I grew up going to bluegrass festivals and first time I saw Michael was when he played fiddle for Rhonda Vincent. I'm amazed anytime I see him perform...to see someone who was born blind play better than a lot of those who can see.... AMAZING

I stumbled on Michael Cleveland while looking for a tutorial video for my son to work on "Chicken Reel" for his bluegrass fiddle lesson; I was impressed by the live clip I found, so dug deeper on Michael's music and story, and am thoroughly blown away by what he's overcome as an individual. Twenty facial reconstruction surgeries before he was ten years old, or something like that, and blind...What a gift to share with us all, and what a spirit to have pushed through SO much adversity! Thank you for your reaction.

Both of my parents are bluegrass musicians, so I grew up going to bluegrass festivals & have been blessed to have met some of the most famous people of the genre (I have interviewed Bill Monroe, fell asleep on Alison Krause's bus etc.) Mr. Cleveland, I'm happy to say, is as nice as he is talented. He also makes"blind" jokes, which I love that type of humor.

Legend has it that one night, at midnight, Michael Cleveland walked to a crossroads in the middle of nowhere in Indiana. When he arrived, he met the devil himself, and a transaction was made. To this day, nobody knows what Michael got, but the devil got some fiddle lessons!

I consider Michael Cleveland a musical genius. I love how he started with a few bars, watching the other players to check they could keep up with that speed....... without even looking at his own instrument!

I first saw him perform when he was only about 10 o2 12 years old at International Bluegrass Music Association event. He's a phenom for sure, and has the bluegrass awards and followers to prove it. Lee Highway Blues is a tune written by the great Chubby Wise who also made Orange Blossom Special famous. The song is to show off the fiddle player. I've not heard many other instruments play lead on it.

This is Blue Grass music. It has to grow on you but when it does you are hooked! Had my friends 10 yr old in my car and put on some Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder. She is in the back seat yelling. "Turn it off! I can't quit stomping my foot!!" I love it. My Uncle built banjo's and played along with pretty much everyone else in my family. Needless to say the family reninons were a hoot!!

    • @morenteria2988

I was hooked at a young age for sure! And I wouldn't admit it since my brothers would make fun of me!😊 I grew up listening to New Wave since I'm from LA, CA. Now that I'm 50, I have Sirius XM Bluegrass Junction set on my car radio. Still love my New Wave but, Bluegrass has a special place in my heart!

WOW!!! I have never heard of them. Awesome surprise!! Kudos to them.
Tony Black, you immediately sprang to my mind when I saw these guys, I wonder why? I hope that it will make you smile a little, think about that/those grandbaby/ies to come. They need you. Just as much, if not more, than your children needed Mr. June. So keep fighting the good fight. You have a Righteous Father God in you and all around you. You have friends who pray to stand in the gap for you. I'm not a perfect example, but I pray, nonetheless, to stand in the gap for you and Lynne. You've always been a great friend to me and I thank you & Lynne for that friendship.

He's just the best there is the song is Orange blossom special a classic country tune .If you are into bluegrass you know this guy,if not you most likely never heard of him,but all you have to do is get someone to watch him play anything and they will be impressed.

He is in a world of his own. Many obscure references to other songs in this jam. Norwegian Wood at the 5 minute mark. You can see him smile when he done it. When he was young he met Doc Watson and that is the first video I saw of him. At his level of talent, he is not just playing an instrument , thinking about his hands and technique. He's literally just free flowing music. Very rare imho. Notice the rest of the band , they know they are watching something special. Watching him a lot instead of the crowd. :-)

I found Michael Cleveland when I was searching for fiddle music on YT. What makes a fiddle, or violin so difficult is that it has no frets. Getting the finger placements in the right place for perfect pitch is pure muscle memory.

    • @amandajanemumof3boys
      @amandajanemumof3boys ปีที่แล้ว

Lol when I first started I sounded screechy a lot of it is the pressure you use with the bow and using straight bows but they now make a sticker and they make your frets when your first starting.. I no longer sound screechy but boy how my family did suffer through that

Your review said it - extra-ordinary. The lovely thing is, that his style is sill based on the old American fiddling, drawing on all the strands that make American music of all kinds so special. Though I belive he started with the Suzuki method when he was very young, he's just absorbed the songs and tunes that were around him as he grew up, and has turned it all into - as you say - 'extra-ordinary music that we can all appreciate and enjoy, and makes life better.

Charie Daniels will be the first to admit he is NOT a great fiddle player - Devil Went Down to Georgia is a song filled with doing Fiddle playing wrong -like playing on the wrong side of the bridge. Just sayin..
Now, MIchael Cleveland, I was out of the loop for a long time on him too. I am a casual Bluegrass listener and I don't live in the East / midwest / south where there a a lot of bluegrass festivals. People in the bluegrass scene have known him for years. He is an 11 time Bluegrass Fiddler of the Year and he just won a grammy now.
I found Michael myself through TH-cam because my daughter got into fiddling. I've always like Country music and Fiddling but never really known much in particular. My daugher's violin teacher also plays and teaches Texas Style Fiddle. I started looking for REALLY GOOD fiddling on TH-cam. A lot of fiddlking is not so good. In the traditional music scene some people are attatched to sounding a certain way... God Love them. Then there are Texas Fiddlers... then there is Michael Cleveland. One listen and I was into this!!
Lee Highway Blues is a Bluegrass Standard that goes back to the 1920s. The Lee Highway is a coast to coast Federal highway route that goes from New York to San Fancisco via the South and the Southwest. So its on of the original open road American country songs. It's been a standard fiddle tune and recorded 100s of times. No words, It's a fiddle tune.
So some suggestions - Michael Cleveland and Billy Strings taking it up a few notches pushing each other:
This one is LONG - Not traditional - Billy Wrote this song - Meet Me at the Creek - about his childhood family tradition of camping at the river and fishing and hanging out playing music. th-cam.com/video/M9jcokuDg_M/w-d-xo.html
This tune is from the same set but it's more traditional - Footprints in the Snow is a Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass boys tune and mostly they play this one straight with some spice. and it's only 3:23 long th-cam.com/video/wu_YMMrj3C0/w-d-xo.html
From an earlier set they played the first country / roots music/ folk song ever recorded and released by a record company - Eck Robertson in 1922 recorded "Sallie Gooden'" Here is Micahel and Billy taking tradition into the 21st century - it really lets loose just past 4:45 into a 10 minute cut. th-cam.com/video/uC0TPnStIfc/w-d-xo.html
Now That I dumped all that on you Do me a Big Favor - Do a reaction to this: NO Prep - just watch and react. The Quebe Sisters th-cam.com/video/2dQEd4Mg0S4/w-d-xo.html
