      It is just amazing to see soo many people and their children enjoying the outdoors and all its wonder. This is why I want to move to Pennsylvania. Alot of outdoor things to do, see and explore. 25 years living in the largest city of New Hampshire I need to move to places like this!

    The mystery concrete rectangle at 38:25 is, at my guess, what appears to be a cable drum/winch setup, perhaps for canal boats. The angled slot in the concrete base would have been a cable sleeve. Makes sense as it appears the R & N route follows an old canal.

That little picnic spot would be a great place to stop and enjoy a bite to eat and enjoy the sound of the rushing water from the little waterfall....a peaceful and enjoyable trip to be sure 😊😊

    I did that trip something like 15 years ago--it's one of the best around. Awesome train ride up, and spectacular bike ride down the river. Your video let me revisit the memories. As for the "cheater" accusations from riders on analog bikes, I regard them [usually] as tongue-in-cheek acknowledgement that I've got an ebike--and they don't. I joke back that hikers could accuse us both of "cheating."

    I loved the scenery and waterfalls in this video. Seems like it would be a great place for a picnic. I did the rafting trip years ago. Probably the late 90's. It was a lot of fun even though I got run over by the raft. We tried to bounce off the rocks like we were told and I got impatient. I jumped out and tried to push the raft off with no success. I was successful with pulling the raft off and immediately realized my mistake. Thankfully when I resurfaced, I was able to grab the back of the raft and hang on until I could get back in.

    The next time you're at Rockport, check out the old cement structures that are there, best seen from the bridge next to parking lot, and let us know what you think they were used for, they have me puzzled. Also, a little up the steep car road, there is a small cave to explore.

    If you read Rail and Trail magazine, there is a controversy about e-bikes brewing. The real gist of the article is about speeding on trails and I saw a lot of inconsiderate riders on that trail and they weren't on e-bikes.

    • @JPVideos81
      @JPVideos81  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, some ride very irresponsibly. I kept it around 13mph 99% of the time. The limit on this trail is 15mph, but I've seen people doing twice that on all kinds of bikes.

    I used to do a 3 day camping trip for the "Mountain Bike Weekend" event from 1987 to 1999, no E bikes back then, had to be in top shape to ride with that group. In the times I was there we ran into a black bear, 3 rattlesnakes, one mygalomorphae and the 17 year cicada episode. At my age now, the E bike would be a great idea on those switchbacks.

    That area with the kids (you called excavation/rock fall), was an area where people frequently were excavating crystals. However, today there are signs posted and you are no longer allowed to do that. Looks like you past it before the signs (relatively new) were up.
    You zipped by a cool lock that is in spectacular condition at @18:53 in your video, that was also the location of a horrific train crash - where cars telescoped into each other. That's an area well worth a stop to explore.
    Interesting side note, one day I've had a ghost siting in the area between Rockport and Buttermilk falls *roughly @21:14 in your video, of two railroad workers walking south that vanished when I got close to them. That was weird and totally unexpected...
    Luke's Falls has the best breeze coming off of it. Best place to stop on a hot day.
    In around the area of maybe @26:28 of your video (Hickory Run area), I had what I believe was a Bigfoot/Sasquatch encounter. I came across a tree laying across the trail, large enough to have to carry my bike over. Its a common occurrence after a storm, so I wasn't thinking anything about it other than I didn't recall any bad storms coming by recently, so thought it was a bit odd. And shortly after doing so, I heard a low grunt, and then a tree getting ripped out of the ground. That tree then came hurling down the slope right by me, landing relatively close to where I was standing. I did NOT stick around to find out what had done that. It scared the crap out of me and I was not hanging around the area. I just knew that it was not something a normal person would have been capable to do.... (Don't let me scare anyone, this was a once in 20+ years occurrence...)
    I'd recommend river rafting...
    That natural rock bench is one of my favorite places too! I have many pictures there. You missed capturing an area of ruins right by that area, of an old mill I believe. Surprised it did not catch your eye.
    I have a picture of the same type of snake on that very same train bridge in New Penn Haven. Funny that you also caught one there. There is a lot of stuff in area to explore. You have an old turn table (have to go looking for it), and there was multiple incline railways there at one time as well. Do a search and find the culturedcarboncounty site to learn more about its history.
    I have no idea what that thing is you found near Jim Thorpe. It's pretty interesting to me as well...
    Good advice at the end! BTW - there is a bathroom at Glen Onoko too.
    BTW, I no longer do the bike train, because I typically bike up to White Have (have ice cream at Wood's), then turn around an come back (@50 miles or so). But I bike for fitness and a competitive cyclist. (The D+L is a frequent training ground for me, and have been riding it many years.) So, I think eBikes are sort of cheating too, but only when combining with the ultra fitness side of things. However, I do truly feel as you do, that if it is enabler to allow someone to get out and explore, and assist with your fitness; all the better. So, no I am not putting you down for it. All bikes have their purpose and are a good thing. There's a good chance I will get one so I can continue doing the things I love when my body is wearing out and I can no longer do it myself.
    Loved the video of the area I call my "home trail".

    • @JPVideos81
      @JPVideos81  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's funny you mentioned all of that because I did see most of it. I did the June bike train with my friend Jamie (didnt film this time) and seen much of what you mentioned. I'll be returning in the future to document some of those areas including the train wreck site, ruins near penn haven bridge, etc. I was told there's nothing left of the turntable that was there, but maybe I was told wrong? That's kinda freaky about that tree situation, but glad it was only a one off occurrence. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video on a place you're so familiar with.
      P.S., i didn't mention the bathrooms at Glen Onoko because they always stink really bad any time I've used them.

      @@JPVideos81 Yeah barely enough to keep the rust off the rails. And now to top it off, development ran the big NS customer off in Hazelton. Thankfully RBMN found them a spot where Sky Top Coal was along I-81, but that means the NS local is now only half as long. I fully expect NS to sell RBMN whats left north of Lehighton at some point.

    Wow a great video! You got me thinking about the ebike. I mainly hike, but looks like fun! I got on the trail at Rockport last Memorial Day weekend, remember seeing Luke's Falls. I don't know how, as pretty much stayed on trail, but got a bad case of poison ivy. Otherwise, was very enjoyable. Thanks for taking us along!

    Hi Jay ! It was a really fun time. Thanks for taking us along
    Could that 'platform' that you asked if anyone knew what it was -- might there have been a building there at one time maybe used to house paperwork up stairs, downstairs may have been some small stores & in the back might have been a deck with tables & chairs maybe they sold soup & sandwiches & drinks?
    Maybe the trees were cut down abit to view the water, maybe folks had steps to go down to the water & sight see & fish. Just a thought.
    Well I'm still waiting for my E-bike...Why it needs to be a month long wait for shipping -- who knows - but it's free shipping so I guess I shouldn't complain.
    I can complain the fact that they were soposed to have sent me an email but I never got one. I did write ALL the company's info down.👍 so I have to wait till the middle of next month or so. Monday I will try to contact the bike company.
    The bathroom bit, I'll just bring along some TP😊 after being in the Army for years it's not my 1st rodeo 'going' in the 'woods'. (Hee-hee)

    The bridge that used to cross overhead at 15:30 was the Lehigh Valley's Hays Creek Branch, it tied into the mainline to Hazleton (current NS track) near Weatherly and was primarily built as a shortcut for coal trains leaving the Hazleton area heading north and was abandoned in the mid 60's after the drop in coal traffic. It tied into the current R&N mainline at Tannery, the siding where the tinker toys were tied up. If you look in the trees at 6:54 right before you pass the tinker toys there is a signal mast hiding to the right, that was part of the interlocking where the Hays Creek Branch tied in.

    Should come back in mid July for when the Rhododendrons are in bloom. Have always wondered what those supports were for? My thinking was someone put them in the wrong place for I 80 (joking). Rockport 'bathrooms' are pit toilets inside a building. There are multiple places to stop to refresh yourself. Did you check out the turnstile before going over to Glen Onoko from Jim Thorpe parking area?

    What a wonderful trip you had, the scenery and landscape and all the waterfalls and nature's carpet are so beautiful and lots of cool finds along the way and I have many favorites. At first, from a distance, I thought the overhang you found was a bear cave or den. lol Gorgeous view when you were sitting on the rock ledge and that has to be a favorite for sure! I have no idea what that structure with the shoots is, it would be interesting to find out what it actually was. That snake was huge, wonder what kind it was? I would do exactly what you said, bring a picnic lunch with and enjoy the peaceful and relaxing surroundings. Love that they give you a souvenir ticket too! Awesome photos! Excellent video!! I enjoyed this very much, especially after we had such a nice ride together on it this month. IMO, the Bike Train is THE coolest adventure you can have in this area. Gotta love an hour train ride followed by a 26 mile bike ride! Even though I had hoped to be working the Bike Train instead of the LGSR that day, I'm glad I at least got to see you in the station that morning and then on the trail on the way back in Glen Onoko. I'm surprised how many more little waterfalls there were along the way in May than in June. We've had abnormally dry conditions in June, but it's cool to know that under more normal circumstances there will be more to see. I also had no idea about that odd foundation in the woods near Nesquehoning Junction. Beyond guessing that it's railroad related, I have absolutely no idea what that was for. That's funny about the couple claiming it was cheating. I seriously feel like I get MORE exercise on my eBike because I tend to stay out on it longer and make a day of it. My regular bike I'm pretty much exhausted and done after an hour. Not to say one is better than the other, but they offer different experiences. I'm happy to see more eBikes out these days as it enables more and more people to enjoy the trails, even us folks who are less than athletic. Thanks for sharing your May adventure via video and for riding with me in June. I absolutely totally can't wait to do this ride again!

      I agree, hands down this is one of the best experiences around and it couldn't happen in a more beautiful area. Between this ride and ours, I'm already planning my return to document more areas. Hope you get out on your ebike lots more this summer and enjoy the trails.
