺🍺
I say Giles Old Chap! Indeed, another splendid camp behind enemy lines. Gloriously dug in for king and country with the home fires burning I might add! I am so glad you mentioned the short days and long nights as it's so difficult to get out and indeed everyone in the UK and other northern countries must all be thinking as such. So, I do commend you and also envy you at the same time and say bravo Old Chap for getting out and fighting the good fight. I always look forward to your transmissions on the wireless as do all of the troops to keep sprits high. Ruddy good show Old Bean. Tally-Ho! Best Steve P-S: I love your intro and outro music; it gets the old leg going every time you see.
Thanks awfully Steve Old Chap. Jolly good show of you to watch and comment on the latest transmission. Very much appreciate your kind support Old Chap. Absolutely spot on about these long nights Old Bean. Need the Troops to dig in for a few more weeks and then we’ll be in the clear Old Chap - ‘should all be over by Christmas’. Wishing you the best of British Luck Old Bean, and thanks once again for keeping the support lines open for us here. HURRAH !!!
Love how your still camping out with minimum kit it must be warmer down south as its freezing here in Newcastle always a good watch Giles keep at it mate atvb Jimmy 😎😎👍👍
Thanks Jimmy. Always appreciated Mate. Yeah, it’s getting tougher camping with the cold and the long nights make camping with friends more appealing than going solo. You have the right idea with Roney 👍😊 Looking forward to catching up on a couple of your videos soon too Mate
Cheers Keith. Thank you for watching and always appreciate your support my Friend. Hoping you are well and enjoyed this Sunday morning breakfast and tea and vid too !!! Cheers 😊👍
Hi Giles, Been following your videos for some time now, really enjoy the simplicity of your set up 👍. Was wondering where you got your Gaiters from?, thinking they must be tough or you would not be using them!. Thanks again for the great videos, looking forward to your next one 👍 Kind Regards Les
@@leslieharding8560 thx very much Les - appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, these gaiters are ex-British army I believe (circa 1980’s or 90’s possibly). I have occasionally spotted them in army surplus and online. They have been good. Cheers 👍
@@gilesbinyon Thanks Giles for the heads up, I will have a search on line for some, good luck with your future camp outs in this damp miserable weather!...roll on Springtime 🙂
Another crackin video Mr Binyon! The missus and I enjoy our regular fix of your particular brand of synthetic free outdoor shenanigans. Always inspiring, always informative, and always at the top of our 'to watch' list. Keep up the outstanding work!
I have learned two things since watching this channel. If you need to get somewhere, set your mind to it and stomp it out like Giles Binion! At the end of camp don't forget to do the Giles Binion Waltz! 😁👍👍👍👍👍
Ha ha !!! Thanks very much Robert - but sometimes, especially during the hot weather, I need to slow down a bit !!! Ha ha - yeah always do the Leave No Trace ‘Waltz’ 😂🤣😂🤣 thanks again Buddy 😊👍
Another lovely camp Giles, looked like it was a good shout to cut the hike short and hunker down before the rain. It's certainly getting colder though. I don't know why but I do enjoy the colder camps, you get a greater sense of achievement. Thanks as always for sharing 👍
Thanks very much Gavin. Appreciate your kind support my Friend. Oh yeah, it’s only gonna get colder now. Sounds like you might be a warm sleeper and enjoy the colder weather. I tend to struggle in the colder months but I’m always looking for ways to make the night more comfortable. Cheers 🍺🍺👍
Thanks sir for another great video it's good to see you out there I've gathered a tent of sleeping bag and I'm just building up enough to go car camping to start. I appreciate your efforts the filming in the editing. Be safe leave no Trace with you in spirit always Arizona Dave
Thanks very much as always and I hope you are doing well Arizona Dave. Hope you can complete your kit and get out car camping soon. And in not too cold conditions 🤞🤞🤞Take care my Friend 🇺🇸🇬🇧
Nicely tucked in there on that spot, Giles. Lovely woodland view out from under the shelter too! It’s nice to have nice steaks etc, but you cannot beat simple foods out in the woods. I still and always will, salute your bed style. A much better man than me 🫡 Have a good week kind sir! 👋🏼😉
Thanks very much Tim. As always Buddy, appreciate the support. Yeah, my bed style quite often comes with a disturbed and chilly night ‘sleep’ 🥶 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂 Have a great week yourself Mate 🍺🍺👍
Hi Giles a enjoyable camp nice and chilly sitting around the campfire every time I wished I was sitting beside you chatting about nothing important 🙂 cheers Tim
What a treat to wake up to another great video from you Giles! Looks like you had a wet and muddy start there, winter feels just around the corner doesn't it? Impressed how you vaulted up onto that trig point, especially with a full pack! Perhaps I'll try that in a future video for comparison, which will likely be a lot less dignified. Your shelter looked very homely, especially during those shots in the rain. Have you ever experimented with one of those self feeding fire setups, where the logs get fed in automatically? Perhaps that's difficult to do when you're trying to keep the fire small / contained (and of course safe as it's so close to where you're sleeping!). I think the basic premise is a sort of ramp either side of the fire, with a few logs lined up, the idea being that when the one on the bottom burns the next one up in the queue rolls down. There's a few videos on youtube explaining it better than I can here!
Thanks very much John - appreciating your support my Friend. Yeah, I thought I would show off on the trig point. But I forgot how gusty it was and there were a few wobbles - it could have all ended in tears !!! 😂🤣😂🤣 Yes, I watched a few vids on the self-feeding fire. Very interesting concept but I’ve never tried it. I could in the garden perhaps. I try to keep my camping ‘footprint’ as minimal as possible and my fire small. The self feeding fire seems to be, by it’s nature, slightly bigger and more timber hungry than I possibly might prefer (and probably not too stealthy !!!). But who knows … one day perhaps …. Take care and thx again 🍷🍷👍
👍👍👍 Good Morning Giles .. As usual, you did not disappoint 😊. Yep, it's getting colder and wetter now with dry detritus more difficult to forage. My forest is extremely wet with not too much 'stuff' lying around (the Swiss are pretty efficient in keeping their forests clean .. as with much else 😁). I've built up a small stock of balcony-dried 'forage' that comes in handy. Best time for forage is after the wood cutters have been doing a 'tree cull'. They're pretty accommodating with cutting me some nice bits which I can then dissect further. There is currently a wind fallen tree on one of my Mutt-Walk Routes, partially blocking the path and which I have been eyeing for some time .. waiting for it to self-dry. However, with the wet and cold now in place, I'll have to now get out and save some of it from freezing 😏. The sound of Titanium as with Aluminium and Stainless Steel .. each with it's own unique Resonance. Your Titan Pot seems to be doing fine. Watching your cook-up has me feeling peckish. Time to get the Malti-Poo out on her morning constitutional .. she is starting to give me 'the look'. Thereafter the Sunday 'Brunch' .. she has her chair at the table for her 'titbits'. Very well behaved she is .. no snatching or any such barbarism. A nice share my friend .. am looking forward to the next. Take care .. Tommy
Thank you kindly as always Tommy. And I hope you had a nice mutt walk and the forest was not too wet. It’s also very wet here - in fact this morning I had to take my lady mutt walking around the park instead and still got wet feet !!! But like yours she is so well behaved - just part of the family really !!! (But would be unfair to take her wild camping at her age and feeling the cold etc) Hope you manage to get some foraged timber which is not too wet or even frozen 🥶 Enjoy your brunch and thx again for all your kind words 🍺🍺👍
I do not mind returning to a favorite site or to using a favorite and functional camp setup! You found some new camera angles to use this time and they were effective.
Cheers Andrew. Appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, I’m always looking out to improve things for a decent night sleep especially during winter 🥶 Cheers 👍
Thanks very much Catherine. Yeah, haven’t we had some rain 🌧️!!! Ha ! My tiny pack has more room on the outside than the inside ;) Take care and thx again 😊👍
Hi Giles, new subscriber here. Love watching you going about your camp routine and especially your lovely plant based meals, so refreshing not have to sit through someone eating steak. Keep treading lightly on the earth 🌎
Another enjoyable back to basics video. Hats off to you for the balancing act on the Trig Point..not sure I could do that even without wearing a loaded Pack. 😀 The colours in the Beechwoods that you walked through in the first few minutes are beautiful. 👍
Thank you kindly John, appreciate your support. Yeah, nearly came a cropper on the trig point with the strong gusting wind 😳. The beech leaves are a bold colour this time of year 😊👍
Nice one Giles . Another great watch there mate. Love watching the little intricacies of the way you do things. Like the look of the plash palatka, probably a bit small for me. A lot of hours of darkness . Take care Giles 👌🏕
Apologies for my tardy reply, but better late than never. I must admit, I have been distracted by a Young Unicyclist called Ed Pratt who got me binge viewing his around the World trip plus, a couple of spy TV serials and you find yourself in arrears with your favourite subscription channels. YES, I saw it and know what you're talking about with the low but above daytime freezing temperatures, the wet, damp and greyness of it all and yet, you get out there and never fail to impress with your simple old school system that works for you a treat. Keep doing what you are doing for as long as it works for you.
Thanks very much Robert. A really nice comment and appreciate you watching - I know there is some excellent stuff out there on YT and it is hard to get it all in. So I do appreciate you watching and commenting as always Mate. Hoping you and yours are well. Take care and keep warm 😊👍
Nice one good Sir. Its tough with all this rain we have had. I was out last night with Marc and it was a very wet pack up this morning. Regards JB (Allan)
Time to kick back with a small-ish Glenlivet and de-stress!😊 ... Haven't been out much recently, (work) and what you do is so similar to what I like to do, ( even your preferred kit is similar but slightly different in that you are more of a non-synthetic fundamentalist than I am!😂) so watching your films is next best thing to being out myself! .. Great stuff again mate.👍
Thanks very much as always Tannahill. And glad if this vid (plus a nice glass of whiskey !!!) helps de-stress 😃. Sorry you haven’t been able to get out much recently yourself but hope you do get out soon. Cheers 🥃🥃👍🤞
Mate! You need either one of those 'Onesies' one piece warm jumpsuits to sleepin or get a dog! The Aborigines used to gauge how cold it was by how many dogs they'd need to sleep with. A 3 dog night was a cold one! I've still to watch you caught in the rain with that set up. I think you'd be ok unless there was a major windshift. As always, enjoyed the show.
Thanks very much indeed - always appreciate your kind support. And yeah, I have a dog 🐶👍 but she feels the cold worse than me Ha ha ! So it would be unfair to take her wild camping. But I defo understand why it would be great to have a dog (or 2 !) beside you on a cold night. Yeah, I got this camp set up just before the rain started 👍Thx again 😊🍺🍺👍
Another fine adventure my new friend! And I appreciated the video focus on your shelter set up. I had a very good idea how you set it all up from previous videos, but in this episode I get better picture of your ground cloth, how high you set your ridge line on the tree, etc I'm curious though, you film with white light and that light really does light up your camp site, yet you use a red light on your head lamp. Why the difference? As I told you before I'm my last comment, I do model my camping after your "style" pretty closely. I use an 8x8 tarp and I'm not dedicated to natural fibers but I set it up in plow point as you do. I have a caribou hide instead of sheep, I have the same gaiters. But probably most importantly: you are vegetarian, I'm strict carnivore. So our cook pots are a bit different as well. Will you need to give up your camping in the winter? I don't see how you can tolerate much colder temps with half a wool blanket. English weather is pretty similar to ours in Ohio. I like camping in frigid temps. No bugs! Thanks for all you do!
Thanks very much Floyd - your kind support much appreciated. Yeah, the good old plough point setup - just like yourself I noticed from the photo. You may not have used a ridge line ? I find with the old cotton canvas capes it just provides a bit more support and lessens blowing about. Yeah, real trouble filming at night - just using the light on my phone camera otherwise nothing could be seen. The head torch set to red means I can see what I’m doing but it doesn’t blast out the camera either. Will keep persisting into winter but always looking for ways to make a better nights sleep 🥶 Good camping Buddy 🏕️🇺🇸👍
Great video as always Giles - I enjoyed a peaceful Sunday morning with a coffee and your inspiring work. Did you know that you can now buy 'all natural fibre' sleeping bags? I'm amazed at how little water you seem to carry - I'd need 2-3 litres I guess. Also that you light fires (small ones I know) and never seem to attract the attention of angry landowners - what's the secret?
Thanks very much Sean, appreciate you watching and commenting. I had looked into a natural fibre bag about a year ago. Looked nice but very bulky and also rather expensive. And yes I really barely carry enough water - you’re right. I just get by one night and sometimes get home a little dehydrated I think. Yeah, keep the fire having minimum impact on the environment also keeps it stealthy. Thx again 😊👍
Nice overnighter Giles, You'll have to start packing some kind of extra thermal gear soon if you are going to camp through the winter, it could be a cold one. The idea of using natural materials is more appealing to me as I get older. I was camping in my hot tent made from sil nylon recently, and it really was a bit like being inside a plastic bag:) Take care and all the best Sandy
Thanks very much indeed Sandy - really appreciate your support. Yeah, am always looking for ways to have a warmer and more comfortable night. But it’s hard without adding lots more weight and bulk to the kit. Interesting you are leaning more towards natural fibres as an option. I know you already have a Polish Lavvu in use. They are a great little cotton canvas tent aren’t they. Although rather dark inside, they certainly do not feel like camping in a plastic bag 😂🤣😂 Thx again Sandy. Keep well and keep warm my Friend 😊👍
Giles, maybe a short hike, but I enjoyed this video a lot. I love the sound of rain on a tent, especially when I’m sleeping. Yeah, I know it can be a pain packing up wet/damp equipment. Your dinner 🍛 looked really good. Noticed that you were wearing a pouch on your waist. Is that a new piece of equipment? Just curious. I have some 1/4” hemp rope and I’m going to put a eye splice in one end and try to make a ridge line like yours. What size is the zeltbahn you use? The Russian one I have is about 5’6” square. Well, another relaxing good one. I look forward to the next one. Cheers 🍻 my friend.
Thanks very much as always Steven. Yeah, rain can make camping cosy … when it happens at the right time !!! 🤣😂 Yeah, I’ve added an old army mess tin pouch to my belt - keeps a light jumper out of the backpack and also handy for phone power pack and snacks on the move 👍 Hemp rope is usually the best - well done - will make a super ridge line. Yeah, all these old type military capes do come up small - usually just under 6’ square - by up to a couple inches. It makes it harder to get full rain cover for people over a certain height. But I get away with it being only 5’6” . Check it out with some practice setups in the garden / park ⛺️👍
Congrats on another great video Giles. Did you need to get up in the night to saw more logs? I intend to join a walking group tomorrow, for a 12-mile hike. No camping planned as yet though. Seasonal celebrations are almost upon us. I shall be singing in three events this Christmas. After that, I'll be spending time with family and friends. I wonder whether you'll be camping during December?
Thanks very much as always Terry. Yeah, I just cut a few sticks before bedding down - the nights are so long. I hope the hike went well and with no blisters. Hiking with others is certainly great fun. Do you sing with a choir or solo ? Good luck in any case my Friend. I am hoping to get out in December. Sometimes ‘life’ does make it harder to get out but generally I am lucky enough to have the time. 😊👍 Thx again as always Terry 👍
@@gilesbinyon Thanks Giles. These days, I feel more comfortable singing with a choir or smaller vocal group, though I have occasionally sung solo. In the past I have also formed vocal groups of varying sizes, from four (one person per part) to over 100 singers. The hike went very well thanks ... in good company, with no blisters, just muddy feet!
Good morning from New Orleans. Happened upon your videos a couple months ago, and liked them. Love hiking and camping and watching others enjoying it also. If you don’t mind, what brand of tarp are you using, and you have me hooked on your videos. Keep them coming
Thanks very much Randy - really appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, the tarp is the NVA military cape. Ex- East German army stuff left over from the Cold War era really. Cotton canvas, versatile and pretty rugged. Also pretty cheap !!! Extremely similar is the Russian Plash Palatka. Disadvantage of being rather small (6’ square). Cheers 🇺🇸🇬🇧😊
Hey Giles, always a great camp out mate, as I said before i love the uniformity of your videos. Each time i swear to myself I'll put a kit together that I'll use as a base. You probably said sometime, but whats the main kind of material you have, is it cotton canvas? Cheers Giles.
Thanks as always for your kind support Chris. Yeah, cotton canvas is the material for my shelter (and rain cape) and although heavier than a synthetic equivalent it is robust and slightly warmer too. Cheers Buddy 😊👍
Hello Giles, just found your channel and really enjoying the alternative kit you use. Quick question, what are those two pieces you set up in front of your fire?
Thanks very much to both of you for commenting. And yeah, Mr yeti dodger you are right. Home made fire guard pieces - light weight and non-flammable- just make for a easier nights rest. Cheers 🍺🍺🍺👍
I've seen quite a few of your videos and I know that as it gets colder, you'll use half a wool blanket. I'd be interested to know how low a temperature roughly you've camped with this set-up. Not necessarily comfortably lol.. Thanks. Always enjoy and I take a lot from your videos.
Thanks very much Mally. Yeah, I’m always looking for ways to have a more comfortable night but without adding bulk/weight to the pack. Think I have made it through a few nights just above freezing (0 Celsius) but, as you say, uncomfortably 🥶Cheers 😊👍
Thanks for the nice video. I admire you for sleeping like that, I could never do it without the comfort of some sort of blanket or something over me. I have one question - how do you manage to wake every hour to tend the fire and not sleep through for say 3-4 hours. Many thanks. 👍
Thanks very much as always. Appreciate your support. I am usually woken by the cold when the fire dies down 🥶 !!! So this is quite frequently !!! Thx again 😊
This time of year we get a lot of rain and mud on paths and bridal ways , so it's important to have some good boots and walking sticks to help stop the slip slide and fall over like sometimes do. Ha Ha . Giles .
Ha ha !!! Yeah, I wouldn’t want to end up in some of the puddles we have around here at the moment !!! A walking stick can be useful in difficult terrain you’re right. Thx for watching as always Owen 😊👍
This was a great watch sir! I really like that simple shelter style! It suits that tarp well, especially when you pull out the sides like you do. Hey! I was wondering… How do you get on with so little water. If I’m really hiking like you do, i need at least 3liters just for drinking and then another one or two for cooking. I’ve just always been impressed at how little water you carry. Great stuff Giles!! Tganks again!! NQU
Thanks very much as always NQU - appreciated. Glad you like the basic setup. And yeah, you are quite right I should carry more water. I think I do get back from some trips a bit dehydrated which is probably not healthy. You are carrying a much more realistic amount. And with a comfortable and reasonably large pack you can probably hike in comfort 😊👍
Hi, just came across your channel a few days ago and I love it! Thanks for sharing. Sorry if you've been asked this question before but what is your stove/firepit/cooker called and can you still buy them? If not any alternative you can suggest? Much appreciated.
Thanks very much for watching and commenting Lucy. Yeah, the best little fire pit I find is a medium sized vegetable steamer (about 29cm diameter). Quite strong, lightweight and cheap. Unscrew the centre piece. You can also knock out the little studs/legs and replace with longer removable bolts (use wing nuts) for easy packing etc Thx again 😊👍
Thanks very much as always - your kind support appreciated. Yeah, I’m always looking at ways of a warmer and better nights sleep. But will always try to have a fire with as minimal impact as possible. And, as you say, will not rule out bringing along some more in the way of wool - it’s just a bit unfortunate it adds a lot to pack size/weight 🤔🤔🤔 thx again 😊👍
@@gilesbinyon I understand on the fire impact thing. I take a small army entrenching tool to dig out a big clod of earth to put aside, after I've put out the fire & made a slurry I pop the clod back on top step it down, when I return weeks or months later the plants are growing you can't tell any fire has ever been there, I do kind of need a nice big bed of coals when staying out as I have lately becom addicted proper buried jacket potatoes hehe. I just don't want you to freeze to death is all Sir. Also I have had success this year by making a wool blanket sleeping bag, I just whip stitched along the bottom & part way up the side of an old wool blanket then turned it inside out, it seems to work very well as you don't come unwrapped in the night like you do with just the blanket, also not having any zips to jam on you when you need a pee in the night is a blessing, you can pair it with a silk sleeping bag liner, they are expensive but small & lightweight. Just some ideas stay warm & keep cranking out the great content. Take care.
@@moorshound3243 thanks very much. Yeah, real jacket spuds are deffo nice 👍😃 And your wool sleeping bag sounds great. As you say, it’s hard to keep wrapped up in a blanket if you move around while sleeping. I recently acquired a wool sleeping bad with a short metal zip - ex Greek army it seems. Not sure how much it weighs yet but it’s not too bulky really. Thanks again for your constructive comments - appreciated. Stay warm out there 😊👍
Sunday supplemented with Giles on a hike, what's not to like. Was the trig point moving as you climbed it Giles? or was that an illusion caused by the camera moving in the wind? Or perhaps I'm just going a little mad.
Thanks very much. Appreciate you watching and commenting as always - and I hope you are doing well ultrarunner 😊 Ha ha ! It certainly felt like that trig point was moving !!! Glad I hadn’t had a Pub visit in this video !!! 🤣😂🤣😂 Actually think it was me swaying about due to buffeting by the wind 💨😂🤣😂🤣 Thx again - always appreciated 👍
Just curious, Why don't you use a wool blanket more often when you're out camping? You wouldn't have to wake up every hour to tend the fire then because wool blankets keep you warm even when it's pretty cold.
Thanks very much for watching and commenting. I tend to move about in my sleep and a blanket tangles or unravels leaving cold spots 🫤 I would probably still need a fire with one wool blanket when it is cold - but I reckon 2 or 3 would take you down below freezing without a fire ⛺️🔥😊👍
Once it starts getting cold i always end up using the two titanium bottles i have as hot water bottles, really makes a difference, bonus i don't have to wait so long for the water to boil in the morning for my endless cuppas, lol.
Thanks very much for watching and subscribing Roy. Appreciated. This is not Dorset (though we do camp and hike there - beautiful). It’s South Downs. Cheers
Hello Giles. On the sleeping front. Did you know that you can get Merino sleeping bags (not knitted but more of a "sheepskin bag") They're on sale here in Poland and probably elsewhere as well. Not cheap and am unsure of the weight but I reckon one would not come out to much more than your current sheepskin plus meagre covering (when you use one at all). I can send you a link if you like. Not cheap, but a vast improvement in warmth and no synthetics in sight.
Thank you kindly Jacek. Appreciate you watching and that’s a really interesting comment. I am not aware of these Merino wool sleeping bags. They sound like a very interesting non-synthetic option. If you have the link handy and have a spare minute, I would love to see it please (my email address is on my channel home page I think - I’m not sure 🤔 if it’s possible to put a link in the comments?). Thanks once again - keep safe and warm Buddy 😊👍
Thank you very much for watching and bringing that to my attention Spencer. Crikey !!! I have no explanation for that unnatural movement occurring there !!! When I get a chance I’ll try on the laptop to see if I can make some sense of it - a little spooky to be honest. It was filmed on my iPhone SE 2020, but doubt if it’s a ‘digital or software phenomenon’ because it would then occur at other occasions too I think. Thx again 👍
Thank you very much for watching and commenting. Yeah, someone else spotted that too and I just can’t explain what it is ? 😳 It is a little unnerving though !!! 😯Cheers
@@gilesbinyon I AM GOING TO ORDER MY 10-paNEL WINDSCREEN and my collapsible steam basket. Forget about the Dakota fire-hole: a lot of wasted calories and sweat !!
Cheers Doug. Yeah, the truckers hitch is a great knot. But I just use a ‘no knot’ on natural fibre line because (due to water absorption) it does not jam up in the morning. Thx again Buddy 🇺🇸🇬🇧
Just got in from a lovely rainy hike and then greeted with a new Giles film, perfect.
Thanks very much yeti dodger. Very kind words 😊Cheers 🍺🍺👍

In your dialect it seems to mean to 'put' or 'add', though I've only heard it used in a different context, in phrases such as, "I'll just nip for a quick wazz." :)
It's great to see you getting out and about reasonably regularly, it really does help me when I'm getting cravings and urges to get out myself, while at the same time inspiring me and encouraging me to plan my next one.
Superb. Take care in the colder weather ahead!
Thanks very much Mike. Much appreciated 😊👍
Very inspirational as always Giles. Thank you.
Thx very much Colin. Appreciated 😊👍
Breakfast with a new video from Giles. What a great way to start a Sunday! Thanks for bringing us along on your adventures mate.
Thank you kindly for watching and making such a positive comment. It’s very much appreciated 😊👍
Tally-Ho! Best Steve
P-S: I love your intro and outro music; it gets the old leg going every time you see.
HURRAH !!!
That was a great camp Giles👏👌😎 Thanks for taking us along👍KTF🙏
Thanks very much as always Marty - very kind of you to watch and comment - cheers 😊👍
That was a very nice camp my friend! Love the vintage gear. Thanks for sharing 🤠
Thank you very much Herb Smith. Glad you like the old school type stuff and thx for the comment 😊👍

Hi Giles,
Been following your videos for some time now, really enjoy the simplicity of your set up 👍.
Was wondering where you got your Gaiters from?, thinking they must be tough or you would not be using them!.
Thanks again for the great videos, looking forward to your next one 👍
Kind Regards
Les
@@leslieharding8560 thx very much Les - appreciate you watching and commenting. Yeah, these gaiters are ex-British army I believe (circa 1980’s or 90’s possibly). I have occasionally spotted them in army surplus and online. They have been good. Cheers 👍
@@gilesbinyon Thanks Giles for the heads up, I will have a search on line for some, good luck with your future camp outs in this damp miserable weather!...roll on Springtime 🙂
Very enjoyable to watch. Really like your style of camping.👍👍
Thanks very much Mark - appreciated. I am looking forward to watching your diy hot tent stove in action video. Cheers 😊👍
Another crackin video Mr Binyon! The missus and I enjoy our regular fix of your particular brand of synthetic free outdoor shenanigans. Always inspiring, always informative, and always at the top of our 'to watch' list. Keep up the outstanding work!
Thank you so much Team Gollum for such a lovely comment. Glad you both enjoy the vids and thx for such positive words about them. 😊👍

Cheers 🍺🍺👍

Yes, I watched a few vids on the self-feeding fire.
👍👍👍
Good Morning Giles ..
(But would be unfair to take her wild camping at her age and feeling the cold etc)
Hope you manage to get some foraged timber which is not too wet or even frozen 🥶 Enjoy your brunch and thx again for all your kind words 🍺🍺👍

A satisfying watch as always, even in damp conditions. Noticing that there is more tied on outside your rucksack than inside it these days!

Hi Giles, new subscriber here. Love watching you going about your camp routine and especially your lovely plant based meals, so refreshing not have to sit through someone eating steak. Keep treading lightly on the earth 🌎
Thank you very much indeed Zoe. Appreciate your support and so glad you like the plant based bushcraft camping. Take care 😊👍
Cheers Mark. Appreciate your great support Buddy. Yeah, these long nights can be a little bit challenging. Take care mate 😊👍
Thanks very much Allan. Appreciate your support Bud. Yeah, this blimmin rain makes the filming so much harder 🤔 thx again 👍

Thanks very much indeed Smokey. Yeah, I’m always looking at possible ways to have a warmer night sleep. Cheers 😊👍
Like your style simple cheap minimal.
Thanks very much Barry. Yeah, amazing what a few bits of basic reliable (and not expensive) kit can do !!! Cheers 😊👍
Cheers 🥃🥃👍🤞
Brilliant!!!
Cheers Paul - appreciated 😊👍
I had a very good idea how you set it all up from previous videos, but in this episode I get better picture of your ground cloth, how high you set your ridge line on the tree, etc
I'm curious though, you film with white light and that light really does light up your camp site, yet you use a red light on your head lamp.
Will keep persisting into winter but always looking for ways to make a better nights sleep 🥶
Good camping Buddy 🏕️🇺🇸👍
I was camping in my hot tent made from sil nylon recently, and it really was a bit like being inside a plastic bag:)
Take care and all the best
Sandy
Thanks very much indeed Sandy - really appreciate your support. Yeah, am always looking for ways to have a warmer and more comfortable night. But it’s hard without adding lots more weight and bulk to the kit.
Interesting you are leaning more towards natural fibres as an option. I know you already have a Polish Lavvu in use. They are a great little cotton canvas tent aren’t they. Although rather dark inside, they certainly do not feel like camping in a plastic bag 😂🤣😂 Thx again Sandy. Keep well and keep warm my Friend 😊👍
Not me I am 80 & am switching to state of the art synthetics. these things are made from oil. I sure dig having light clean gear. 🤠
Yeah, I’ve added an old army mess tin pouch to my belt - keeps a light jumper out of the backpack and also handy for phone power pack and snacks on the move 👍
Hemp rope is usually the best - well done - will make a super ridge line.
THANK YOU friend for a wonderful video 👣🌲🌲🌲
Thank you Ofer - always appreciated 😊👍🌲🌲🌲
The first thing you did was make a baton, same here.🤠
Thanks very much David. Ha ! Yeah, priority is always shelter setup when the weather is dodgy !!! Thx again for watching and commenting 😊👍
Hi ya 😊 New subscriber here. I do like a bit of camping and wild camping myself. 😃
Thank you very much Rachel. Very much appreciated 😊
Hello Giles, just found your channel and really enjoying the alternative kit you use. Quick question, what are those two pieces you set up in front of your fire?
it stops any logs that have rolled off the fire from rolling onto the sleeping area.
I always enjoy your videos.
I can't help but wonder why you don't have a bigger fire now it's winter, or why you have ditched the wool blanket?
Appreciate you watching and commenting as always - and I hope you are doing well ultrarunner 😊
Ha ha !
Thanks for watching and commenting John. And that’s a great idea - I’ve heard others say similar. Like you - l’m also a tea addict !!! 🫖☕️😊
Proper old school camping
Thanks very much - appreciate you watching and commenting 😊👍
Hi there. Great video, are you in Dorset? I've just subscribe.
@@gilesbinyon You have mail.
Thanks again for another adventure, Giles. 👍🙂🏕️
Thank you very much Brian. Always appreciate your support. Cheers 😊👍
Something odd in the top right of the picture at 1:45mins. Something is moving that wild mallow unnaturally.
Thx again 👍
At about 1:45 something extremely mysterious happens on the upper right side of the screen….
Thank you very much for watching and commenting. Yeah, someone else spotted that too and I just can’t explain what it is ? 😳 It is a little unnerving though !!! 😯Cheers
@@gilesbinyon It was possibly some sort of reflection or double exposure? Or…maybe a wood faery? 😀 i vote weird wood faery….
@@gilesbinyon I AM GOING TO ORDER MY 10-paNEL WINDSCREEN and my collapsible steam basket. Forget about the Dakota fire-hole: a lot of wasted calories and sweat !!
@@jefffriedberg thanks - yeah, it’s quite cheap, effective and lightweight. And reduces any fire scar to a minimum 🔥😊👍
Just curious, but have you ever tried the truckers hitch for tying off your ridge line? Works well for me!
Cheers Doug. Yeah, the truckers hitch is a great knot. But I just use a ‘no knot’ on natural fibre line because (due to water absorption) it does not jam up in the morning. Thx again Buddy 🇺🇸🇬🇧
What canteen do you carry? I would be interested in getting one of them. I live in the States though.
Thanks again Doug. The canteen on the belt is ex-Swedish military. Got it from an eBay shop a good while ago. Cheers 🏕️👍
