    Without this, in a hot day, the rail will zig zag in a particular spot and you wouldn't be able to ride through it as it is more curved than the train is capable of.

    How about a little more info on the subject? For instance: How much of a gap in inches is used for standard rail lengths in the U.S.? What is the maximum temperature range that these gaps cover, and are they set to within that range by the ambient temperature on the day the rails are laid?

    • @eanayayo
      @eanayayo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Usually 20 mm gap is max

    • @welshpete12
      @welshpete12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@eanayayo Here in Britain , the ideal temperature that the rail is laid down is 63 F, ( I don't know that that is in centigrade) . This gives the correct gap . Gages are used if outside this temperature . But as far as I remember, it was about 18 mm . Rail was laid in 60 meter lengths if my memory serves me aright , but it may have been more . When laying , believe it or not rail is like rubber. And can be stretched by the use of hydraulic jacks on one end . While the other end is held in place with chains to the existing track . The longer the length of rail or track is that is laid down the greater will be the gap at the ends . Greater expansion will be at the ends of the rail and not in the middle . The rail will move with heat . So if incorrectly laid or not properly ballasted . It may well buckle in high temperatures .
