America needs another president like Theodore Roosevelt "speak softly but carry a big stick" "death had to take teddy when he was asleep, for he was awake there would have been a fight"
Ummm hello, look at who's in the oval office now. Of course the only philosophical difference between Teddy and Trump is that Trump is more like "Tweet as often as possible about this very big stick that I'm wielding. The biggest stick you ever saw, it's huge" But in today's fast paced world where information moves faster than Teddy could have ever dreamed, so fast that false information can morph into fact if its passed on by the right people, such a philosophical tweek is necessary for self preservation.
Teddy would be the best moderate candidate if he ran today. Conservatives would love him because of his military background, strong military policies, country living background and hobbies such as hunting. While Liberals would love him for his progressive conservationist policies and trust-busting, his artistic talent and city living background. Honestly I feel like he'd win the presidency if he ran today hes basically the everything man.
Teddy was a true progressive in his day. He didn't take shit from anyone, and he fought for the people--not the government. A page could be torn out of his book in regards to both parties of today's politics. He was a true country-first, party-last man. The world is embarrassingly scarce of such men today.
4 Fake And he would also be considered the biggest liberal in history by today’s conservative standards. The man stood for everything both liberals and conservatives (especially conservatives) hate these days. He believe all Americans should work hard for the good of the country, but he also wanted the government to help its people who were in need. He saw the importance of corporations, but also strongly believed they should be kept on a leash when need be. He was against police corruption and believed the police were public servants and should act as such. Of course he was, without a doubt, pretty fucking racist and he absolutely hated Native Americans. The man quite literally saw them as inferior. I think the thing that would make him stand out the most today was how much he cared about the land and wildlife (ironic considering he loved shooting anything with a pulse). Conservatives would try to kill Theodore if he was president today because there’s no way he wouldn’t be putting his foot down and making massive changes to how the government protects the land. He was the ideal centralist (even if it doesn’t look that way). He was a man of his own accord who, despite being a massive asshole (especially towards Natives), genuinely cared about his country and most certainly loved the soil that he stood on. A man who would most likely beat the living shit out of every politician today. A man who could literally get shot and not give a shit. Despite being a massive racist and not afraid to literally go to war with anyone, he was the embodiment of a strong America. It will be a long time before we have another president like that.
Theodore Roosevelt was not only a great president, but he was a heck of a guy. that trip that the narrator talked just a moment about, the one to South America, was astounding. get yourself a copy of the book or the audiobook that is entitled "The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey". the book is just incredible. If he wasn't already one of my very favorite people from history, after this book I would still be a super fan.
+20somthingdrifter11 Thanks! Was going to point out the same. The Badlands are amazing and he is often quoted as saying, "I have always said I would not have been President had it not been for my experience in North Dakota."
Arriving at the top of the hill, Theodore Roosevelt - Medal of Honor of the United States Congress and future North American president - "fired at the retreating Spaniards, seeing one fall and, although he was not sure if he had killed him, He boasted: 'I killed a Spaniard with my own hand like a hare. "The fact remains that 700 Spaniards had withstood the US attack of some 15,000 men on the hill of San Juan (Cuba) for 11 hours and that they lacked of the fearsome Maxim machine guns, Roosevelt arrived, moreover, when the Buffalo Soldiers - African-American military - had won the hill and there were only machine-gunned bodies, however, in Hollywood productions such as Rough Riders (1997) or Night in the Museum (2006). ), Roosevelt is described as a hero who liberates oppressed peoples and deserves a distinction. This and other stories about the black legend are told in The Image of the Presence of Spain in Am rich (1492-1898) in the British and American cinema.
That part about him not getting good grades is inaccurate. He may not have been consistent at Harvard but received 3 academic honors from them in his respective fields. An exceptional accomplishment that shouldn't be ignored.
Excellent tone/pace--you present in an entertaining way that is not silly like some other videos. The entertainment is not an end in itself, but done enough to serve the info. Thanks for doing this.
Whoah. This guy is awesome! That's a whole leap of accomplishments & things to have done in one lifetime. I'm still in shock that his wife & mother died the same day!
Imagine being a police commissioner, secretary of the navy, a war hero, governor of New York, Vice President, and president in just 60 years... that’s a life
actually there probably would have. It wouldn't have made any difference who the US president was. Do you know much about the end of WWI and the start of WWII?
most likely there would have been a ww2, maybe if they weren't so harsh on germany in the treaty of versailles then hitler wouldn't have had such an impact on the german people
what really would've made the difference i think is if the U.S. actually became a part of the League of Nations. The fact that the U.S. didn't join made it easier for Britain and France to further screw over Germany which weakened the country to the point of Facism. I certainly don't know if Theodore being president would have been supportive of joining the League of Nations but if he was he certainly would've had the speaking ability and charisma to convince Congress.
It's so incredible how you excluded the fact that he was at the helm of construction of the Panama Canal, one of the most important builds in engineering and naval history, and still sounds like a legend
Thanks for putting this up, man, but I should say that he actually was an exceptional student. His sophomore year saw him get honors in 6 of his 8 classes in subjects ranging from German to rhetoric to botany and beyond: one of "the best twenty-five in a very brilliant class." His junior year saw him rise to the 13th best in his class of 166, and first and foremost in his philosophy and natural history electives. He was invited to prominent positions in half a dozen of the most influential clubs and editorials at Harvard while finding time to box, skate, dance, hunt, court the woman who became his first wife, start writing a history of the War of 1812 that was so good it was called "the last word on the subject," and still found time to teach Sunday school. See what I mean? For more details like this, you can read "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" by Edmund Morris.
Seriously we need a video of all the TR tales because every time I hear a new one, my respect for this man goes up tenfold! Gets shot-makes a speech immediately after Someone stole his boat-BUILDS a new one and chases them down for 12 hours in the winter only to wrestle them down in the end Is an asthmatic- becomes the single most Badass person to actually exist
PLEASE make more of these!!! They are super helpful for middle schoolers and up, to get a great fast overview of a president or historically important people! PLEASE make one for each president, and inventor... and famous person!!! I would pay to watch the whole series!!
What about appointing gifford pinchot as the first head of forestry? The Forest Service was a pretty huge deal. His huge addition to national park acreage, wildland fire suppression and his support of conservation for the greatest good, of the greatest number of people. Gifford Pinchot needs a movie next!!!
After being shot and doing his speech anyways, X-rays later showed the bullet had lodged in his ample chest muscle. Roosevelt started his speech with "Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.” Badass
As a side note, when he was shot, the bullet hit him in his chest, BUT in such a way that it had to pass through a number of folded pieces of paper as well as his metal eyeglass case. These objects slowed it down. Also - this being Teddy Roosevelt we're talking about - he had powerfully developed chest muscles, which slowed the bullet down even more. Thus, the only parts of his body that were affected by the bullet were bone and muscle tissue!
the medal of was won during his service in the Spanish-American war, while the Nobel peace prize was received for his contributions in ending a war between the Russians and Japanese, if I'm not mistaken.
There is one thing wrong and I don't care if you think it's mundane, but Teddy Roosevelt went to the "North Dakota" badlands, not South Dakota. He bought 2 ranches in North Dakota and there is National Park named after him North Dakota. I'm sure you might find it confusing because South Dakota is where Mt. Rushmore is and where his face is carved.

Didn't he also establish national state parks?
he did and it isn't
It's either a National Park or a State Park. There's no such thing as national state parks.
Lol, didn't catch that! Good eye!
He expanded the national parks by 200,000 Square acres
And also dismantled a couple of monopolies like Rockefeller's oil monopoly

His Ranch was in the Badlands of NORTH dakota, its now a National Park.

Wow. President, Nobel Prize winner, war vet, historian, explorer....this man lived life to the extreme, didn't he?

how was it?
It was North Dakota NOT South that he had his two ranches (within 30 miles of each other), the Maltese Cross Ranch and Elkhorn Ranch.

most likely there would have been a ww2, maybe if they weren't so harsh on germany in the treaty of versailles then hitler wouldn't have had such an impact on the german people
Or if they had executet it properly and seen all the red flags
The treaty of Versailles was harsh because France wanted it harsh. The USA wanted to be lenient anyway, so it wouldn't have made a difference.
